Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Books are my comfort food!

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

If marriage is the equivalent of selling yourself into slavery, women with self respect should reject the offer.

Saw it for the first time on Professor Dan Drezner’s usually rather buttoned-down twitter feed, for the record.

Coming Soon to Balloon Juice- ONE XL CAT CAVE

by John Cole|  September 25, 202011:07 pm| 100 Comments

This post is in: Cat Blogging

I’m bored and depressed and I wanted to buy something but I am also kinda low on funds but also don’t need anything, so I was just trolling amazon and realized there IS something I could use. Rosie, as you know, has not been on the top of her game the last six months, and every now and then Steve steals “her” bed in the office. She will kick the others out if they get into it, but with Steve she just paces around whining for hours or until he will get out of it. Half the time I just make a bed out of a towel and pick the fat bastard up and put him on the chair, but it is really annoying, so I decided to get him a cat cave. Specifically, this one:

So hopefully next week I will have some Steve pics. Tomorrow he goes for a shave so you will have some tomorrow, too.

What is everyone up to?

On The Road After Dark – lashonharangue – Southern Chile Road Trip Part 3

by WaterGirl|  September 25, 202010:00 pm| 34 Comments

This post is in: On The Road, On The Road After Dark, Photo Blogging, Southern Chile Road Trip

I need to pose some questions to the On The Road peeps:

  • How would you feel about moving After Dark from 10pm to midnight?
  • Would that work just as well for most of you?
  • Work better for some of you?
  • Would it eliminate After Dark as something you read at the end of the day?
  • Would you only see the midnight After Dark in the morning along with the regular On The Road?
  • Anything else I should be asking related to a time change?

Please answer in the comments.  Thank you!  ~WaterGirl

lashonharangue in Chile

Continuing south from Ventisquero Yelcho we took a short detour off the Carretera Austral to Futaleufú. This is a small town that has become an adventure destination for white water thrill seekers from around the world. Since we didn’t fit that demographic, after a night stay in a cabaña we headed back to the Carretera Austral and made our way to the tiny port town of Raúl Marín Balmaceda.

Unfortunately that involved a ferry crossing in the smallest vessel of our trip. Unlike the others it was not roll on roll off. It had only one ramp. The ferry had room for just one other truck and our SUV. There was no place to turn the car around near the ferry ramp. I had to turn around about 200 feet up the hill, and back down onto the ferry using the side mirrors (the back was filled with our gear). I managed after several attempts that included some jerky stalls trying to work the clutch.

When we didn’t want to camp we usually found a hotel or cabaña using the internet and Bookings.com. We have a neat wifi hotspot device that we pay a flat fee for cellular based internet access regardless of carrier or country we are in.

We arrived in Raúl Marín Balmaceda and it was pouring rain. The village is built on a sand bluff above the surrounding water. It had about four streets and none seemed more than about three blocks long. Unfortunately there is no cell service there and we had no reservation. We started driving around looking for a lodging sign and saw a man walking down the street. In our broken Spanish we asked about where to stay. It turned out he had a lovely cabaña available next door to his house. Yay!

Raúl Marín BalmacedaDecember 10, 2018

The next day the weather had cleared. We and another couple took a nature tour in a small boat with a local guide. His English was very limited but my understanding was he had been mostly living off the land until the road and tourism had recently arrived. The boat drove around the estuary and we spotted lots of animals.

Friday Night Fights Open Thread: But the Media Village Idiots Miss Their Tire Swings!

This post is in: 2020 Elections, Media, Open Threads, Show Us on the Doll Where the Invisible Hand Touched You, Our Failed Media Experiment

The Trump campaign is packing people into buses without masks to get them to massive rallies in which people spend 3-4 hours pressed up against each other.

Part of this is rallies feel normal to political reporters. The unusual thing is calling a lid at 9 am. So we harp on that

— Molly Hensley-Clancy (@mollyhc) September 24, 2020

“Calling a lid” is professional jargon for ‘no more press interviews today’. Biden and his team have some other tasks in mind than inviting the Very Serious Media Representatives to private convos — preferably with donuts, in folksy/intimate settings! — so the V.S.M.R. are having a massive public group hissy-fit.

When these lazy bastids whine How can we do our jobs, if Biden won’t personally meet with us?… they’re admitting they’re stenographers, not reporters. It’s not as though there wasn’t enough new political material available every day to keep expensivly-credentialed, highly-paid professionals busy; *I* can’t find time or space to cover half the interesting stories, and I’m a mere poster on a not-quite-top-10,000 blog!

you can understand their concern, because if biden can win without indulging them regularly, there are going to be a lot of job cuts in january, and as someone who values being informed, i would think this were bad if i hadn’t lived through the 2016 campaign and everything since.

California Peeps: Want to Talk Propositions? Prop 14, 17-19, 21-23 and 25

by WaterGirl|  September 25, 20206:15 pm| 88 Comments

This post is in: 2020 Elections, Propositions, Initiatives, Amendments, Referendums, Vote Like Your Country Depends On It, This Fight Is For Everything

This is the first of three posts for anyone who wants to talk California Propositions.

pacem appellant has graciously agreed to share his views on the California propositions this year.  The intention is to provide a jumping off point for discussion, and a place for BJ folks to share their views, not to suggest to anyone how they should vote.

California Peeps: Want to Talk Propositions?

The 12 propositions will be covered in 3 separate posts. This one covers 14, 17-19, 21, 23 and 25.  The second one will cover 15.  The final one will cover 16, 20, and 24.  I expect to run one a day:  today, tomorrow and Sunday.  As soon as one is posted, it will appear under Election Action! in the sidebar.  (In the hamburger menu on mobile.)

Claire update

by David Anderson|  September 25, 20205:00 pm| 69 Comments

This post is in: Claire Updates, Fuck Cancer

Good afternoon everybody.

I just want to give you all a quick update on Claire, my niece.

She is finishing up her second big round of chemo.  It kicked her ass.  She is exhausted and not feeling too well and she has lost her appetite.  Right now, she is getting supportive care to get her stomach stabilized, nausea down and appetite up.  The docs are waiting until she is feeling a bit better for the tests and scans and assessments to figure out what they need to do next.

Her parents have moved into an apartment that is about 2 miles from the hospital.  They are extremely grateful to all you Jackals as what you have given them has been enough to take this problem off their worry list for a year.  I think the plan is for both parents to be based in Philadelphia while grandma and their younger daughter stay in New Jersey so that she can go to school on an as much as normal situation and then visit her parents on weekends.  That might be still up in the air.

We have been amazed at the community support (both here and elsewhere).  Claire has enough books, and art supplies to fit out several school libraries at the moment.  Her parents don’t have to worry about financial toxicity at this time.  My sister-in-law is a high school teacher. Her colleagues have donated enough personal days so that she does not need to worry about her job right now.  We are blown away.

Fuck cancer.
