Notes from our own beloved microbiologist, LAMH:
Here's my thoughts on what's going on with Chump COVID testing, based on my own experience working in the lab daily where we did ALL in-house COVID testing and we also prepared specimens to be sent off to reference lab for sendout testing. (1/ 8)
— NB NOLA (@psddluva4evah) October 2, 2020
3 available test. 2 in current use, 1 validated for use as backup to when/if supplies for the other 2 were no longer available to us. Test 1 (AB) is a 10-15 min test (if you count tech prep of specimens). AB gives (+) result w/in 3 min, (-) results reported after 7+ min (2/ 8)
Test 2 (CP) is 50 min test, no matter (+) or (-). CP and AB have same basic PCR concept and target, except AB performs short cycles than CP. So in theory, a person w/active COVID19 will likely have (+) AB cause enough of target is available w/in those short cycles (3/8)
CP performs at least 3x the number of cycles as AB, so in theory a person without an active infection, but still w/present of COVID19 target DNA could replicate enough w/more cycles in the 50min CP test. (4/8)
Course if you have active COVID19, then CP will still be (+). AB had been known to have false (-) results in cases on non-active COVID19, so we considered CP more accurate as a way to confirm COVID19 “infection” even in asymptomatic patients. (5/8)
All of that to say, the AB “screen” would be done for someone who were exposed, but NOT symptomatic, and then sent off to our reference lab for CP (or equivalent testing) confirmation. (6/8)
All of this was done w/in 72hrs. I suspect the POTUS has a better chance for a quicker turnaround than some radom hospital patient. That’s why I say Chump’s already been tested and they already have results. (7/8)
That’s why they are self quarantining. (+) or (-) the Chump CDC recs if an true exposure has occurred that the individul self quarantines 14 days and then is retested to ensure a true result of being COVID free, and not just too early to tell.
(8/8)Again this is only based on my own experience performing COVID19 testing since the beginning of the pandemic in NOLA. The protocol may be a bit different in some places, but the testing manufacturers are pretty much the same used across the country. (fin/fin)

Early on in the pandemic, there was a BBC News story noting that citizens of Bangladeshi origin had a higher rate of hospitalizations than some other groups. In addition to social and economic factors, there might also be a genetic twist. A very preliminary study:
I wonder if Trump has Neanderthal DNA.

MJ & friends – so very concerned about the president*
If this leads to a turnaround on the election I would really wonder if it is true.

Except for Spain, I don’t think clear yet whether big resurgence in cases in W Europe will result in big resurgence in serious hospitalized cases and deaths. May be more due to good testing and outbreak control. Czech Republic is a serious resurgence that is stressing health care system and big 2nd wave of death. Several other countries doing worse than Czech, with 2nd waves as bad or worse than 1st, southward through E Europe and Balkans, but I don’t see those in the news.

Malaysia’s daily CoviD-19 numbers. 287 new cases were reported today — a new record, surpassing the 277 cases reported on 4th June. The cumulative reported total is up to 11,771 cases.
Today’s new cases are all from local infection. 20 of them have recently travelled to Sabah from other states. Of the remaining 267 cases, 129 are in Kedah. 113 cases are in Sabah. 18 cases are in Selangor. Seven cases are from other states. I will update later when the Health Ministry issues a complete breakdown.
81 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 10,095 patients recovered — 85.76% of the cumulative reported total. 1,540 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 22 are in ICU, four of them on respirators.
No new deaths were reported, and the total stands at 136 deaths — 1.16% of the cumulative reported total, 1.33% of resolved cases.

Just now talking about the risk to Biden. Everyone in the debate room was at risk. Everyone in the room should quarantine & get tested.
MJS
@JPL: While I don’t think this is going to happen, I find it more plausible than any “this is going to help Trump” takes which, frankly, remind me of “this is good news – for John McCain”. Trump’s supporters believe he is strong, and many also believe that the entire pandemic is a hoax. So, he just made the “hoaxers” look like fools, and he has previously mocked Biden for social distancing, which he will now have to do, making him look weak in the eyes of some of his supporters. If he gets actually sick, he’s done, because he will not get better before the election, given his age and the state of his physical condition. If he doesn’t get sick, he will have to wear a mask for the remainder of the campaign, or him not wearing a mask will be the story for the rest of the campaign. There is no silver lining for Trump in this. None.

Matt McIrvin
@JPL: I just don’t think the psychology of Trump is such that he would assent to that particular type of hoax. @Betty Cracker:
I think the important thing here is that you would even doubt the veracity of such a report. And you are not alone. On the WaPo website last night, there were numerous comments doubting the truth of the report.
The fact that Trump’s constant lying infects virtually everthing, everyday in this country is one of the most compelling reasons why he must go.

@jl: @WereBear: I do think it’s a lot of things. Africans are younger on average, they’re just doing better with this because they take pandemics seriously there, and they’re poorer so they don’t travel around a lot and create so many superspreading events.

Don’t suppose anyone’s really interested in the light of recent developments but here are yesterday’s numbers from the UK.
There were 6914 new cases, nearly 200 less than the day before, which was, in turn, fewer than the day before that. Hopefully this is the start of a downward trend. Fingers crossed.
Of the new cases,
5589 were in England (down by @50)
259 were in Northern Ireland (down by @160)
668 were in Scotland (up by @30)
398 were in Wales (up by @10).
Deaths – There were 59 new deaths. Down from Wednesday. 48 were in England; 2 in Northern Ireland; 3 in Scotland and 6 in Wales.
Testing – 255,915 tests were processed out of a capacity of 323,425. According to the BBC 1:500 people in England were infected with the virus in the week ending 24 September. This is an average with some areas having a higher incidence of the virus than others. The South West continues to be hardle affected at all.
Hospitalisations – Over 2000 people were in hospital as of Tuesday, 29th September. On Wednesday, 332 were in ventilators.

@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: I understood that all non sub-Saharan African populations had between 1 – 10% Neanderthal DNA.
Trump certainly LOOKS like he’s at the upper end of that percentage.

No matter how people feel about Trump (not a lotta love here amazingly) it is hard to deny that no one deserves to be infected more than Trump.
As I wrote in an earlier thread, in the US when presidents have become seriously ill, it is not unheard of for administration officials to lie to the public about the president’s health. Now, this being the most upright and honest administration ever, I’m sure we can expect nothing but the truth.

@What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?: Actually, outside of South Africa, which has a large population of people of European and Asian descent, Africa seems to have got off relatively lightly. Up to this breaking, they’ve been attributing it to not having the same access to drugs so having more experience in dealing with infectious diseases through basic hygiene measures.

This mass-murdering motherfucker won’t be getting my sympathy vote.
Maybe a sympathy card – Sorry you didn’t jump into an active volcano back in the 80s.

Maybe Joe and Mika could call up Dump and verbally slobber all over his orange cock to cheer everyone up and for old times sake.

He’ll NEVER quit – first, no “Get out of Jail Free” card 2) The statute of limitations will run out for most his crimes after his second term 3) The thugs have a massive operation already running to get him back by bypassing the vote (which they all know he will lose and by big numbers; this is something he knows and has been aiding in all his speeches.
