I have no idea why these songs might be on my mind. ??
Got any good songs you want to share, current events related or otherwise?

Some truly extraordinary guitar playing from Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge.

I am waiting to sing along to NaNaNaNa Hey Hey Goodbye to Orange Dbag on Jan 20th. I think they should have some massive zoom event done early in the morning to send to him and all his enablers via Twitter in the afternoon. Kind of like the HS graduation deal they did. Just to see that many people is going to needle him.

@counterfactual: Stayin’ Alive seems very appropriate to 2020.

Excellent choices! Jennifer, Marvin, and the Temptations and the funny chaser from Lily
Here’s two awesome songs. One serious (Pearl Jam): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke3Vpv7fFKs
And one funny (fuck the president): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8HRppCJh1M

Do I need to offer a prize for the people who get the progression of songs I embedded?

This is another one we can all get behind.
Also, I had my annual physical today. I got a flu shot and the first shingles shot. They say that over have the people who get the shingles shot feel like ass for a couple of days. It looks like am one of them. Woohoo!
ETA: I know I’ve posted this song before but it deserves the attention. Even my mom likes it.

Can’t really share them (as they were a live thing), but last night I attended the Virtual gala for Blue Heron Renaissance Choir. A group that specializes in music of the 15th century and earlier. (they are in the middle of recording the works of Ochegeim) Of course they had to do something a little different than their usual fare, especially since they can’t gather in large groups to take on their 5 -7 part polyphonic repertoire . So they all got to do solo’s or a few duets. Their choice: Broadway show tunes.
It was great fun.

@TaMara (HFG): Germans, Pearl Harbor.

Marvin Gaye’s isolated vocals on Grapevine was posted here not too long ago I think.
Goku (Amerikan Baka)
Don’t Stand So Close to Me (extended version, 1986)
I loved the extended version of that song. I always try to search for 12′ extended versions of songs on YT
Don’t Dream It’s Over-Crowded House (extended version)

Just need to share some awful news. The OC sheriffs shot and killed a homeless black guy here; my troubled teen housemate was friends with him, and is devastated. He bought some flowers to take to the spot and was on the ABC news in LA. There were already protesters there and he was resentful of them, because they wouldn’t have had the time of day for the guy when he was alive. This is so awful. I thought I understood this stuff, but it’s different close to home. Please send light or prayers or whatever you have for our boy
ETA: Sorry to crash a fun music thread, but I needed to get it out.

@Goku (Amerikan Baka): There’s always the 30 minute version of “Helter Skelter”.

@Baudolino: @Bo Curry: Letting us know once, with one user name was sufficient. You have to give one of use with moderator’s rights the time to actually be on the site, notice you’re in moderation, and then free the comment.
Also, please pick one user name and stick with it.

@Mary G: So sorry, saw a news alert about the shooting on my watch.

@Mary G: It’s what we’re here for.

@Mary G:
Don’t worry about it. You needed somebody to vent to

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
Now that you bring up the Beatles, I was surprised to learn that they never liked the whole “mop top” phase and that they were basically burned out as early as 1966 after releasing the Revolver album

Amy K let Ted Cruz have it with both barrels and I am loving it:

For the Michael Kiwanuka fans here, he won a big prize –the Mercury prize– in the UK last night. This set is nice.

It’d been a while since I’d heard that Lilly Allen song. Very catchy. I found my self singing “fuck you very very mu-u-u-u-uch” as I peeled an orange at the sink just now. :)
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Goku (Amerikan Baka): They stopped touring since they couldn’t hear themselves singing on stage, but burned out? Nah, they did some of their best music post ’66.
Omnes Omnibus
@prostratedragon: Cool. I love his music.

I’m part of a zoom group of guys who meet on Wednesday nights. We’ve been working through a book on white privilege, chapter by chapter. But this week, post-Breonna, we set the book aside and just checked in. Part of the talk was about arts as a method of self care.
This Brother Ali song was offered up. (He’s a Minneapolis based hip hop artist, started with Rhymesayers Collective). Enjoy.
Goku (Amerikan Baka)
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
Well, they were until they started doing drugs that expanded their creative visions, so to speak
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Goku (Amerikan Baka): They were using stimulants back in their Hamburg days. Dylan introduced them to pot and, of course, Dr. Robert gave them LSD. By today’s standards, their tour schedules were brutal. They toured every year from 1963 to 1966, and these were international tours: US, UK, Europe, eastern Asia, and Australia. Harrison probably hated the 1966 tour the most since he got married in early 1966 to Pati Boyd.

The impossibly NSFW “Galactic Mermaid” from the Carole & Tuesday soundtrack sums up my feelings about most of this year, actually.

Recently stumbled on a new version of an old favorite Cuban song. The one on ytube that I already knew is an impromptu version from the documentary Cuba Feliz. Is that Compay Segundo and a couple other of the Buena Vista Social Club?
“Lágrimas negras”
The new one is with Bebo Valdés (father of Chucho) and Diego El Cigale, Pacquito D’Rivera sort of on the down-low:

On the other hand, I for some reason or other found myself a few days ago looking for this one:
“I’m Deranged,” David Bowie
RandyG
“Georgia On My Mind”
“Friday On My Mind”
“Gentle On My Mind”
“Always On My Mind”
“You Were On My Mind”
“Carolina In My Mind” (Close enough?)
James E Powell
“Ghosts” from the soon to be released Springsteen album Letter to You.
“Confusion Wheel” from the soon to be released Wildflowers and All the Rest, the long-awaited Wildflowers reissue and comprehensive collection.

Always been partial to this one. EDT: Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

@prostratedragon:
great song from a great record.

Love – You Set the Scene
Arthur Lee and Love are always good for a pick-me-up, especially “You Set the Scene”.
1967 had a bumper crop of great albums, but over the years I’ve been leaning more and more to the opinion that Forever Changes is the best of the lot.
Pogues – Turkish Song of the Damned
The Pogues are another band that’s always there to make me feel better. “Turkish Song of the Damned” is about the dead returning to drag a man who betrayed them down to hell. This might be considered topical if one were inclined.
Atticus Dogsbody
Another “Fuck You” song.

Good to see Amy’s as feisty as ever.

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” is, sadly, as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.

Also, James Jamerson is one of the greatest bass players ever.
