Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

People are complicated. Love is not.

The National Guard is not Batman.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I’ll plop this here instead of doing a post…

I can formally unveil my Electoral College model. It's based on data from American Veterinary Medical Association* and operates on the thesis that Biden will win all the states with more cats than dogs and Trump will win all the states with more dogs than cats. pic.twitter.com/vXUp5v68Z3— R.J. Well, DeSantis just announced that Florida is opening up completely. No COVID restrictions and towns are forbidden from even establishing them.

Presumably he did the calculation based on the big wave they had back in the summer and realized the mass deaths wouldn’t really pile up until after November 3. Meantime, everyone can go back to the bar! It’s over!

As a liberal, I am just fine with fine black women.

    May I interject?

I just realized that Lisa Stansfield’s 90’s dance groove “Been Around The World” is a rare example of OG creepy stalker songs.

Sinbad is an odd lyrical relic as well.

    @Matt McIrvin:

Well, DeSantis just announced that Florida is opening up completely. No COVID restrictions and towns are forbidden from even establishing them.

There seems to be some uncertainty as to what towns, counties, etc. might be able to do.

DeSantis said his new executive order lifts that restriction statewide, though local governments can keep additional limits in place if they’re justified for health or economic reasons….

Broward County Mayor Dale Holness told NPR member station WLRN on Friday, “We’re hoping that the governor will allow us to have deeper restrictions than the rest of the state. We have a greater spread of the virus in South Florida than other parts of the state.”

Miami-Dade officials said they were still assessing what the order means for the county. Mayor Carlos Giménez told The Miami Herald that he believed the county would still be able to enforce its face covering mandate but “will have to speak to our attorneys about [our] ability to enforce individual fines.”

All this certainly amplifies confusion. Also, we don’t know how citizens might respond. A significant number of people might still at least pay attention to social distancing, or not go out as often.

It’s a stupid gamble by the governor, but we should look to see what happens after 21 and 28 days.

4,000 spectators in the Olympiastadion for Hertha Berlin vs. Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday. You could count the masks on your fingers.

The German government has lost its damn mind, and people will die for no good reason.

God bless Anne Laurie’s late night open threads. I’m awake because I think the dog has a UTI- she woke me up at 2AM whining and aaaallllllmost made it outside before she had an accident. She then peed 4 times outside (and capped it off by eating something off the sidewalk AUGH). Her head is now on my stomach and she’s snoring, but I’m afraid to go back to sleep because I’m guessing she’s going to need to go again soon.

I hope it’s just a UTI. Googling her symptoms was not comforting.

@Major Major Major Major: both dogs and cats probably dislike Trump. Back when he first took office there was a story he didn’t like that the Pences brought their dogs with them to live in the Naval Observatory because dogs were dirty. He doesn’t like them, so I would expect they don’t like him.

Also that apparently Pence ignored him that time.

@Nicole: Always remember, late night fears are just borrowing problems from tomorrow, which will have enough of its own.

If you’re *SCARED*, look for a 24-hour emergency vet – and I mean that in the “trust your instincts” way, not in the “panic if you love your animal” way. If you’re not – rest well, and you’ll find out soon enough.

Best wishes for you and your companions.

@LongHairedWeirdo: Thanks- this just started tonight and she’s acting normal otherwise, so I’m going to see if we can manage until 9AM when the vet, who, thankfully, is a block away, opens.

Lord knows this dog likes to lick herself enough it’s entirely plausible she gave herself a bacterial infection.

    TMI?

@Nicole: I’m a cat person, not a dog person, so I really only know how it affects cats. Well, OK, and humans, because I have had UTIs and other such things myself. But they definitely cause this sort of problem.

(Cats concentrate their urine enough to make UTIs relatively rare, but as the kidneys start weakening, the concentration drops, and I’ve had cats with kidney issues. Got one now, in fact. She needs to go in for a checkup next month or so.)

One thing I love about the ad is that they explain the importance of down-ballot voting.

Speaking of unconventional GOTV effort, several of my friends are involved in Drag Out The Vote — a nationwide effort by drag queens and kings to raise awareness on voting processes, rights and regulations, and encourage voting, especially in the LGBTQ community.

@Matt McIrvin: DeSantis did the Benjamin calculation. Adam brought this up in a thread yesterday. Florida has no income tax and tourism’s dried up so he’s letting the natives loose. It will fail since sick and dead people ultimately don’t buy anything but that’s the rationale. Monstrous but there it is.

@206inKY: I hope the older people are able to vote.  I know a lot of elderly people who haven’t really left the house since March/April because of COVID.  I am pinning my hopes on mail-in voting.

I wish we could make the process clearer/easier to minimize the number of ways a mail-in ballot can be discounted.  I know it depends on each state’s board of elections.  I hope this election shows people we need to make the system more robust.  And that people stay engaged.  Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty and all that.
