The pandemic in the U.S. has had a free-rider problem, in which we have a bunch of people (me) who have given up seeing friends and family for months in an effort to help delay the pace of infection for other people who want to hug various senators and White House officials.

I assessed the risk of Trump having infected Biden at the debate, based on what we know about how SARS-CoV-2 spreads, and how long it takes to be infectious or develop symptoms. (Yes, Biden tested negative today but that means little this early.) https://t.co/9TzflosDOk

St. Joseph County in Indiana (home of both South Bend and Notre Dame) is almost out of ICU beds. Reported yesterday in local news that the county health department is “begging” people to continue to wear masks and social distance even though the idiot governor basically dropped all covid restrictions.
I would say I observe about 75-80% compliance with masks at the market, but the hardcore dumbshits are just going to have to catch it before they learn. Early voting here starts tomorrow and I’m ready!

OK, the English Government continue to find yet more positive tests that fell down behind the filing cabinet so our figures have almost doubled yet again. As of yesterday, the UK has a total of 22,961 “new” cases.
England – 21,309 (more than double the previous day)
Northern Ireland – 462 (down from 726 the day before)
Scotland – 758 (down by 6 from the day before)
Wales – 432 (down by 144 from the day before).
Pundits are pointing out what I said yesterday, which is that if the experts telling us the rate of increase had slowed were relying on official figures, they may be sadly mistaken.
BoJo has been doing the rounds saying that the revised figures are actually what the government thought all the time and that most of the “new” cases are in the north. This seems to be correct as
I’m not sure this is any great consolation to those in the North and may not even be true, I live in the Midlands and the rates for both my county and town have increased significantly since the “correction” was made.
Apparently, although the people who were tested positive were told they had the virus, the information was not passed to the Track and Trace system, so we all have to hope that the people who were sick told their friends/acquaintances and they, in their turn, were socially responsible enough to go and get their own tests.
Some of all this was outside the government’s control but it all adds into the narrative of a government that’s lost the plot. It’s no surprise that the latest opinion polls show Tories and Labour almost neck for neck. Unfortunately, it will still be several years before the next General Election.
Deaths – 33nationally. 32 in England and 1 in Northern Ireland.
Hospital admissions in England continue to slowly tick up.
Hey ho. What can’t be cured must be endured as my dear old Mum used to say.
Robert Sneddon
Scotland — about 700 new cases overnight, no deaths reported. I don’t know if Scotland’s cases reporting was much affected by the IT failure that lost a lot of cases temporarily over the weekend reported by the UK government.
The Scottish government is inching closer and closer to ordering a “circuit breaker”, a total lockdown of the whole of Scotland for two weeks with all shops, schools, non-essential businesses closed, pubs and hospitality putting up the shutters, no non-essential travel etc. This is basically what we went through UK-wide back in April and May. The thinking is that this circuit breaker would be enough to isolate a lot of asymptomatic cases and vastly reduce the spread of the disease which is now effectively out of control. I’d expect an announcement in the next couple of days if they’re going to do this.
Ohio Mom
Thinking about a second lockdown — I’m not expecting one any time soon, but I think I would hardly notice.
I already live a lockdown lifestyle. And this time around, I’m fully stocked with paper goods.
