Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

This will most likely be the final nail in Director Wray’s professional coffin running the FBI if the President is reelection, but this is a very good video that he released earlier today on election security.

The right to vote in a free and fair election is one of the foundations of American democracy. The leaders of the #FBI, @CISAgov, @NCSCgov, and @NSAgov want you to know how their organizations work together to protect your voice—no matter how you cast your vote. #Protect2020 pic.twitter.com/TaJBhWYwqL

What kind of subtweeting is that? Is there a word for that? (In English, i don’t care about the German mishmash, whatever it is)

Edit: whatever, good for them. Wray is a top person, we’ve been assured of that from on high.

Translation: “it’s over, trumpov”.  But good job, Deep State, for making a stand here.

On a side note, the debate commission or whatever has put in the plexiglass shields at all podiums for tomorrow night – Harris’, Pence’s, and the moderator’s.  So I guess the ball is in Pence’s court…will he boldly try to toss his shield aside?  Talk around it?  Also: who cares, these clowns are toast.

Has the production values of a 1970s community college information video. Probably had to write it, shoot it and get it out quick, on the down low. But that is nitpicking.

(CNN)The commission organizing general election debates will allow Mike Pence to participate without plexiglass barriers around him at Wednesday’s contest after the vice president’s team objected to their planned use, a member of the debate commission tells CNN. But Kamala Harris and the debate moderator will be allowed to erect barriers separating them from the vice president.

Also: who cares, these clowns are toast.

Trump may be toast, but he can still serve as an anchor to take down a few Senators with him. As far as I can tell, the Democrats can end up with 55 seats if they sweep all of the states which are currently toss-ups, including Kansas, Georgia and South Carolina. If Trump manages to cost his team a few percentage points across the board, people like John Cornyn could go down too.

Every Senate seat is important from here on out, even if a race looked hopeless a week ago. If Trump keeps up his current pace, he could even save Alabama for the Democrats. Trickster-god willing, he might even cost McConnell his job.

Is this new – I’m still reading posts from way back. Doubt I’ll ever catch up with the news today

The ousted director of the office involved in developing a coronavirus vaccine has now resigned from his post at the National Institutes of Health, charging that the Trump administration “ignores scientific expertise, overrules public health guidance and disrespects career scientists.”
Rick Bright, who filed an extensive whistleblower complaint this spring alleging that his early warnings about the coronavirus were ignored and that his caution at hydroxychloroquine led to his removal, is exiting the federal government altogether after being “sidelined” at NIH, his attorneys said in a pointed statement released Tuesday.
“Although not allowed at NIH to utilize his expertise in vaccines or therapeutics, Dr. Bright developed a plan to implement a robust national testing infrastructure, which emphasized the critical need to provide screening tests for asymptomatic individuals and to provide services to underserved populations disproportionately impacted by COVID-19,” Bright’s attorneys, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, said in a statement.
“NIH leadership declined to support Dr. Bright’s recommendations because of political considerations, plain and simple. After having his work suppressed for political reasons to the detriment of public health and safety, Dr. Bright was sidelined from doing any further work to combat this deadly virus,” they said.
“This was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. He can no longer countenance working for an administration that puts politics over science to the great detriment of the American people.”

@Scout211: WaPo’s rolling ‘live updates’ seem to be impossible to link to (at least, to link to just one item) but here’s what they said just a bit ago:

The Commission on Presidential Debates built a stage Tuesday for the vice-presidential debate in Salt Lake City with plexiglass barriers for both candidates, apparently overruling the objections of Vice President Pence, who had requested that no plexiglass dividers be placed on his side of the stage.

The added protections against the spread of the coronavirus had become a heated point of contention this week, as both campaigns jockey over the threat of covid-19 after President Trump and several campaign and White House advisers tested positive for the virus.

So, I guess we find out tomorrow?

For those of you looking for a creepy thriller movie for the holidays, a bad-ass friend of mine, Rachel, is in “Smiley Face Killers,” which is be available on streaming Dec. 8. Trailer here.

She appears briefly at the 1:15 mark, in a scene that she choreographed and rehearsed the other actors. Won her major points with the crew, because the shoot was running late and they only had time to do it in one take. As she tells it, she told the other actress, “Now I’m going to hit you in the head with a (prop) ax, and I need you not to move too much, otherwise I may hit you in the face and it’ll really hurt.”

    Also WaPo

The White House offered an informal nod to coronavirus best practices Tuesday, with mask-wearing prevalent after months of flouting public health recommendations and new internal guidelines for interacting with President Trump, who tested positive for the virus late last week.  But the biggest source of resistance appeared to be Trump himself, who, despite having just come home from a three-night hospitalization, was defiant — lobbying to return immediately to work in the Oval Office, discussing an address to the nation as early as Tuesday evening and clamoring to get back on the campaign trail in the coming days.

So…this is going to keep collapsing around his ears, then.  Good!

I have no doubt he thinks he was doing totes awesome until he got sideswiped by the ‘China virus’, did absolutely everything a human – nay, a SUPERhuman! – could do, and yet still was betrayed by all the people who wanted to um not die for the stock market.

    Well…yeah, pretty close!

Here’s hoping the Dems make some serious hay out of this in the next few years: “Why aren’t Republicans even bothering to put forth plans or compete for voters anymore?  Why is voter suppression their first, last, and only strategy?  Aren’t there conservative solutions to America’s problems?  Let’s hear ’em!”

Via the Post, Pence has caved on the whole Big Glass Wall question:

The Commission on Presidential Debates said Tuesday night that Vice President Pence had dropped his objections to a plexiglass barricade on his side of the stage for Wednesday’s debate after viewing the setup during a walk-through of the debate hall. The disclosure, by commission co-chair Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., came after a long day of posturing between the Trump and Biden campaigns over whether the barriers were needed to protect the participants from the coronavirus. Advisers to Pence maintained that there was no need for a barrier on his side of the stage.

But at that point the stage was already being built with two clear dividers, one next to each of the tables where the candidates will sit. Fahrenkopf said he had multiple talks with representatives of the Pence campaign after they saw the layout of the stage.

It looks as though the Biden/Palin debate in 2008 is the only V-P debate this century in which the candidates were NOT sitting.

I suspect it started because Dick Cheney couldn’t handle standing that long. And if it continued with the Caine/Pence debate, then it’s either Pence is also not up to it physically, or Tim Kaine is several inches taller and they didn’t like the optics. (Google indicates they’re the same height but the few images of them standing next to each other, Kaine looks noticeably taller.)

I can’t recall a similar strategy by Dems of calling out some right wing bete-noir and suggesting their opponent will forge some kind of unholy alliance with said villain and kill ALL the puppies if given the chance. I guess we can do that with Trump now, but people know who he is. If you were at a debate and started going off on how, if elected, your GOP opponent was going bring Louis Gohmert or Martha Blackburn-style evil to your district, everyone would look at each other and go like “WTF are they talking about?”

    @Jeffro:

No idea why this is not at the forefront for every election. The GOP admitted this year – they have nothing other than whatever trump says – and trump wouldn’t know a policy if it hit him in the face.

Always comes back to the media – they demand policy from the democratic party – so they can attack it.

McSally is throwing out some seriously weird shit/trumpov talking points, while Kelly is at least trying to bring it home to Arizona occasionally.

On the surface you’d think this is a R-leaning area of Phoenix/Scottsdale/Paradise Valley, but it’s surprisingly purple if you’re on the ground here. Schweikert has the stench of being in office far too long all over  him and two of our three state legislators are Team Blue; Marsh would make it three. We also elected a great Democrat, Deb Stark, to the Phoenix City Council. Her last opponent ran a highly partisan race and was crushed. Her current opponent, Nicole Garcia, is a kinder and gentler partisan hack.

If you have some money to spare for a political donation give it to Marsh. A little goes a long way in one of these races and tipping the AZ Senate to the Dems is huge for Arizona and beyond. Republic*nts control way too many legislatures.

@Suzanne: agreed. Arizona has been almost entirely run by Team Red for way too long (complete monopoly at the state level from 2009 to 2019) but I see that as a house built on sand. Phoenix itself (around 50%-60% of the metro area population) is blue, just look at who gets elected to the mayor’s office and city council. Including the incumbent Kate Gallego, the last FOUR Phoenix mayors have been Democrats. Kate is in her first partial term (won a special election to fill the remainder of Greg Stanton’s term); the other three served multiple terms I believe. Kate should cruise to victory in November.

Left-leaners keep moving here from California and colder climates. It’s going to tip decisively in the next two to four years to a solid purple state including the Legislature. Just wish I knew who the Dems have in mind for the governor’s office when Douchey is term-limited out. The last two candidates (David Garcia and Fred DuVal) SUCKED. Especially Garcia, it was like the Dems weren’t even trying very hard to win. Typical wonky Democrats who are great in office but suck at campaigning. Slimy, passive-aggressive, dishonest way to concede. “The lady is uncomfortable so I will gallantly do it for her sake … “

Yeah, and the recent update to the relevant CDC document makes them liars according to the US government:
Current CDC “How COVID Spreads” document:
There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6 feet away. These transmissions occurred within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation. Sometimes the infected person was breathing heavily, for example while singing or exercising.

    New rules, Mr. Pence.

@Suzanne: well based on my visits to Blog for Arizona, there’s more content and hope than I’ve seen in quite some time.  So I do think the tide is turning, slowly, but turning…  I kind of think that the Dem party in the State is being renovated while still being lived in, if you take my meaning…

@Yutsano: did you catch Yvette Wingett Sanchez practically calling her a liar? This was a GREAT panel. KJZZ’s Steve Goldstein twice refused to let McSally get away with not answering questions. I expect that tomorrow morning KJZZ will be inundated with angry messages of protest from right-wing flying monkeys who have never listened to the station.

McSally’s challenge to Kelly to three more debates had all the impact of a wet fart. What a way to end the debate.

I both miss AZ and am thrilled to be gone.

Mr. Suzanne and I are discussing snowbirding.

Years ago I visited a Peace Corps friend living and working in Phoenix.  It was February and she was rattling on about how green everything was that time of year and what a good time it was to visit.

Um…..  green?   I just flew here from Seattle.   Oh….you mean those little specks of green weeds scattered about in the desert?   OKAYYY..

@Bill Arnold: Um. The CDC just put out information that Covid is airborne. That means that it can linger in the air after/beyond the particulate cloud that one person can put out.

So while the 6′ rule keeps you from the most direct exposure, simply walking into a poorly ventilated room after someone with Covid was in there can transmit the virus. Less likely, but it’s a transmission vector.

@Calouste:  ‘ When Trump walked through the doors, Walter Reed had a stellar reputation. As he walks out 72 hours later, its reputation is in tatters. ‘

Trump has so much control over what the doctors can and cannot say, they are in a bind. The negotiations about what the docs would and would not say must have been insane. Probably took an hour to persuade Trump that the docs just couldn’t stand there and hilariously bald face lie about everything.

Sure. Just pointing out that the CDC put out new recommendations about reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and they are not the old recommendations. In particular they clearly call for masks, and for the importance of good ventilation in shared indoor spaces. Masks are now before hand washing in the list, which is a major change.
Republicans need to be called out for violation of these new guidelines.

@Martin: I think more accurate to say ‘can be airborne’ under in certain situations, that cannot be precisely defined, except ‘close or loud conversation, crowded and confined’ with poor ventilation implied, I guess.

I don’t know if they understand exactly when aerosols are formed, except for inside  infectious disease wards, which is a highly controlled environment compared to ordinary life.

It seems as likely as not to me that Pence might want to be seated as a sign of deference to the boss, especially when the boss might be extra worried about appearing weak. And, maybe there’s a kind of institutional deference as well, given the observation others have made that most recent VP debates have been seated.

Give ’em the axe, the axe, the axe!

(Note: It is more than a call for gratuitous—and well-deserved violence—the “trophy” for The Big Game, which dates back to 1892, is actually a lumberjack’s axe, which became famous after an infamous heist of the Axe by Cal students after it’s debut in 1899.)

@The Moar You Know: When Adam mentioned nuking Milwaukee, what flashed in my mind was an old, small, low-budget board game my good friend Neil (RIP) found many years ago at an SF convention: The Creature That Ate Sheboygan.** (No word if creature, as homage to The War of the Worlds, dies of indigestion.)

I recall the blurb went something like, “Stop it here or all Chicago will be at its mercy!” (For Trumpistas, ees feature, not boog!)

** Look, it’s still around! The game, I meant. (Sheboygan too, FWIW.)
