Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Not all heroes wear capes.

In my day, never was longer.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

You cannot shame the shameless.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

The willow is too close to the house.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Accountability, motherfuckers.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

I must say that I’m taking extreme pleasure in seeing the president of Notre Dame come down with Covid.

They were threatening to expel students who defied mask and social distancing rules to go to college parties.

He flies to Washington DC on the university’s dime to party and celebrate ramming through a right wing Catholic SCOTUS appointee and gets Covid.  For exactly the same kind of partying that they threatened to expel students for.

Apparently the campus newspaper is now calling for him to be fired.

    3 points.

    1) suspected timeline on Conway suggests she caught it Saturday, so she would not have been contagious during that exchange with Barr;

    2) It seems to have been memory-holed, but Conway was co-campaign manager with Bannon.  So 2 of Trump’s 6 campaign managers tested positive on the same day;

    3) There seem to be 3 candidates so far for patient zero.  Barrett had it at some undetermined point in the summer, which only ended 10 days ago.  McDaniel was tested because a colleague had it, not because of this event. Same for Jenkins of Notre Dame.

Donald Trump’s campaign manager has tested positive for Covid-19, dealing another blow to his reelection effort on a day that saw the president and the head of the Republican National Committee report contracting the disease as well.
Bill Stepien received his diagnosis Friday evening and was experiencing what one senior campaign official described as “mild flu-like symptoms.” People familiar with the situation said the 42-year-old Stepien plans to quarantine until he recovers.

There was discussion earlier about antibodies.  Head of UCSF has some helpful discussion:

15/ In fact, there’s no approved treatment for ambulatory patients at high risk of deterioration. But the early, not yet published, trials of monoclonal antibodies are promising, the treatment seems safe, and it makes sense to give it in this special case https://t.co/wXXGROkbCr— Bob Wachter (@Bob_Wachter) October 3, 2020

That tweet about “all those Democrats not getting this”. That’s really stunning and reflects a new twist of all-too-typical right-wing thinking about covid. Think it through: it seems that that guy honestly thinks that Dems somehow are able control the virus and give it to Trump etc. while being able to avoid getting it themselves. “Why?!”, he wonders. I can’t help but wonder if this guy is actually just one step away from realizing that covid is real, or is stepping even deeper into the looking glass.

    From an old Newsweek story…

Trump heavily touted hydroxychloroquine as a “game changer” during the early months of the pandemic. In May, he took a two-week course of the drug as a preventative measure, hoping it would prevent his infection after several White House staffers were diagnosed with the virus.

I wish the media pundits and everyone else understood the vocab of this virus. If you have the virus you are not in quarantine.  You are in isolation.

Trump has dumbed down the US media in regard to covid-19 compared to every other country in the world

If you have been in close contact with someone who has the virus, you put yourself into quarantine. If you have a test & do not have the results, you put yourself into quarantine.

@West of the Rockies: i’ve been living here in Utah for the past 40 years. That Mike Lee is a piece of shit, pardon my language. If you  live in Utah you will see these types. That guy is not good and he is a disgrace to all honest people.

“Melodia en La Menor: Canto de Octubre,” Astor PIazzolla. Philadelphia Sinfonia

October is early spring in Argentina, but this sounds like the composer might have had his NYC days in mind.

@Cermet: I agree with you.   If he were that ill, he would have been in the helicopter within minutes.    Having people watching for over a hour was a nice touch.   It brought back memories of watching a empty podium

Remember when a big fear (may still be) was that our enemies would attempt to ‘decapitate the government’ to gain major advantages in a confrontation?  tRump: “hold my beer…”
