A small thing but telling in terms of Trump’s handle on the Covid-19 pandemic — he vowed to vaccinate 200,000 people a day, which sounds like a large number but equals 73 million per year at which pace you need almost five years to vaccinate everyone.

The difficulty in scaling the nucleic acid vaccines does make me hope that someone is developing a live, attenuated COVID-19 vaccine. This would allow the inoculated to spread the vaccine to others in the community, as happened with the oral polio vaccine.

@Sloane Ranger: I’ve known some really right wing nurses.  One is a half sister who used to proclaim that “all gays should be lined up and shot”, and she wasn’t kidding.  Her second son is gay and out now, but still dealing with having been raised southern Baptist and sent to one of their colleges; he refers to himself as recovering from that religion.

    Yesterday’s numbers from the UK.

There were 7108 new cases nationwide. A bit lower than Tuesday but not by any statistically significant amount. Broken down by home nation,

    England – 5656 (up by 5 cases)

    Northern Ireland – 424 (up by 104)

    Scotland – 640 (down by 166)

    Wales – 388 (up by 22).

There were 71 new deaths, taking our total to 42,143. Of the deaths, 62 were in England,1 in Northern Ireland, 1 in Wales and, regrettably, 7 in Scotland. Deaths have increased significantly in recent days.

Tests – 232,212 tests were processed yesterday out of a capacity of 296,812.

Hospitalisations – There were 1883 people in hospital in England on 28 September, 59 in Northern Ireland, 122 in Scotland and 188 in Wales. All nations have seen increases. As of the 29th September, 259 people in England were on ventilators, 5 in Northern Ireland, 14 in Scotland and 34 in Wales.

In more general COVID news, more restrictions are being imposed on Liverpool and its environs due to a sharp rise in cases there. The Mayor of Middlesborough has complained about the restrictions in his town saying, “They are based on ignorance.” and urging the Government to consult with local government before they announce new restrictions. He has, however, said he will comply with the new rules.

In more positive news, a new study from Imperial College has said that the new restrictions may be working as the R number appears to have dropped since they were introduced.

Malaysia’s daily numbers. 260 new cases, the second-highest daily number, for a cumulative reported total of 11,484 cases. The highest daily number was 277 new cases, reported on 4th June.

All but one of the new cases are from local infection. 130 are Malaysians, 129 are non-Malaysians. 31 cases had recently travelled to Sabah from other states. Of the other new cases, 118 are in Sabah, comprising 74 from the Laut cluster, 10 from the Benteng Lahad Datu cluster, 10 from the Bangau-Bangau cluster including one non-Malaysian, 11 symptomatic persons, six persons screened in the community, one from the Bakau cluster, one non-Malaysian in the Joo Hwa cluster, one on the Sakong cluster, one screened on referral to hospital, one patient screened pre-surgery,one close contact of another case, and one non-Malaysian screened before starting a new job. 98 cases in Kedah, comprising 88 from the Tembok cluster including 35 non-Malaysians, five close contacts of other cases, three from the Bah Ketil cluster, and one symptomatic person. One close contact of another case in KL. Four in Selangor, comprising three from the Jalan Meru cluster and one symptomatic person. Four in Johor, all from the Bakawali cluster. Five in the administrative capital of Putrajaya, all from the Selasih cluster.

Four new clusters were identified: Bah Ketil on Langkawi island in Kedah; Joo Hwa in Tawau, Sabah; Selasih in Putrajaya; and Jalan Meru in Klang, Selangor.

The one imported case is a Malaysian returning from the UK.

47 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 10,014 patients recovered — 87.20% of the cumulative reported total. 1,334 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 20 are in ICU, three of them on respirators.

No new deaths were reported today, and the total stands at 136 deaths — 1.18% of the cumulative reported total, 1.34% of resolved cases.

Noting the sudden increase in new cases, DG of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at today’s media conference that it was up to Malaysians to flatten the curve. “But we’ve done it before, and we can do it again. We have the experience and knowledge,” he added.

In other news, Minister of Defence Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced a two-week ban on crossing district boundaries within the state of Sabah, effective midnight on Saturday.

Barbara Walsh at The Maine Monitor has  done three good stories on the swindling pastor (a rinky-dink charlatan imo) in Maine who’s founded  a school, seven churches and an “aviation ministry” in Maine.  He’s anti-mask and anti-distancing because he’s “standing against satan” and the  “socialist platform” that would curtail his demands for more cash  “vision of seeing the gospel brought to every village and town in the northeast and Canada all the way to Greenland” before  “it is eternally too late.”

urgent work to “see everyone in the Northeast come to Christ before it is eternally too late.”

After the wedding he performed was linked to outbreaks in a nursing home and a jail (cases in Maine:  now at least 180 with 8 deaths)  he began to preach outrageous manipulative stuff against the Maine CDC, Gov. Mills, and the biblical-type persecution he’s suffering.  (I listened to two deranged sermons before access closed on youtube.)    But the state has no power right now to force masks and distancing in his little empire.)   He’s hired a connected lawyer.  Probably afraid of losing the planes and big, newly built house his flock have been donating  to support.

I figured out why the Harvard map was showing the wrong data for our county; it was because the state Web site was way behind in being updated! When they updated the state site suddenly our deaths went from 19 to 56 on that map. Now we’re almost in a crisis status here, with the hospitals reaching their max on COVID patients. We are surrounded by counties that have no restrictions of any kind, because the state has nothing – no masks, no distancing, no capacity limits, no crowd size limits, nothing, so it’s no surprise that this is happening. It’s really Trumpy here, so it’s completely predictable.
