Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

No one could have predicted…

Ah, the different things are different argument.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Consistently wrong since 2002

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

In my day, never was longer.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Let’s keep it going

We raised 100K this weekend. Let’s keep it going. At readers’ request, I just added Mike Espy from MS. He’s got a tough race but supporting good candidates willing to take on tough races is probably the most important thing we can do longterm. Of course you can see all the candidates we are supporting here.

Goal Thermometer

Here’s some others I like

Raphael Warnock, Georgia Senate (special election)

Theresa Greenfield, Iowa Senate

$100K is awesome.  Although it doesn’t make me less sad about the precipitating event, the response is pretty darned impressive.

Anyone happen to have the most recent polls for Warnock and Greenfield? My wife and I are looking to drop a few chunks of change on the Senate. Trying to figure out what the best bang for buck is.

I’ve been contributing to Warnock, so didn’t give to the thermometer just now. But I tossed a little bit Espy’s way. Thanks for putting up a funder for him.

@MisterForkbeard: I’ve seen polls showing Greenfield with a low single digit lead in Iowa. Warnock is starting to get separation from Lieberman and Tarver among Democratic candidates in the “jungle” primary, but still may come in third if Lieberman or Tarver doesn’t  drop out. Neither has a real chance.   Among the republican candidates, Collins and Loefler are going after each other hammer and tongs; Warnock has a real shot in an early January runoff if he can get past the primary.

I’m supporting Greenfield and Cunningham. They’re both winnable and their opponents are especially odious.

@MisterForkbeard: Check at Sam Wang’s site. He’s got a table for best bang for the buck. Alaska and Montana are high on the list, along with many of DougJ’s thermometers. Some people aren’t on there because the odds are bad or because they’re already swimming in cash.

I donated to Greenfield over the weekend, but forgot to use the BJ link so it didn’t get counted in our total.  Going to hit up Espy now.

Greenfield is in a dead heat.  Warnock is in a jungle primary.  Here’s what Nate Cohn says

@MisterForkbeard Similar calculus in our house.  I used the map on Cook Political.com to get an idea of the “toss up” & “leans” races and then drilled down on fivethirtyeight.com into those individual state races to see what was happening.  Lots of tight races to give to.

I am glad people are doing this.  I am still keeping to Biden and WI for my donations.  There is enough need here that I don’t need to go farther.

All efforts in Wisconsin are to be encouraged. It is a critical state

    @Matt McIrvin:

Me too. I’m looking at the world from Southern California. We do have a tight congressional race in CA-48. Harley Rouda – blue dog-ish – defeated Dana Rohrabacher in R+4 district. We need him to hold on to it.

    @James E Powell: There’s also CA-25, Katie Hill’s old district, they’ve got that as a toss-up.

I’d like to see us jingle the tip jar in the near future for Anthony Brindisi (NY-22). In 2018, he flipped a Trump +15 district by just a few thousand votes and the former rep, Claudia Tenney — a batshit Trumper — is gunning for her old seat back. It will be a close race and money to support ground game infrastructure as well as media buys (pretty cheap around here) will make a big difference.

Doug, how about some love for Diane Mitsch Bush in Colorado’s CD3? That race has apparently moved from “Strong Republican” to “Lean Republican”, in part because Cue-A-Nun spoutin’, gun-totin’ Loren Boebert keeps shooting herself in the foot, figuratively if not literally.

Saving my few shekels for this race, Biden, and local races, but so glad you’re doing this and so glad other jackals are able and willing to be so generous. Thank you!

Someone said they couldn’t figure out which 13 races the “Get Mitch or Die Trying” fund was going to. Here’s a list of the state Senate races they are funding:

Here are the top Senate races where we believe your donation can make the biggest difference (in no particular order):

    – Colorado

    – Maine

    – North Carolina

    – Montana

    – Iowa

    – Georgia (both seats!)

    – Alabama

    – Michigan

    – Alaska

    – South Carolina

    – Texas

    – Kansas

    – Mississippi

I’ve donated so much to ActBlue this weekend my credit card sent me a security alert. I said it was fine, and fortunately they hadn’t done a preliminary denial as they often do, on several occasions correctly.

Thanks, DougJ. I have trying for some of the “moneyball” strategic plays, but  agree strongly with your comment below, so also donated to Espy and Jones (again).

I’m on the other end of that paradigm, WV is so red I don’t think there’s anything Balloon-Juice jackals can do. But I contribute to one congressional and the Senatorial candidates anyway. More to leans or toss-up states!

Take all polls with a grain of salt but FYI:

    MISSISSIPPI (!!) SENATE RACE:Mike Espy (D): 40%  Cindy Hyde-Smith (R): 41%  https://t.co/Sx0Y15R87z— Tim Hogan (@timjhogan) September 21, 2020

Today I gave my end of 3rd quarter donations 10 days early. 10 of the candidates in competitive senate races were in the mix. I did not give to Hickenlooper, Kelly, or Gideon as I think they looking good. And I think McGrath, who is just not the greatest candidate, is a waste of resources at this time. My 2 cents YMMV.

If Warnock can come in 2nd, that would be wonderful news. That insane ad Kelly launched today will, alas, help Collins.

Espy note about his wretched opponent from Mississippi Today:

Hyde-Smith, meanwhile, has struggled raising cash this cycle. Among incumbent senators, Hyde-Smith has raised less than 96 incumbent senators, including Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, who doesn’t face another election until 2024. The three Senate incumbents who raised less than Hyde-Smith have announced they will not seek re-election.

@Marcopolo: Just stopped by here to mention the Espy poll.

I’m going in for $80 for him today. Because why the hell not. We have to mobilize voters in these Southern states. They don’t have to be the GOP strongholds they’ve been.
