Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

This fight is for everything.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The willow is too close to the house.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Accountability, motherfuckers.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Gonna be hard to top last night’s horrorshow, but these RNC guys are dedicated professionals…

I feel well prepared for this Republican National Convention, having covered personality cults in China and North Korea.

As an aside, one of the reasons why this whole night is falling so short is because it’s basically just any night on Fox News.

The DNC was programming people never see.

The RNC is programming people see daily. Grievance politics served up by Trump sycophants.

BORING.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) August 25, 2020

THIS WAS THE MOST UNKINDEST CUT OF ALL!

Fox not airing the Republican convention. MSNBC is.

This suggests the TV programmers know the appeal of these people.

— Helen Kennedy (@HelenKennedy) August 25, 2020

Fox has cut away from most of the speeches and cut or talked over all of the gauzy videos. Meanwhile, MSNBC and CNN carrying it live.
Meanwhile, Tucker just said Fox is the only one that will be carrying the convention and not to trust MSNBC and CNN. https://t.co/eimGmsGne1

I thought we could make an advance list of awkward moments.  For example, Governor  Kim Reynolds is speaking tonight, and had to announce today that the federal government will not be providing disaster aid to many Iowans affected by the derecho. Any other nominees?

Every picture I see of Trump Junior, he looks like he’s trying desperately to puff out his chest. But he does it by leaning his neck backwards and he looks like a drunk at a bar about to fall over backwards.

Then I remember all the pictures of Trump Senior with his bizzare forward lean, like he’s about to fall on his face. Do these two suffer from some weird genetic mutation, or is someone actually teaching them to pose like this?

So, Jerry Falwell Jr. has decided to stay resigned.

WaPost: Jerry Falwell Jr. confirms he has resigned as head of Liberty University

Jerry Falwell, Jr. confirmed Tuesday that he has resigned as president of Liberty University, after agreeing to step down Monday in the wake of scandals involving personal conduct.
Falwell, 58, had led the university since 2007, taking over the school from his father …  He said he sent a letter of resignation around 11 p.m. after conversations with a board member.

“I’ve accomplished all I can accomplish and I want to move on,” Falwell said. “I was starting to get bored.”

I like his style with the “bored” comment.

[Falwell] said a board member was pressuring him to resign earlier Monday, but he wanted more time to decide — and to avoid giving credibility to a report by Reuters that day that described him watching his wife have sex with another. He called that story “90 percent false.”

His wife, Becki Falwell, said in an interview that she did have an affair, describing it as embarrassing and humbling.

“I wish Christians and people would be as forgiving as Christ was,” she said. [Don’t we all?]

She also denied that her husband watched her have sex with another man.

…. “The quote that keeps running through my mind is Martin Luther King Jr., ‘Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty, I’m free at last,’” Falwell said. “There’s something big in the future but I don’t know what it is yet.”

Bored. And “free at last.” LOL.

I feel for the Falwells; they should have privacy in their marriage BUT they are foisting the Christianist lifestyle and hypocrisy on others. Anyway, let’s wait for the financial audit.

And a comment from a writer who graduated from Liberty:

Evangelicals tend to have an individualistic view of sin, so when one famous leader falls from grace, they tend to see it as “one bad apple,” Merritt said.

Again, no understanding of that proverb. It’s the barrel, people.  And unrealistic expectations, too.

Is he speaking tonight?  There was a schedule earlier today and he wasn’t listed.

Tuesday’s lineup: First Lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Sen. Rand Paul (KY), Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, former Attorney General Pam Bondi, Abby Johnson, Jason Joyce, Myron Lizer, Mary Ann Mendoza, Megan Pauley, Cris Peterson, John Peterson, Nicholas Sandmann, Eric Trump, Tiffany Trump.

Kimberly Guilfoyle just said she was a first generation American and then said her mother was from Puerto Rico.

How funny. Checking Wikipedia, I discover that she does have an arguable claim to being a first-generation American—her father was born in Ireland. That seems not to be part of the narrative, however.

Burgess Owens (R), who is running for Congress in Utah’s 4th congressional district, reportedly plagiarized numerous passages in one of his books, Why I Stand: From Freedom to the Killing Fields of Socialism, Utah Policy reports.

Owens devotes an entire chapter of his book to smearing civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), who passed away earlier this month.

He is scheduled to speak at the Republican convention on Wednesday night.

That photo of open-armed Guilfoyle shouting reminds me of a scene in the Eva Perón miniseries that starred Faye Dunaway. Eva is receiving coaching on her speechmaking from an acting teacher, and one of the lines she practices is “My life…for Perón.”  So dramatic.

They’ll try to sell it as ordinary missionary humping and a short and temporary failure to honour her vows (his won’t be mentioned), as plain and vanilla as possible, in the darkest dark and no one watching.

btw,  looks like Laura is heading more West than expected, so now full impact is expected in Houston and parts of Southwest Louisiana particularly Lake Charles.  I believe there is a mandatory evacuation for Lake Charles, but not sure.  NOLA will be on the “wet” side though, so we can still expect higher tides and rain, depending on the well the pumps work, flooding is still a possibility.

    https://twitter.com/Laurie_Garrett/status/1298381722275524608?s=20

As an essential worker, unless they activate the hurricane team, I will still be expected to report to work.  Landfall is expected Wednesday but moving away from NOLA, so I don’t expect the hurricane teams to be activated.  As long as there is no flooding I should be good.  With the right amount of rain, a few of the streets round my apartment does flood

Hmmm.  Vox story.  They very delicately outline the possibility of blackmail or coercion by Trump.  In the event Michael Cohen discussed the Falwells much with Trump.

Vox.  Story has a lot of good links to previous articles from various sources.

The details of the sex scandal are getting a great deal of attention. But more broadly, this is a tale of financial, institutional, and political corruption involving one of the most prominent evangelical organizations in the country — and the saga may even have helped make Donald Trump president.
Gaps in the story remain, but what we know is that in 2015, Michael Cohen — whom Falwell had met a few years earlier when Trump came to speak at Liberty — tried to help the Falwells deal with a problem stemming from this situation. (Cohen later said that the problem involved someone obtaining compromising photos of Becki Falwell.)
A few months later — and a few days before the 2016 Iowa caucuses — Falwell Jr. announced that he was endorsing Donald Trump for president. This was one of Trump’s first prominent endorsements, and it was surprising and controversial among evangelicals, considering Trump’s weak ties to organized religion and his messy personal life.
There’s no hard evidence that Falwell’s endorsement of Trump was tied in any way to Cohen’s assistance to the Falwells (whether as a favor, quid pro quo, or blackmail). But it doesn’t really need to be. What is clear is that Cohen knew at least part of the story of this highly personal and private situation — a story that would be extremely damaging to Falwell’s career if it got out. And as Falwell was deciding whom to endorse in 2016, he knew what Cohen knew.

If I lived to be 100, I’d never understand the thinking of stone cold stupid Trump voters like this moron in Iowa:

When Aaron Schatz surveys the wreckage of 2020, he finds himself doing surprisingly well.

Profits on his Iowa dairy farm are up thanks to coronavirus. The pandemic feels a distant threat, and Schatz has yet to wear a mask. Black Lives Matter protests are an annoyance but really someone else’s problem.

But Schatz is worried that Donald Trump, the man he hesitantly backed four years ago after twice voting for Barack Obama, may be in trouble.

“I’m more for Trump than I was before. As a dairy farmer, I feel like I’m sitting better than I have in 10 years,” said the fifth-generation farmer in Howard county, north-eastern Iowa.

“But I’m a little scared for Trump. It’s gonna be a tough battle. A year ago I wasn’t worried. I thought he’d have it.”

“I’m upset with our media. I think all they do is portray him as being such an evil man. There’s still things about Trump that bug you and stuff but I hate seeing some of these news stations. They don’t cover anything decent that he does. It’s just everything they can to put him down,” he said.

“Take coronavirus, which is not in his control. I feel like he’s doing all right. I guess it’s a lot of unknowns that nobody really knew about. He had how many people giving all their different opinions? Which one is the right one?”

Schatz is not bothered by Trump’s questioning of his experts on the necessity of masks to limit the spread of Covid-19, or the rush to reopen businesses before the virus was contained.

“I never have wore a mask yet. I guess I don’t feel a threat out here on the farm away from people. I know we’ve been getting more cases in our county here, but I feel if I’m gonna get it, I’m gonna get it,” he said.

Per WIkipedia, “first generation” is defined in more than one way. (This was news to me!)

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary “first-generation” means

    1. “born in the U.S. -used of an American of immigrant parentage”
    2. “foreign-born -used of a naturalized citizen

According to the U.S Census Bureau, first generation refers to those who are foreign born, second generation refers to those with at least one foreign-born parent,

    We’re Merriam-Websterites in our family. :-)

[ETA: My father, who was born in a country other than the USA, used “first generation” to refer to us, his offspring. So that makes us of the Merriam-Webster persuasion… and in any case, at the moment, I don’t trust the Census Bureau farther than I can throw it.]

    What happened to Booman?

Why the GOP Convention’s First Night Was (Kind of) a Success

Under the circumstances, the first night of the “convention” went off fairly well and was probably more effectivethan most liberals recognize or want to admit. If nothing else, it took attention away from all the negative stories that were swirling around. The theory behind the first night’s programming wasn’t difficult to discern. Black voices attested to Trump’s lack of racism, while white voices spoke to suburban fears of Black crime. Trump is trying to cut into Biden’s margins in his areas of strength, and he’ll hope to do it without hurting the enthusiasm of his more rural base. Trump also used his primetime slot to rewrite the history of the COVID-19 outbreak, hoping to make his failures less of a liability for him at the polls.

Based on the goals for the night, it seemed like the Trump campaign achieved its goals. The message was necessarily mixed and contradictory, so the programming was anything but consistent or truly coherent, but the Republican National Committee made the arguments it wanted to make—and it made strategic sense. The confab’s organizers were probably pretty pleased with how it went, but it won’t do much to fix the legal and political problems that keep mounting around the president, his family, and his allies.

Not linking to the Washington Monthly because I’m pissed.

I don’t think people hear “aristocrat” and have the image people would have had when the joke was invented.

    @Calouste:

Guilfoyle’s mother is Puerto Rican; in other words, an American citizen, not an “immigrant” whatsoever. So it’s pretty shitty of her to use her own damn mother to force Puerto Ricans — fellow American citizens — into the Trumpists’ racist conception of scary border hordes (gaslightingly gussied up in a supposedly heartwarming immigrant’s tale, of course).

In Canada, a First Generation Immigrant refers to a person who has Immigrated here, and become naturalized.

Second and Third Generation only apply to children of, and grandchildren of, parents/grandparents who were both Immigrants.

I’m not considered any common “generation” of Immigrant, because both my Grandmothers were born in Canada, even though both my Grandfathers were immigrants.

My ex however, is considered 2nd Generation because both her parents immigrated from Italy.

Guilfoyle is just faking it, lying and pretending.

@Barbara: I think the single most contemptible thing about Republicans (out of a loooong list) is the way the literally only care about the deaths of other human beings when they can use those deaths to slander Democrats. As if the life of a child who died at the hands of an illegal immigrant is intrinsically more worthy of consideration than, say, the life of a child who died as a result of drinking tap water in Flint, Michigan.

EDIT: And in this case, it’s not even a child! It was a grown man, apparently, a cop who was killed on duty. But yeah, let’s call them Angel Mothers.

Trump is a grandson of a German immigrant, Friedrich Trump. I thought that made him third-generation American.

Actually, he\s an “anchor baby,” since — as others have already pointed out — his mother was an immigrant when he was born. [Note: to be honest, she may have already been a citizen when the Murderer-in-Chief was born, but until shown otherwise, I’ll go with her NOT being a citizen.]

So whatever happened with Rudy Giuliani’s big Joe Biden “expose” that was supposed to happen on Biden’s speech night?

On his show, as he describes it (didn’t watch) he had some doctors on saying that Biden was senile. It was proven to be bullshit by Biden’s speech. So much so that there were immediate counterfactual accusations that Biden’s speech was pre-recorded.

In the latest episode of “Common Sense,” Joe Biden’s cognitive state is assessed by independent doctors. Their conclusion is that Biden’s rapidly deteriorating mental condition has made him unfit to serve as president.WATCH:https://t.co/eCD8j7sTvw— Rudy W. Giuliani (@RudyGiuliani) August 20, 2020
