Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

This fight is for everything.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

He really is that stupid.

This blog will pay for itself.

Bark louder, little dog.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

I’ve officially reached the age where the difference in 75 degrees and 60 degrees is “Wow this is so nice sitting on my porch in shorts” to “Where the fuck are my wool socks and space heaters?”

To answer Watergirl’s question:

Blazing Saddles
Breaking Away
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Uncle Buck
Spaceballs

Also, I can’t believe we have raised a million dollars. Were this a right wing operation, I’d half kept half of that and bought a boat and spent the other half at an ad agency owned by DougJ.

    67F can go either way.
66F and below, I have to turn on the heater.

I’m going to need HRT before I chime in. My lady just went on it and it made a huge difference. Yay estro-patch. She’s an estronaut.

I think we need to have a million party. Maybe some candidates will stop by and thank us? Do an AMA? hahahaha

A GOP source with eyes on SC tells me despite his in-your-face flip flop on voting in a SCOTUS justice 40-something days before an election, Lindsey Graham is privately rattled about that tie he’s in with @harrisonjaime. He’s never really faced a viable, well-funded challenger.

I haven’t donated to Jaime Harrison yet, but it’s wonderful to see weak willed Lindsey start to realize that his actions, choices, and words will matter when his constituents vote this year.

Just wait a while and your tolerance for temperature will keep narrowing.  On the bright side, you will no longer need summer or winter clothes, depending on where you live.   My problem is that my shoulders and upper arms want the temperature about 15-20 degrees warmer than the rest of my body.  Shrugs, shorts and sandals is fine around the house, but people look at me funny when I go out like that in December and January.

We turned on the heat today for the first time this season. Warmth is nice!

On the third anniversary of Hurricane Maria, it’s not enough to just remember the devastation wrought by the storm. We must act to ensure nothing like it ever happens again and to ensure Puerto Rico gets the full dignity and respect it deserves. https://t.co/2zOkcVkYEz

Well I struck out on finding a vigil to attend, but I did do my own bit to honor RBG, a small group gathered to ring bells in her memory.   To an outsider, there was an octave of bells, sounding steadily for about 40 minutes.  Here is a bit from near the end. https://youtu.be/_35lMT8RzYM

In Foxboro  MA, 20-Sept-2020 A quarter peal of 1264 Bob Major, on handbells.

    Trebles – C. Perry

    3-4 – E. Hansen (conductor)

    5-6 – J. Del Papa

    Tenors- L. Dickerson

In honor of the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg-may her memory be for a blessing.

The English have a particular system for ringing churchbells, with all the bells ringing sounded in one order, then again in a different order, repeating for a specific number of rows, none repeating.  Its part music, part mathematical group theory worked out in real time.   For fans of classic whodunits, try Dorothy Sayers, The Nine Taylors, it will provide an introduction.  Anyhow extended performances are often used to commemorate events, births, deaths, weddings, coronations, etc.

There are other performances that have or will be happening.  They should get tabulated here https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/event.php?id=13133

Perhaps we could finally change our nation anthem to something else – something from West Side Story!

Totally silly response, but I agree.  It’s a travesty that they were thrown paper towels after the hurricane, and I don’t imagine for a minute – that if Trump comes through with actual money to help Puerto Rice – that there’s even one single person who won’t see it as a craven attempt to buy their votes, for a fleeting moment, before he shits on them again.

@rjnerd: Change ringing is such a wonderful tradition, as you note. One of my Sunday rituals is to track down “Bells on Sunday” on BBC Radio 4. There’s a snippet at 7:45p Eastern just before the final Shipping Forecast, a staple of the BBC broadcasting world. You listen to various conditions around the English Channel and elsewhere, culminating in a rousing “God Save the Queen” at 01.00 (8:00p Eastern).

I am surprised that more than one person knew what I was talking about.  The best analogy I have for explaining the exercise to Americans, is imagine someone explaining poker to someone from another planet.   “We have 52 pieces of paper, and on one side they are all the same, on the other they are all different…..”

Right now, except for rare events like this evenings performance, we have to stay in practice with online simulation systems, and put up with the lag. We don’t even get to use an actual bell, instead, we have to hit keys like a video game controller.  (I am working on the last part, if I can get the dueling libraries to actually compile, I will have a motion sensing “Handbell Input Device” )

As anyone that has experienced an office group meeting attempting to sing Happy Birthday to someone over Zoom can attest, lag makes a real hash of things. Those that have seen performances by real musicians, that show as a bunch of tiled faces, They aren’t just sitting in front of the laptop and playing.

The way it works is like a multi-track studio recording.  For those, the drum track goes down, each performer then plays  in synch with the track, unable to hear any other player.  Their streams are collected, they get slid around with delays until all the time codes match, and that result is what you see.  (With classic studio taping some play together, others like the person adding the brass accent line may lay down their track a week later)
