“On Thursday, in a conference call with a group of lobbyists, Mr. McConnell vented that the party’s Senate candidates are being financially overwhelmed because of small-dollar contributions to ActBlue, the online liberal fund-raising hub.” https://t.co/kEteg1UK8h

— Mara Gay (@MaraGay) October 9, 2020

IT’S WORKING, GUYS!

… New polls show Mr. Trump’s support is collapsing nationally, as he alienates women, seniors and suburbanites. He is trailing not just in must-win battlegrounds but according to private G.O.P. surveys, he is repelling independents to the point where Mr. Biden has drawn closer in solidly red states, including Montana, Kansas and Missouri, people briefed on the data said.

Nowhere has Mr. Trump harmed himself and his party more than across the Sun Belt, where the electoral coalition that secured a generation of Republican dominance is in danger of coming apart…

Mr. Biden is mounting an assertive campaign and facing rising pressure to do more in the historically Republican region. He is buttressed by a fund-raising gusher for Democratic candidates, overwhelming support from people of color and defections from the G.O.P. among college-educated whites in and around cities like Atlanta, Houston and Phoenix.

“Cities in states like Arizona and Texas are attracting young people, highly-educated people, and people of color — all groups that the national Republican Party has walked away from the last four years,” said the Oklahoma City mayor, David F. Holt, a Republican. “This losing demographic bet against big cities and their residents is putting Sun Belt states in play.”…

Furthermore:

Meanwhile, two sources close to Senate leadership said Trump is desperate, has zero leverage to push them to support a bill crafted by Pelosi & congressional Republicans aren’t inclined to wrap themselves any tighter to a sinking ship

    Serves these motherfuckers right.

In voting news, my wife got and mailed in her ballot (northern suburb of Cincinnati), while I plan to go in early and vote in person. This is for multiple reasons: 1. I don’t trust the mail and want to make sure my vote is counted by E-day and 2. My first presidential vote (became a citizen in 2017) and want to make DAMN sure that I do it in person and get that sticker.

MoscowMitch can’t tap Putin for any more money funneled through the NRA? How sad.

ActBlue has really changed the campaign fundraising equation for Democrats.

Democrats have moved away from needing large corporate donations. Hopefully, this will have an impact on how we pass legislation going forward.

The Senate GOP won’t get on board the stimulus deal because they live on another planet where there is no election going on and their constituents are not affected by the pandemic?

    @Felanius Kootea:

Two-thirds aren’t up for re-election this year. They are probably more worried about a crazier right-wing challenger getting traction in 2022 or 2024, as Republican groups mobilize Tea Party 2.0, beating them in primaries.

That’s some great party unity. Every Senator for themselves.

One of their posters is named DougJ, and he has simply violated all norms of Senatorial civility and comity. He uses lyrics from popular songs in order to entice the unwary to read his posts, and then the next thing they know, they are sending their Social Security checks off to the radical socialists who are running against our fine upstanding Republican men. And women. Like what’s her name from Maine, the frownie one, and the whacko from Arizona, and my good friend from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Miss Insider Trading.

@Felanius Kootea: They are assuming that Trump will lose the election. Then: a) if the Democrats win the Senate, they will need to pass a huge stimulus bill and the Republicans can demagogue on “deficit explosion”. b) The Republicans keep the Senate, in which case they block any form of stimulus to crash the economy to torpedo the Biden presidency.

Of course, if, God forbid, Trump remains president, they’ll pass a stimulus bill right away.

Since they only think about their narrow interests in gaining and keeping power, here’s no incentive to pass a stimulus bill now.

The framing of this reporting is bad. McConnell bears a lot of the responsibility for supercharging D campaign fundraising. Exhibit A: rushing to confirm Barrett after bottling up Garland. Any article that doesn’t highlight this has a huge hole in it.

Also, the writing is on the damned wall. Trump is going to lose. The only question is many other R electeds will go down along with him. Once again, I don’t think rushing the SC nom helps R’s in their elections—McConnell is in control of that. I’m pretty sure he is fine w/ the trade off of losing the Senate for a 30 year-long ultra-conservative SC Justice,

Finally, since Trump is toast, McConnell has no interest in passing a pandemic relief bill that might make life easier for a newly inaugurated Prez Biden. To say he’s been sidelined in the current negotiations is laughable. He’s been the single biggest asshole roadblock to this relief getting passed since Nancy Smash sent him a House version of this in mid-May. He could have joined in at any time since then. But honestly he doesn’t care about the American people, all he cares about is power.

Btw, if there are any KY jackals around Is like to know why McGrath hasn’t been shouting this from the rooftops the past 6 months. Booker would have if he’d won the primary.

If you are going to the Board of Elections in Norwood, I went yesterday mid-day, and except for a small bottleneck getting into the parking lot, it was fast and easy. There were plenty of check-in lines, voting booths and scanners.

Best news for you is that there is a pile of I Voted stickers by each scanner so if you want to sneak more than one, you can.

They’re tearing up the main road between my house and the town center to build a rotary nobody wants. So to get there this morning I used a back way that put me out on Shore Rd., which fronts the Atlantic, for about three miles. I saw five Biden-Harris signs and one Trump sign. None of the houses on that road go for less than $2 million.  I know it’s Massachusetts, but damn. In 2012 town went for Obama by eight votes, total. Went 60 percent plus for Clinton. Wonder what it’ll be this time.

Like with Trump’s tariffs and midwestern farmers, they’re literally asking workers and business owners in their states to let themselves get wiped out in order to stick it to large, urban blue states and their heavily unionized public workforces. @Matt McIrvin:  Not for a single “fuck.”

@germy:  And he’s already reversed himself since then.

President Donald Trump has signed off on a roughly $1.8 trillion stimulus offer to be presented to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to two people with knowledge of the decision, marking the highest topline dollar figure the administration has put on the table to this point.
The direct involvement of Trump himself and his willingness to put down an offer far above the preferences of congressional Republicans adds a dynamic new element to long-stalled negotiations. Trump, to this point, mostly relied on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to handle the details of the talks with Pelosi.
The $1.8 trillion figure is up from a $1.6 trillion offer from earlier this week, though it remains below the $2.2 trillion in the bill passed last week by House Democrats — and Pelosi has been unwilling to go below $2 trillion in negotiations up to this point, people familiar with the matter say.

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome and kind comments!

Like those who say they picked the wrong year to quit drinkin’, I didn’t pick the best time to become a citizen. There’s a complex calculation that went into this step, not the least of which is a familial attachment: my wife is natural born, and so is my son. I comment infrequently here, but I’ve written before about how I was a permanent resident for about 8 years before taking the pledge.

TL:DR, I didn’t want this asshole to suddenly change the laws and have me kicked out for no good reason. Never would I have ever considered the possibility of kids being separated from their families, but here we are…

Also, natural-born cussedness is a strong driving force. If these fuckers don’t like me or the color of my skin, they can fucking move. I ain’t going nowhere.

@Quinerly: What’s amazing is that even the “fuck” was a lie. It was in the context of “If you fuck with us, we’ll mess you up like no one ever has before”, like… creating a losing trade war with China, or giving up lots of free concessions to North Korea.

The whole thing is so sad.

Robert Caro will write 50 volumes, if he lives long enough.  He’ll probably spend 50 pages on Melania’s “I don’t care” jacket.  In his biography of Lyndon Johnson he spends IIRC 3 pages getting Lady Bird down a hallway at Parkland Hospital after John Kennedy was killed.

Back to the thought of what lost seniors for Trump: In addition to a year of precious life they’ll never get back, I mean.  USPS. Their mail. Not all of them are tech savvy and a lot get their rX by mail.  They’re mad and scared.

I really wonder what McConnell is going to do if Pelosi and Mnuchin reach a deal and Trump endorses it. Not passing that deal would be pretty bad for Republican incumbents.

C’mon GOP Senators get on the free money train (or better yet helicopter) and do something Americans want.

You may not win but at least you can go down having done something good for your state.

But no, they will go down elevating ACB to SCOTUS and laugh maniacally because she will loosen the chains on Frankstein’s monster Capitalism and lay the ground work for theocratic fascism. Hoo-Rah!

@Quinerly: I don’t think so. Biden had a steady lead over Dump since last year. Don’t forget how Dump won the electoral college by just a handful of votes in 3 states. It would almost certainly be closer, but I don’t think you can assume that if COVID hadn’t hit, Dump would be cruising to victory.

    @germy:

“I would like to see a bigger stimulus package frankly than either the Democrats or Republicans are offering.”

I think it was literally yesterday that Trump said he would never ever ever go higher than $1.6T, and the Democrats had irresponsibly asked for $2.4T.

Dude is just super, SUPER high right now. And panicking.

@Quinerly: I don’t think that’s true. I think he would have had an actual fight on his hands but would still have lost. Maybe by ~40 or so electoral votes.

Gotta remember that Biden’s has basically always been up 5% or so on Trump and go on from there.

Always remember that nothing is about what it says it is about. McConnell’s agita is not about getting less money. It is about the fact that the money doesn’t work the way it used to.

OK, someone explain this stuff to me.

The point of Pelosi negotiating directly with Mnuchin was that Mitch would go along with whatever deal they came up with, or at least accept most of it after getting some concessions.

But if Mitch isn’t inclined to let the Senate weigh in on their deal, and neither Trump nor Pelosi has any leverage to make him do so, then what’s the point of negotiating, other than perhaps a brief PR moment that will get lost in the usual avalanche of outrages?

    I’m mystified, I really am.
