Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Come on, man.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

So many bastards, so little time.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

How stupid are these people?

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

We still have time to mess this up!

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Next week a Democrat will send an email or get a hair-cut and everyone will forget that Trump called fallen soldiers losers and suckers.

So let’s make hay while we can by raising money for Democratic Senate candidates.

Lots of requests recently for Bullock and Greenfield, so let’s do them.

Theresa Greenfield, Iowa Senate

Goal Thermometer

Steve Bullock, Montana Senate

Hoping Bullock can pull it off – Montana feels like one of those states where Cheeto is probably quite a bit less popular than he is in other rural states. I also hope that Montana Dems can beat that jerkoff Gianforte in the governor’s race (again).

Wasn’t Labor Day supposed to be Mitch McConnell’s cutoff for allowing Senate candidates to cut loose from Trump if the Trump poll numbers didn’t improve?  I’m guessing they’ll all come up with some kind of reason to stick with Trump (like using Gallup for before- and Rasmussen for after-polls), but no way senate candidates run against (or even without supporting) Trump

Anyone know how Doug Jones is doing in AL? Earlier in the summer he and Tuberville were pretty close, but a poll in early August showed that Tuberville has since pulled ahead with a pretty commanding lead. Is this just AL reverting to the mean (= beet red), or is Jones just not getting the support he needs? It was always going to be an uphill battle for Jones to keep that seat, but I do wish it were closer at this point.

Recall what legendary hardball campaigner Lyndon Johnson said about planting a rumor that his opponent had a fetish for fucking pigs: whether its true or not, i want to make the motherfucker have to deny it (ie thereby reinforcing the image of the story in the public mind).

That dynamic is much more powerful when the allegation is consistent with what the public already knows about the opponent – trumps quite public trash-talk about john mcCain is coming back to haunt his attempted denials of the atlantic story and ditto trumps dissing of the khan family whose son died in combat

Thanks for the link to the all-BJ page. I’ve been feeling itchy about using this moment to mobilize money, since Republicans are looking a tad more vulnerable now than a week ago. I’ve given to a few Dems today!

I want to bump Raphael Warnock (the BJ actblue is here). It’s a serious worry for me. First two past the post go to the runoff. Current polling has a GOP in the top spot & second spot, with Warnock a very close third (w/in margin of error I’d think), and another Dem fourth. I know open races are hard to get a team approach, but this was going to be a hard — but not at all impossible — seat to flip. Dems splitting the vote and as a result sitting out the runoff would be a foolish tragedy.

White Alabamans, will likely me more conservative than the median American for the foreseeable future. But the state is only 65% white, so if the POC vote can be protected & motivated in a post-SCOTUS Voting Rights shitscape, I think it would only take a small percent allied white vote (there are urban and more-liberal whites in AL, just not nearly enough) to move AL politics a fair bit.

I don’t understand how anyone can come away from all this thinking Trump is ‘strong.’ Right or wrong (the latter, but anyway) he has the authority to shut down Stars and Stripes. He made the call. The Pentagon got to work on it.

And then people got mad at him for it, and he reversed the decision in no time flat. And he’s done similar things countless times! He’s the most flabby and weak of leaders. He’s completely sway-able by changing sentiment.

I shouldn’t be surprised this far in by how 60,000,000 Americans swallow his performative nasty guy schtick and see it as strength, when he’s a complete chinless fraud (not to mention that he cannot, ever, stand up to Putin).

Trump doubles down on his “White is Right” election strategy

President Trump is ordering federal agencies to stop funding training on topics including “critical race theory” and “white privilege” with taxpayer dollars, according to a memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought that was released on Friday.

Why everybody knows that racism in America disappeared after 1776, 1860, 1865, 1900, 1964, 2008, last week. To suggest otherwise is unpatriotic.

“It has come to the President’s attention that Executive Branch agencies have spent millions of taxpayer dollars to date ‘training’ government workers to believe divisive, anti-American propaganda,” Vought wrote in a letter to the heads of executive departments and agencies.

They think about it all the time.  The problem is it’s an asymmetric threat.  There’s a serious down side to being Trump’s enemy if he wins, but there’s no equivalent down side to being Biden’s enemy.  So they suck up to Trump.

@Yutsano: The Georgia NAACP asked Lieberman to drop out on August 7.

    Kilgore at NYMag – https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/08/georgia-naacp-head-asks-matt-lieberman-to-drop-senate-bid.html

A Democratic Senate candidate in Georgia wrote and self-published a deeply bizarre novel in 2018, featuring a main character who believes that for most of his life he owned an imaginary slave who could communicate with plants and animals …

The main character, an elderly white southern man named Benno, regularly deploys the N-word and says some members of the Ku Klux Klan were “basically good people.” The 213-page novel, in which the racist main character tells the story of his life to a narrator with a biography similar to Lieberman’s, ultimately suggests Lucius functioned as a sort of pet for Benno.

    sitting outside sniffing the asphalt

When I was a child and lived in an area where mosquito abatement was a serious issue, the DDT truck would regularly come through the neighborhood spraying and all the children would run through the clouds of DDT enjoying the odor of exotic hydrocarbons.

I have since realized this was not necessarily the best move.

ETA: not so much an issue for you – it’s the chlorination in DDT that makes it a real problem.

Taking a longer than usual time to will myself into some semblance of wakeitude today. Half watching something on Prime which doesn’t much tax the brain cells, a Czechoslovakian slapstick comedy from the 70s, while puttering about the abode.

Can we start a rumor that some of the alleged Trump, supporters are actually antifa agents? A good old fashioned circular firing squad would be great fun to watch.
