Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Let’s finish the job.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Their freedom requires your slavery.

No one could have predicted…

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republicans in disarray!

Infrastructure week. at last.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The only remedy for this blatantly authoritarian behavior is for voters to turn out for Biden-Harris in such overwhelming numbers that Trump & the GOP can't steal the election. https://t.co/hVdMMsbUgq

When Trump talks about "fake ballots", he's really talking about Americans he doesn't think should vote. https://t.co/Kk290XNA6r

New @QuinnipiacPoll finds that "just 30 percent of likely voters think the country will know the winner of the presidential election on Election Night, while 63 percent say they think we will not know." Glad this realization is sinking in with voters.

Arpropos of voting, a friend who votes with great regularity checked her registration and discovered that it had gone *poof*, so if you haven’t checked your registration, check today.  And, by the way, this was in New York, not in one of those states where there’s skullduggery going on.

    Danny Rivero @TooMuchMe
BREAKING: Florida AG just sent this letter to the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement asking them to look into “potential violations of election law.” Bloomberg’s effort to pay off fines and fees of people w/ felony convictions is the target.

It may mean his aides can’t get him to strategically pick Barbara Lagoa (Cuban-American wingnut judge) for the SCOTUS instead of the Handmaid lady. I could see a situation where there has been so much early and mail in voting that the EC is out of reach for Trump as soon as the polls close in CA.  Lots of east coast states will start counting mail in ballots the minute their polls close.  They will be announcing early returns as soon as west coast polls close.  We will probably know the outcome on election night.  Trump/Barr will do their best to try to invalidate legally cast votes, but that’s going to be hard in states where the margin isn’t within the recount percent.  I don’t think the GOP is going to have the gift of one state that could make the difference like FL in 2000.  And the courts won’t be getting involved unless there is some reason to recount. Doesn’t mean the GOP won’t try some Brooks Brothers stand off in a bunch of swing states.  But this isn’t 2016 or 2000.

And this plan to try to claim victory on Facebook before the polls have closed – that’s going to hurt Trump  more than Biden.  How many deplorables or Stans will believe it and then not bother to vote?  I don’t see Democrats doing that.

The most likely case is that they’ll be trying to work Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin at once. And the real vote won’t actually be that close in any of those states–it could just be looking good for Trump on Election Night, because they process mail ballots late.

Updating a comment I made down a few threads that MO’s 1st Lady was COVID + & why I am proud to be a mask wearing D:

Missouri governor, opponent of mandatory masks, has COVID-19

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican who has steadfastly refused to require residents to wear masks, tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said Wednesday.

Parson was tested after his wife, Teresa, tested positive earlier in the day. Teresa Parson had experienced mild symptoms, including a cough and nasal congestion, spokeswoman Kelli Jones said. She took a rapid test that came back positive and a nasal swab test later confirmed the finding. The governor’s rapid test showed he tested positive and he is still awaiting results from the swab test.

As the article states, this needs to be verified by a swab test but I am feeling some schadenfreude right now.

Barr has some plan ready to go on election day to challenge and halt counting of ballots not cast in person on election day, with the challenges especially targeted at critical swing states trump/barr believe they have best chance of having at least a slight edge in early in-person vote counting.  They want to create an extended post-election period with the count frozen at a snapshot where the result is slightly in their favor ir at worst too close to call.  Count on dirty trick roger stone-style squads harassing election officials to muddy up the tesults further.

    @japa21:

You notice he expects one of the conservative justices to go against him, probably Roberts. But I think at least 2 would, Roberts and Gorsuch.

Roberts has a fair amount in common with some of the NeverTrumpers, in that Trump’s rise has the potential to diminish his power within the reactionary movement and the Republican party.

If he undermines the the election results to keep Trump in power, then the court will be reduced to writing explanations for the decrees of God-Emperor Trump rather than having any actual power to decide what is legal and what isn’t. That will eviscerate the power of one John G. Roberts, not to mention the other reactionaries.

Roberts ought to be smart enough to understand this, and as you suggest, Gorsuch may be as well.

@debbie: That’s the problem. What Trump wants and demands, here, is absolute craven servitude in the most brazen fashion. I bet he can get Kavanaugh to do it, because I bet Kavanaugh is dirty: vulnerable to blackmail.

What Trump wants is to be ‘elected’ King and go about disempowering ALL THE OTHER BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT, most emphatically including the courts. That includes the Supreme Court, which are accustomed to see themselves as a co-equal branch. Trump is looking to fire them: turn them into courtiers.

They must surely have awareness of this, having to deal with Kavanaugh on a regular basis. It must be obvious what direction this is going.

Is Kavanaugh enough, or can Trump and the people behind him, credibly threaten the Supreme Court so severely that they will cave(anaugh) and trade away their very real power to him? To an absolute lame duck who is looking to make them responsible for overthrowing the whole electoral system of the United States?

I feel like Trump has not thought this through.

@cmorenc: I highly doubt it. Honestly, people here should know that after the last 3+ years, the absolute WORST thing that Trump and his administration are good at is planning ANYTHING at all. Their modus operandi, pure and simple, is chaos all the time. As soon as Trump starts flinging poo on Election Night, Barr will almost certainly spring into action. But the idea that the clowns in this administration have any fucking clue about how to put a plan together is a joke. TBH, it’s also why there was clearly no super-detailed collusion going on between the 2016 campaign and Russia, just Russia using a bunch of rubes and useful idiots to go along with the measure.

Now, my main concern, as I was thinking about this, was if somehow a case gets to SCOTUS about state legislatures overriding the popular vote with their own slate of electors. Given the focus on ‘textualism’, I could easily see Barrett (she will be the next justice) and Gorsuch going along with that. Alito and Uncle Clarence probably will too, because they have proven themselves to be hacks. I honestly think it may come down to Brettski, who I don’t think is going to go along with such a bullshit rationale IMO. Maybe that’s placing too much hope in him, but I cannot see the right-wingers completely flushing away their legitimacy and possibly leading the country to the brink of near-anarchy by doing such a thing.

@opiejeanne:I want someone saneto tell me what an unsolicited ballot is.

Oh, I’m getting one, but I’m fixing to use it. Vermont is mailing everyone the ballot, and I got turned away from the town clerk’s office because I thought I could go there and early vote. It was pretty disconcerting, but when I looked into it a bit further, it checked out with what other state web pages were saying.

They’re mailing EVERYONE ballots, unsolicited, to facilitate early and absentee voting. You’re meant to vote by mail if you mean to early vote. They just started mailing them a couple days ago, they mark you as ‘having requested’ a ballot on 9/2 if you had made no request, if you haven’t got the stuff by October 15th you should ask to get it fixed, and you seal it and sign it and mail it. I imagine I’ll get my ballot in less than a week, and I don’t anticipate problems, and they can’t see how you filled it out unless they go and steam ’em all open or something: I don’t expect that, not in Vermont.

Still kind of stomach-churning, but that’s 2020 for you.

So that’s an ‘unsolicited’ ballot. Mail voting, in a state where they are sending the ballots to EVERYONE. I can keep people posted on whether this promise is kept. Then it’s up to me whether to do that or to ignore it and insist on voting in person: I’m inclined to mail it, what with the sheer drama level of all this. I have as good a chance of banking my vote via mail, in Vermont, as I have anywhere in the USA.

Just told him I couldn’t deal with him anymore, that he was living in a fantasy world driven by grievance and needing to be ‘pure’ and that he was driving me insane with his counterproductive and delusional insistence on this stuff. Unfriended on facebook and all.

For context, his more recent online friends that he really identifies with are people who believe that Harris wants to enslave us all and force us to fight fires and that she’s really a secret republican. Oh, and that because Dems gave republicans a small amount of time at the convention to promote a crossover vote the Dems really just hate the Left and love Republicans. Also, Biden will make Romney his SoS.

I’m hoping this snaps him out of it – I’m one of something like 5 real life friends he still has left, and I’d been financially supporting him for the past several years with small payments, etc. Probably not. Fuck ’em.

Trump just held a press conference where he refused to say he would accept the result of the election. Usual rant about “unsolicited ballots” and fraud. I think he is relying on the Supreme Court to save him but I don’t think it will work. I think Roberts has had it with Trump’s incompetence and stupidity and Gorsuch has shown some degree of independence.

Of course, it means there will be some delay in them achieving their policy objectives but their still young, Biden will probably only serve one term and surely Americans won’t vote for a woman of colour.  Four years isn’t too long to wait.

I think the big issue will be RWNJ violence in the two months between the election and Biden’s inauguration. I don’t see Red State Governors really doing anything to stop it and Trump will be fanning the flames.

We supported him for a few years with regular donations, used to send him games and cookies to keep his spirits up, etc. Even offered to pay for him to get some remote schooling and certification that would let him work from home.

I’m hopeful this snaps him out of it, but he’s somewhat self-destructive, likes to mope around and has descended into the left version of QANON – which is insane but not quite as insane as actual QANON. Same insistence that he’s secretly the hero and everyone else is letting down the nation, etc.

But right, just couldn’t deal with it.

@Baud: It’s not quite QAnon, but it’s kind of close. It’s what you’d think: Every bad rumor about democrats is true, and you can’t trust them or their records and policies because they’ll lie to you all the time. He’s one of the people that was really pissed at AOC for endorsing Biden, etc.

Just for fun, I looked at the Wikipedia entry on Contingent Elections:

All three contingent elections in the 1800s were held by the outgoing Congress, as, at the time, congressional terms ended/began on the same day as presidential terms. In the event of a future Electoral College deadlock regarding either the presidential election or the vice presidential election, it will be the incoming Congress holding a contingent election. This is because the 1933 20th Amendment changed it so that congressional terms now end/begin before presidential and vice presidential terms do.

Man, wouldn’t be fun, in an alternative universe kinda way, for Donnie’s minions to pull all this stuff and it causes a huge wave election that flips red states to blue (as far as state delegations go) so that it ultimately ends up in the new House and they vote for Biden anyway?

    @Jay:

BTW, it was only for the bullets that entered white neighbours apartments, not the ones that entered black neighbours apartments, less than half the bullets, not including the ones that killed Brianna Taylor.

Make sure you don’t miss what’s happening here: Jonathan Mattingly, who fired his gun the night he raided #BreonnaTaylor’s home is not only NOT SORRY or regretful-but he is OFFENDED at the mere *thought* that he might be held accountable for killing a woman in cold blood. https://t.co/LgSSrVpsQV— brittany packnett cunningham does not do remixes. Really strange to not see the phrase ‘GET RID OF THE BALLOTS’ all over Balloon Juice.

Trump actually said that. Man said, on camera:

“Well, we’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said. “You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots and the ballots are a disaster.”
Pressed further, Trump said: “We’ll want to have — get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very — we’ll have a very peaceful — there won’t be a transfer frankly, there’ll be a continuation.”

That’s literal. I saw the video of it. His answer to ‘how will you guarantee a peaceful transfer of power’ is ‘come and get me, coppers!’

Ask him that again. Feed him more rope. He is NOT supposed to say shit like that, his tyrant license will be fuckin’ revoked, the dumbshit.

You’re not supposed to say ‘get rid of the ballots, and then there will not BE a transfer of power, there’ll be a continuation’. Like fucking hell there will be. Anyone asked the military, who swear to the Constitution, what they think about that? Just because shit-for-brains cares about nobody and nothing doesn’t mean every other fucking person in the country is as brain-damaged as he is.
