I swear, he calms me every afternoon with these. It’s like having an older, experienced friend sit down and reassure you that everything will be okay. As long as you vote.

@TaMara (HFG): It’s that decency. It’s so reassuring.
Elizabelle
This is balm for the soul. Thanks, TaMara.
Is MSNBC covering, or are they still all Nancy Pelosi’s shampoo? (Missed all that today, but I heard you.)

I swear Black people keep having to save this damn country.

I didn’t get a chance to watch it much, but I did watch the facebook comments thread for a good 10 minutes just for ‘fun’.
Comments were running 90+% in favor of Biden. It was good to hear.
WaterGirl
@Elizabelle: is there a quick summary of the shampoo situation? My laptop has been in the shop and it’s kind of murky when you come in late. I missed the whole thing.

@WaterGirl: Happily, no clue. I just hear that it is. A. Thing.

@WaterGirl: Nancy went and got her hair done and did not wear a facemask during part of it.
Ken
@WaterGirl: I’m not sure what really happened, but from what I’ve heard the Republican/Fox/QAnon take is that Pelosi was bathing in the blood of slaughtered virgins while spraying covid virus into the air-conditioning system of a nursing home.
EDIT: Thanks to kindness for explaining what really happened.

@WaterGirl: From what I understand, Pelosi made an appointment with her hair dresser. Hair dresser was like, better make sure with my boss — called her and she said yes. Boss, apparently a wingnut, filmed the appointment then screamed NANCY PELOSI IS BREAKING THE DISTANCING RULES FOR A HAIRCUT. Fox News picks it up, so now it’s A Thing.
BUT! Hair dresser has receipts, and can show that the boss okayed the appointment, and that the whole thing was a set up. So here we are.
MisterForkbeard
@WaterGirl: Shampoo situation, so far as I’m aware:
1) Salon owner goes on Fox News with a video of Pelosi getting her hair done inside without a facemask in her salon. Frames this as a “I’m just a normal shopowner, but Nancy Pelosi is keeping us closed and she took advantage of her power to hypocritically get her own hair done.” It goes nuts.
2) Nancy Pelosi says basically the whole thing is a setup and she followed all laws.
3) NP gets lambasted by the press for calling it a setup when she should just have copped to it.
4) The stylist who actually did the work confirms that it was a setup: He followed all rules, called Nancy for the checkup, confirmed with the shop owner that it wouldn’t be a problem, etc. He also notes that the shop owner is a rabid anti-democrat and hates Pelosi but did give her full permissions for it provided they followed the rules (which they did). The shop owner approved everything and all rules were followed, and she’s doing this in order to attack Pelosi.
5) He also has taped evidence of the Salon Owner being open when they’re not supposed to be, personally violating the rules regarding opening and sanitation, as well as coercing her salon stylists into continue working there illegally during the shutdown
6) The Salon Owner is now fund-raising off of the whole thing, but for what I can’t actually tell. She’s just grifting.
7) The media and especially republicans have ignored everything after #2.
It’s a giant nothingburger. Hopefully it goes away soon, but Republicans are flogging it because they can and the media hasn’t engaged in more than a superficial “Pelosi’s a hypocrite” message.
Mary G
Salons in California aren’t allowed to do business indoors, but Nancy SMASH went and had her cut and color done in her hairdresser’s closed building, alone, in defiance of the Covid restrictions. It was a stupid move. Rich people are having their grooming people come to their house, and she has enough money to do that and should have. Unforced errors are not useful.
ETA: The fact that is was a setup doesn’t change the optics. She fell for it. YMMV.
mvr
The woman with the orange hair wrap was eloquent.
Mallard Filmore
@WaterGirl:
Nancy called her stylist to see if the shop was open.
The stylist called the shop owner to see if opening was allowed.
The shop owner, who hates Nancy, said its ok to open the shop. The motive of the shop owner, and what she knew about the legalities of opening the shop, are fuzzy to me.
So Nancy went to get her hair done

@MisterForkbeard:
BUT HER HIGHLIGHTS!!!
MisterForkbeard
@Mary G: Actually, Hair Salons could operate indoors as of August 31st with some exceptions. Since NP literally called the salon to ask if they were open, it sounds like she thought they’d be open and wasn’t doing anything in defiance of law.
ETA: Here, proof – at a state level, indoor salons were allowed to be open as of August 31st: https://abc7.com/california-purple-tier-counties-businesses-reopening-what-does-mean/6393859/
SF may have a different policy. The salon is actually the enforcing agency here – if they weren’t supposed to be open, they should TELL HER that they’re not open. They didn’t. That’s it.
Elizabelle
@Mallard Filmore: I think the shopowner is forgoing a LOT of business.
I sure would not give her any further business, for trying to shiv Nancy Smash. I look forward to the eventual yelp reviews.
Of course, it is way hard to find an excellent colorist (no idea what services NP had). But … sacrifice.

@Elizabelle: Plus, who’s going to go to a salon knowing they secretly video their customers?
That’s prompting memories – wasn’t there a prominent businessman-turned-politician busted for secretly videoing people? I’m wanting to say, in his company’s bathrooms?
VOR
@MisterForkbeard: Just the other day Trump literally told everyone in an indoors meeting to take off their masks. NP was near, what, one other person? Heck, the WH press secretary is showing NP on a loop while speaking at the podium without wearing a mask.
Baud
@Elizabelle:
Yep. She should pack up and move to Texas.
Kay
@Baud:
I think Biden could actually pull that off. “Come on, man…”
Elizabelle
From the LA Times. I think the deplorable Erica Kious just shot herself in the foot. And will have a harder time retaining talented stylists. You could not pay me to go this creepy a-hole’s salon.
opiejeanne
@WaterGirl: Nancy Pelosi had her hair washed and blown out inside a salon she has used for years. She was told by the owner that they could do it indoors, which is against the rules. The owner is a Republican donor and it was a set-up; later the same day she went on Fox News with the security footage of Nancy walking from the sink area to the chair, with her mask down.
The rule is that hair can be dealt with in a patio area outdoors, but the owner told her they could do it indoors if it is one person at a time.
The stylists backed up Nancy Pelosi’s version of the event and told on the owner. The owner now has a GoFundMe page, asking for $300,000 and has been on Fox at least one more time so the hosts can call Nancy a hypocrite for not wearing a mask.
Meanwhile, Pelosi has apologized for allowing herself to be set up like this, said she doesn’t wear a mask when she washes her hair but that she should have seen that it was a trap. She says the salon owes her an apology.
Immanentize
@Kay: What else do they have to complain about from now until November 3?
Baud
@Kay:
Yes! I dare some reporter to waste his time.

@MisterForkbeard: Also, the salon owner has been without an operating license for at least three months.

It’s not that hard to wear a mask during a shampoo. Have had one — one — hair appointment since the COVID shutdowns, and would not have dreamed of not wearing the mask. They don’t melt!

@MisterForkbeard:
Mary G’s point (bad optics) still stands. To the average person, it still sounds like she was doing something she shouldn’t have. She just should’ve gotten somebody to come to her private residence and not risked it. It’s definitely an unforced error
WaterGirl
@MisterForkbeard: @Mary G:
thank you, all the detail helps me make sense of the snippets I had heard.
unless they called nancy and suggested the plan, how is this a setup?
if you’re explaining, you’re losing. Unforced error.

I just KNEW it!
We are going to really have to have this “double standards” conversation with our national snooze media every damn day, aren’t we?
Baud
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Stop it. If a liberal deceived a Republican that way, the right wing would be screaming bloody murder about the left’s immorality, not telling their guy to dress less provocatively.
WaterGirl
@Mallard Filmore: actually, you supplied some more missing pieces. Thank you.
Elizabelle
@Kay: I wonder if deplorable Kious is already in financial trouble, due to COVID — or for other reasons, and wants to blame her salon’s eventual (or imminent!) demise on Nancy Pelosi.
Sounds like the hair stylist is ready to leg it out of there.

The right wing is a cult, what’s your point? They only criticize their own when they’re not far-right enough.
I personally think this is a nothingburger that will go away in a day or so. I’m certainly not going to rake Pelosi over the coals for it. I’m just remarking that it was an unforced error. Pelosi is not above criticism. She even admits she should’ve seen it was a trap. And really, if you’re explaining you’re losing
Baud
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
So stop explaining are start attacking. The salon owner engaged in deliberate deception for political purposes. Pelosi is the victim of a fraud.

What’s telling is the all out balls to the walls Republican effort to make Nancy Pelosi important, in the context of hey have you noticed that our kids are still at home and nobody knows when school will start again and nobody’s doing anything about it?
Seriously, the disruption to our lives last spring was supposed to be over, and would have been far, far more manageable by now if we had a competent federal government. It’s sinking in right now that nobody who’s supposed to be in charge knows what to do, and every day that passes is another day that trump is failing.
Pelosi got a haircut? Pfffffttttttttt.

I tried the NotMax rye corn bread recipe this afternoon. Just came out of the oven. I cheated and used 2 T of honey instead of 3, and used half the salt.

@Patricia Kayden: Damn, it’s that Sebastian Bach. Former vocalist for Skid Row back when hair metal was a thing. Always figured him for the wingnut side of the street, given some of his past behavior.
Dorothy A. Winsor
I just listened to most of that and I think the reason I find it reassuring is that he’s so clearly able to talk about a wide variety of different things. He’s knowledgeable and has thought about all this. The contrast to Trump is almost shocking. Trump doesn’t know how anything works. He lives in his own little world.

@WaterGirl: This. The shop owner has destroyed her business, but it’s an emotional issue. Going to the salon is comforting and soothing, and the fact that she went when so many people have been deprived of it so long is going to leave a mark. I was pissed myself. I would love to have my hair and nails done and am looking forward to when we hit tier 2 as it’s understood here in the OC in five days or so. I’ll have been in my house for six months straight by then, except for taking the cat to the vet one time. Cabin fever and resentment of Twitler could not be higher.

This seems like an unforced error on the part of the salon owner and the Trump admin. (KM played the clip at today’s press conference). No non-wingnuts care or will remember this a week from now (remember her fridge full of ice cream?), and it makes them look like the petty, out of touch aholes they are.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Elizabelle:
Wow. Fuck that owner. What an idiotic hypocrite
Mary G
One more thing, then I’ll shut up about haircutgate. McNinny is showing the footage on a loop at the WH press conference, so I think Nancy’s robust defense and the fact that the Fox News universe will talk about it nonstop is going to help NP. People want a calm serious politician who will work on real problems and Joe is doing a great job of showing that, and this overreaction will have a backlash.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@LuciaMia:
I guess I missed that part of the story…
I guess the owner didn’t give a shit about Pelosi’s business until now
Elizabelle
@debbie: Sad trombone.
If I were a grifter, I would be collecting the names of the donors. Dimwits with money. Heaven!
Baud
If a salon owner duped regular customers into believing that it was safe and legal to get their hair done, no one would have any problem identifying who the bad guy was. It’s only because our society has internalized the idea that it has the privilege to treat Democrats differently than other people that Pelosi is under the gun. It’s a double standard through and through.

WRT Biden’s remarks: he was very restrained in manner, and his affect was almost funereal. Alas. Though it wasn’t a rousing success while it was up. I think it was at $2,115 when I last looked.

@WaterGirl: how is it a setup? Duh! The wingnut salon owner knew NP was coming- cuz she gave Pelosi permission- and secretly videoed the event. Fox had that video w/in hours of Pelosi’s appointment. Tempest in a teapot.

Actually, version I read was that she could not get her regular person to come to her home, though she has frequented this place in her neighborhood at times over the years so called for an appt. . . . I should probably get a source for this but I think it was part of her own narrative in one of the news bits I read.

@Mary G: Although to be fair, it’s highly likely the stylist offered to open up the salon premises where there is a sink and product much more easily available, and felt, since the salon was in fact closed to the public, this was simply a permissible use of private space made available by the owner for purposes of a shampoo and blow out. He apparently assured Nancy that such was the case. No members of the public were present, and Nancy wore her mask for all steps except the shampoo and rinse (as common sense and physics demands if one expects to keep mask and ties dry). Nancy’s mistake was in trusting her stylist to keep her private hair appointments private (which he did), but failing to account for a wingnut salon owner who would exploit the trust of both stylist and customer. Plus, Nancy is not responsible for any of the policies the salon owner is so exercised about, and her only sin has been to follow the guidelines issued by our President’s very own administration.
