Watching the national news on NBC, not one of the cable networks, and good god if I were a Trump campaign staffer I would have flung myself off a building by now.
This cracked me up, though:

In a few days, more people in Trump’s orbit tested positive for coronavirus than in all of Taiwan

If you haven’t heard it, please listen to Joe’s speech at Gettysburg today. It will lighten your soul just a bit.

FIVE FEKKING MINUTES, Cole?!?…
JPL
@Anne Laurie: Love you and your posts, but Lester Holt is killing it tonight
Not sure how this works, but can you move it up after a hour?
TaMara (HFG)
@Anne Laurie: I feel ya! ?
Baud
@JPL:
Lester was awful yesterday. What’s he saying?

One of the reasons why I believe that Chump really does have da Rona is that TOOO many folks around and in direct contact with him are coming up positive.
It can’t ALL be Hope Hicks
Stephen Miller tests positive for COVID

Stephen Miller tests positive for COVID, per Ari Melber.
LuciaMia
Steve Miller has tested positive. Now just waiting for Barr and Ghouliani.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Anne Laurie:
@TaMara (HFG):
Seriously, how hard is it to check when other front pagers have put up posts?
Eljai
@dmsilev: Stephen Miller just tested positive so we can add another to the tally so far.

” if I were a Trump campaign staffer I would have flung myself off a building by now. ”
That the new Trump miracle cure? Good to know. Thnx.

@lamh36: And we only know about the ones that can’t hide for now. Trump does everything bigly. WH has been trying for a superspreader event for months, now they finally have one, strongly, very strongly.
JPL
@Baud: Facebook engineer who quit cuz of right wing new, replayed Haley Jackson’s interview with someone who lost their dad, and positive comments about Biden’s speech.

I got an earworm. Fortunately, it’s Richard and Linda Thompson.

As if it would be possible for the front pagers to not bigfoot each other in the height of presidential election season during a news cycle so dense that we’re almost at the point where light can’t escape from it. The intranecine bitching is entertaining, though. Pass the popcorn!
Poe Larity
I call shenanigans – Miller probably just felt left out and wanted his Corona Badge.
Miss Bianca
OK, that meme is fucking hilarious.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
They all live in an alternate universe and will jump on every thing you say. Exhibit A: Dan Crenshaw takes a dump on Jen Rubin. Various replies ask if SHE’S okay

Im a cartoonist. These past few days are playing havoc with me and my ilk. No sooner do I finish inking one cartoon then **Breaking News** and it already seems passe.

Okay, what does it say that Miller managed to stay Covid free when his wife was sick but not when Trump is sick? Huh? Answer me that!

Wow, turns out “stupid is contagious” is literally true, and not just great snark….

@lamh36: Grr…
(Just about) Everyone on Twitter is continuing to mix-up Quarantine (separation from others after being exposed) with Isolation (separation from others after being infected).
Miller tested positive and is in ISOLATION. [/zhena]
Medical-types must be pulling their hair out.
Cheers,

Gonna bring this up from AL’s poor stomped thread below –
Analyzing Trump’s actions a bit more seriously, he has always advocated walking away from negotiations to (in his view) gain leverage.
He once told Ambassador Richard Burt, an arms control negotiator, that the way to deal with the Russians (Soviets at that time, I think) was to arrive late, stride over to the table, thrust his finger into his counterpart’s chest, yell “Fuck you” and stomp out.
There is a parallel here, and he’s done it before. Many people on Twitter are saying they expect this to last a couple of days.
But Tom could be right too. Things are looking bad for the Republicans.
TaMara (HFG)
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Harder than you can imagine.
Gravenstone
@lamh36: She’s a garbage person too. I think she came from Pence’s office. Fuck her.
Ken
For this White House, it’s not implausible that claiming to have the virus is seen as a way to curry favor. Hell, it’s not implausible that Trump has been yelling at people who are still healthy – especially since that means they have a better immune system than his.
JPL
@LuciaMia: Just do variations of a dumpster fire.
dmsilev
So, about the Miller news, looking at the tweet from NBC again:
Emphasis added. This blows up the argument that Pence and his team have been making that he’s safe for the debate because testing.
Morzer
@Cheryl Rofer: I think the parallel here is his refusal to help the blue states because they aren’t his people. He’s just extending that to the American people as a whole because they keep ungratefully rejecting Daddy.
Gravenstone
@Cheryl Rofer: I’m picturing him following Trump’s advice. Which leads to the Russian negotiator snapping the offending finger like a twig before answering “no, fuck you!” In English.
RaflW
@Anne Laurie: He’s got nuttin’, and you have a carefully curated collection of items 5 minutes below.
Kinda sums up ‘Merica, don’t it?
Brachiator
Tough guy. From CNN
I wonder if Pence’s crew will avoid wearing masks?
These dopes are insistent on, well, being dopes.
LongHairedWeirdo
One thing that puzzled me about how Trump got Covid-19 is, he’s lazy, but he’s a *coward*. Since he wouldn’t have to do the work to protect him, I expected iron-clad protection.
Prediction: he probably started to refuse nasal swab tests, which I’d assume are the most reliable (because if something else was more reliable, they’d be dropped like any replaceable procedure that gets described as “poked a swab into my skull and started scraping my brain”). Downplaying the virus let his cowardice about discomfort overrule what should have been his far greater fear of catching it.
I could be wrong, but I think this does show good understanding of the kind of man Trump is, and it fits what we know, including the refusal to give a “last negative” test date.
Kent
@Cheryl Rofer: It’s their own fucking fault. The Senate outsourced their negotiations to Trump rather than doing it themselves. WTF did they expect?
lamh36
@Cheryl Rofer: oh I didn’t even see AL’s thread and I ususally check for the most ecent thread.
jl
@dmsilev: They thought tests every day or few meant you could blow off standard precautions
Edit: they must have drunk their own kool-aid to be so self-destructive and irresponsible. Or Trump had final say on everything, no matter how nuts.
And the standard precautions are not that big a deal for what they needed to get done.
Chetan Murthy
I just wanna say, his wife Katie Miller, she’s every bit as awful. But I sincerely hope that she will not come down with this. She’s pregnant, and we should all hope that the child is born hale. But otherwise, I’d be -so- rootin’ for her to be next.
Chetan Murthy
@TaMara (HFG): I second TaMara’s recommendation. It worked on me. If you don’t have 25min, start at the 18min mark. Really made me feel better today.
jl
@LongHairedWeirdo: I think Trump is too ignorant and dump to understand even the basics of how infectious disease control works. And he won’t listen. And he is a genius at self-delusion.
Steeplejack
@Cheryl Rofer:
Plan B: declare bankruptcy and walk away.
Not sure how that would work now. ?
dmsilev
@Brachiator: The “we don’t care about taking COVID precautions” approach seems to be working out real well for them. Hope Mike Pence enjoys getting treated like Typhoid Mary tomorrow.
MomSense
@Chetan Murthy:
She already had it. My mom
shared the news of Stephen Miller joining his wife testing positive and said it couldn’t happen to a nicer couple.
I feel exactly as much empathy for them as they exhibited towards the children they separated from their families at the border.
Brachiator
@Cheryl Rofer:
McConnell never wanted another stimulus and has always opposed Pelosi’s versions of a stimulus plan. But Trump wanted to at least throw a few dollars at citizens, so he is in effect walking away from his own plans. I don’t see how this helps him. He is truly stupid.
RaflW
@Brachiator:
I hope Kamala makes hay on that: Ladies and gentlemen you can see plainly on this stage tonight, as you have seen over the past week as so many around him have tested positive, that the Vice President — by the way the chair of the White House so-called task force — refuses to take even the trifling inconvenience of plexiglass to protect the people near him.
A thing every cashier in America is fine with. Something so minor but so useful, yet it is too much for Mike Pence. This is why he and his boss must be voted out.
jl
@dmsilev: Everyone else in the room in hazmat suits, bigly and strongly? They’ll need big name tags.

@Splitting Image: Great song!!! Now I’ve got it, too, but it’s a good earworm to have.
Ken
What I’d love to expect, but won’t happen, is for the Democrats to turn this around next year and tell the Senate Republicans that the Senate’s job is to approve President Biden’s appointments, his budget, and any bills that he and the House negotiate, without any hearings or debate.
EDIT: I’m not saying they should do it, just that they should tell the Republicans that’s what’s expected of them after the precedent set over the last four years.
LuciaMia
@Brachiator: Both Kamala and moderator using shields? Pence probably thinks he’ll look tough and brave. It’ll just make him look like a leper.
Jeffro
@RaflW: that would be fine. Ditching the whole thing and holding her own (safe) news conference would be even better.
Goes double for Uncle Joe. Nothing to gain here, and we must keep the two of them safe.
Sab
That caption with Barack And Harry is So Much Michelle and Meghan We Go High. I am in awe.
Ken
Maybe his test tomorrow will come back positive, so he can get the full experience.
Cheryl Rofer
And now he’s endorsing the deal he just torpedoed. Could be that the cycle I mentioned of coming back to the table was speeded up by the dex.

The FYNYT continues to have, at the top of their webpage, all of the folks who’ve tested positive in the WH–and that’s not including folks like the housekeeping staff. I can’t see how that makes them look like anything but monsters. But we knew that. And, at this point, it’s hard to see how at least a few people don’t get really sick.
Sab
@Barbara: False positive back in the day. Mike DeWine had one and retested.

@Another Scott:
Just not a distinction that anybody cares about.
And quarantine (such a pretty word) was originally coined to describe a practice of dealing with plagues. Forty days before passengers and crew of ships could go ashore during the time of the Black Death.

This is for you, John:
It’s really good! Trump won by 42 last time so he’s like barely ahead, comparing.

The timing of this outbreak, it’s commonly held association with Amy Covid’s nomination, and now the execrable Miller.
Kids in cages send their regards.
A nation turns its lonely eyes to Bill Barr. How you feelin’ there, PopNFresh?
Morzer
I am going to stick with my belief that Trump is bipolar, in a manic cycle probably triggered by his meds, and likely to engage in even more reckless behavior in the near future.
Kay
So that’s something to work with, I would think. Not sure what you do with it but …. :)
Morzer
@Kay: If it’s what you say it is, I love it. Mind you, I’d be even more gratified to see Mad Donny campaigning to save Coleistan from the blue wave….

@Barbara:
A large fraction (I forget what it is) of SARS-CoV-2 infected people do not end up spreading it to anyone. A small fraction spread it very well indeed., It is possible the D.J. Trump is in the second category. (Highly probably, IMO. Loud, in your face, never wears a mask to filter his exhalations.)
Calouste
@Kay: If the parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania that border West Virginia also have a 24 point swing, you could do a lot with that.
Calouste
@dmsilev: I think the reason the Dow only dropped 500 points is that people were pricing in that he would change his mind. Of course, if nothing happens, the stock market is going to slide all the way to Election Day.

@LongHairedWeirdo:
The ones I had done mid-August (NYState) were about 1.5 inch down each nostril, twice. (2 swabs each for rapidtest and PCR test.) I mentioned to the male nurse, and he joked (i hope!) that he missed the old swab technique because it made grown men cry. (True; it can cause tears.)

Damn. Back in my salad days (when I was a green leafy vegetable drizzled in oil and vinegar) I was plotting a two-part local pollitics novel, to run from Election Night 1972 through Nixon’s abdication to the 1974 election. Working section titles: I Can See Clearly Now and Bright Sunshiny Day.
