Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

In my day, never was longer.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Republicans in disarray!

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

The words do not have to be perfect.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

This really is a full service blog.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

I really should read my own blog.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

No Justins, No Peace

Let’s finish the job.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Re GOTV, I wonder if it is a good idea to send money to AZ (B +4.3 per 538) , FL (+ 4.2) and NC (+2.6) . And seem to trending to B. Those states have early in-person voting, and start counting mail votes early. If they go Biden, good chance winner is called election night, won’t need to wait for PA or WI.

@Old Dan and Little Ann: I was out on business yesterday, and some folks decided to talk about the election for a little bit. It’s not even about issues – the biggest thing that came up was Hunter Biden’s massive billion-dollar grift from China to start a hedge fund. Jesus, that was an eye-opener and a bit sad, because that is the stupidest thing to get hung up on.

Lawn sign report from walking the dog this evening. I was noticing the nice row of Biden and Biden-Harris signs lining both sides of one block. Took note of the one Republican lawn, but then realized that all the signs on that lawn were for state races and local candidates. No Trump sign.

The other Republican lawns still have their Trump-Pence signs and that one guy still has the giant Trump flag on his flagpole. But I take it as a good sign that at least one Republican household is ashamed to have a Trump sign out front.

Not that it means anything as WA is not remotely a swing state. But in my own suburban neighborhood I’ve seen maybe 6-8 Biden signs walking around and not one single Trump sign. That is in total contrast to 2016 when there were more Trump signs and this precinct went almost exactly 50/50 for Trump/Clinton.

Why are we even having debates in 2020? Voters have all the information they need. But let’s be honest, who changes their minds after a debate?

Biden shouldn’t put himself, his spouse and anyone else who’ll be forced to be that close to the super spreader. He should tell Trump and his campaign to fuck off.

Some did.   Trump’s numbers declined after his utterly unhinged performance in the first debate

But there’s no need to do it in-person during a pandemic.  All the cable news channels have talking heads debating against each other every single day from different locations with a moderator in a 3rd location.  It’s what they do most of the day.   They have the technology.   It is very perfected.  We don’t need to use zoom.

@lamh36: If I’m the Biden campaign I press back hard on Trump’s irresponsibiliity and Conley’s destroyed credibility. Stressing:

    a) Why should we believe Conley’s prediction when he won’t even tell us the date of Trump’s last negative test so we can evaluate the likelihood that Joe was exposed at the last debate. Conley has destroyed his credibility. That is his choice, but the price is that he is no longer to be regarded as trustworthy.

    b) Trumps behaviour was shockingly irresponsible in going to the debate without having been recently tested, even though that was a requirement, and having his audience refuse to wear masks, even though that was a requirement. There was genuine concern that Joe would have contracted the virus. There is no way that they are going to give Trump another chance to flout protocols and possibly infect Biden.

Trump has already had one chance to demonstrate his appalling irresponsibility. He’s not going to get another one. Virtual or nothing. Next time follow the rules

Seriously: Go on the attack about this. Trump’s actions threatened Biden’s life! Drive that point home. Who the hell is he to be making demands for in-person debates after that disgraceful irresponsibility.

At least 8,000 mink dead in Utah after contracting Covid-19

Utah ranchers have lost at least 8,000 mink to an outbreak of Covid-19 among the animals known for their silky, luxurious pelts.
The virus first appeared in the creatures in August, shortly after farmworkers fell ill in July, according to Dr. Dean Taylor, state veterinarian of Utah. Initial research shows the virus was transmitted from humans to animals, and so far has not seen any cases of the opposite.

Twitter seems to be excited about a short video of Trump that the White House released today.   He’s shown standing on the lawn in front of the White House, saying some blahblahblah.   There’s something weird-looking about the video.  The edges of his suit are very sharp, and the focus in the background is strange.  Some people are saying it’s green-screened.  I don’t know enough about video to have an informed opinion, but it definitely looks weird to me.

When the Trump administration suspended federal funding in 2019 for most new scientific research projects involving fetal tissue derived from abortions, officials argued that whatever the scientific benefits, there was a pressing moral imperative to find alternative research methods.

“Promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities of President Trump’s administration,” the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement released at the time.

Yet the treatment for Covid-19 received by Mr. Trump — a cocktail of monoclonal antibodies he described as a “cure” in a celebratory video posted on Twitter — was developed using human cells derived from a fetus aborted decades ago.

There are many, many, many complaints from swing state denizens that they are seeing nonstop Biden ads and no trump ads whatsoever.

There’s also “jaggies” around Trump’s silhouettes that are characteristic of green shots, which you don’t get with a shallow depth field.

Trump gets away with what he does under the cover of the benefit of the doubt. Always. It’s how he got to where he is.

He’s as malevolent and calculating as he is stupid.

I just got a robo call from Biden campaign in Missouri telling me they are handing out Biden/Harris signs (in my neck of the woods)!  They will be in Warsaw on Friday.  I haven’t seen any Biden signs around here, no surprise, but there isn’t a Biden campaign office here – but there is a Trump office, which I flip off every time I pass.  I think if Trump didn’t have an office here we wouldn’t have very many Trump signs.  My renter next door put a Trump sign in the yard.  Not happy about it, but I’m not going to forbid it.  He is on disability now (poor guy had some heart problems, and then found out he had skin cancer) and I guess he doesn’t think that Repubs would rip that money right out of his hands.   I get so tired of folks here (in my area) who bitch about others getting “handouts” while they work hard and never got any help from the govt; it’s all I can do to not remind them that the government paid for their babies’ births, their education, etc.  Now, I’ve been lucky that I never had to have food stamps or other kinds of relief, but many people I’ll never know paid taxes so I could have a K-12 education, and some scholarship and Pell Grant money for college, and I’m grateful for that.  So I don’t begrudge paying taxes for education (I don’t have children) and I don’t begrudge folks getting help when they need it, or children getting food and medical care.  I think we just don’t do enough to help others.

@raven: I’ve used tramadol on a cat and a dog (post surgery) and did not like it for them at all.  Made each of them agitated, anxious, or act like they’re seeing things.    Gabapentin is really different.  I’m not a vet but here’s my understanding.    I’ve  read that gabapentin shouldn’t be used together with an opioid (like tramadol).  My dog is taking lyrica which is a precursor to gabapentin, same action but much less is needed.  The vet recommended / prescribed either one;  says gabapentin has been more studied in dogs as to dosing.  Their action as I understand it is that they interrupt nerve signals to the brain, so works on nerve pain, on  epilepsy and on anxiety.  (Originally developed and still used to prevent seizures for epilepsy.  My partner has tried  both for stenosis;  he felt lyrica was preferable so we’re doing that.)  When the dose was too high, my dog was a bit out of it, but I reduced the dose and he’s like his normal self but w/o pain (and  w/o perhaps anxiety-caused panting).  I think his pain/nerve pain in his head must be pretty severe, but this is working well for him.  By well I mean he has good energy, appetite, loves meeting his human and dog friends, takes fairly long walks.

ETA: I’ve run into this problem photographing flowers, one part is in focus and even less than an inch away it’s a bit out of focus.  Since I’m shooting with a cropped sensor, I’m not shooting with that fast a lens.
