Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

We will not go back.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Second rate reporter says what?

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

In after Baud. Damn.

Open Thread: Bixby is Pensive

Looks like we could use an afternoon open thread.

Got the notification my ballot was mailed and on its way. Soooo excited. Probably haven’t been this excited since 2008. Oh, we were so innocent then.

What’s everyone up to this afternoon?

Trump says he will not attend Biden’s Inauguration.  Does that mean that Trump now knows he is going to lose?

    That picture is fantastic.

I am carrying my Mail Ballot. I’ve never voted by mail before. I’ve been voting Early for the last 15 years.

Just a little anxiety about voting a new way.

My signature on file is only a couple of years old, so I’m not scared of that.

I always got such satisfaction in reviewing all my choices before printing out the ballot and submitting it during early voting.

Or under federal marshals’ care, en route to whatever jurisdiction where he first faces trial

Besides which:  Biden’s inauguration is likely to be small and mostly virtual.  We won’t be out of the COVID woods yet.

Then, because he’s been a constant jerk to everyone he perceives as beneath him (i.e. “everyone”) and because he’s not exactly a details person, he wakes up on the 20th and quickly discovers that being in Idaho doesn’t help much on that whole “hiding from extradition” thing.

Hurrah! In Amsterdam, I got my absentee ballot from Texas Tuesday, dropped it in the Consular drop box yesterday before noon. Absentee ballots apparently went out the 19th, but I didn’t expect to get one since the online registry didn’t list me after two attempts to register. I can only vote in federal races, being away more than five years, but that’s fine with me.

Lindsay Graham has refused to get a Covid test before the scheduled debate with Jaimie Harrison tonight. As a result, the debate has been canceled. That seems to be rewarding Graham for what is, considering his circumstances, a decision endangering Harrison and others. Graham got his butt kicked last time and would likely get it kicked again. A better solution would be to still have the debate and if Graham refused to conform to the debate’s requirements leave Harrison to answer questions unchallenged.

We had a “walking farmers market” in our neighborhood bordering City Park here in Denver.  It was even written up in the Post as a “thing” to do this weekend.  Weather is fantastic.  Everbody’s out and almost everybody’s wearing a mask.

Shortly we’re heading out for an afternoon of biking along the southern part of the Highline Canal.

This is why we moved back to my wife’s hometown from the first or second-reddest county in Misery.  Don’t miss that for a second.  Now if somebody would just buy the old B&B back there…

According to Kevin Drum, via the Washington Post, Trump has made a 1.88 Trilliion dollar stimulus proposal to Pelosi, who may be close to accepting.  The problem may be, according to Kevin, getting the deal through the Senate.  In some ways, the rest of the Republican party is even more fascist than our sitting president.

I finally remembered to look up the process for tracking my ballot, and it was confirmed received on September 30, the day after I dropped it off! I didn’t realize until this year that early voting starts in Virginia before almost anywhere else, so I’ve been greatly enjoying being in the spotlight for record turnout and lines.

(While I’m always an optimist, this is the first time we’ve had no-excuse early and mail voting, so turnout isn’t precisely comparable.)

    Has this shown up here?

The White House Presidential Personnel Office is considering asking nearly every political appointee in the Trump administration to write and tender provisional letters of resignation right before the election, according to two senior administration officials.

The personnel office would then decide which ones to accept and which to reject — giving President Donald Trump maximum flexibility in choosing his team in a possible second term.

You know how some things prompt enormous gales of laughter not because they’re funny –they might not be at all, objectively– but because of the release that comes from having the blatantly obvious made too plain to miss? Like Dave realizing at last that HAL needs his ass unhooked? I’m at that stage with our Presidential shitshow.

I just got up from a nap a little while ago. My “sleep hygiene” continues to be awful during the corona times. I have quit fighting it; I pretty much sleep when I can and accept the times when I can’t. Thank God for cable TV and the Internet.

I’m picking up my Trader Joe’s friend in about an hour. After five months of chauffeur duty five days a week, we’ve tapered off to this one pickup on Saturdays, when the person who usually gives her a ride home doesn’t work. She could take the Metro train—both of her stations have reopened—but it’s a nice way for us to taper off. We get a chance to talk a bit (masked, of course), and we get food from this or that restaurant to take home (separately). I’m thinking Lost Dog Café today—I’m due for one of their excellent pizzas—but B. has good suggestions, so I’ll see what she says.

I passed on my niece’s sixth birthday party at Sighthound Hall this afternoon. Not a huge number of people scheduled—fewer than 10, I think—but some of them are outside of my “bubble” and I just don’t trust the odds.

Quiet evening ahead, doing the usual and thinking about buying an Anolon hard-anodized wok skillet that showed up on the radar at a huge discount. Trying to decide if I really want it or I’m just hypnotized by the low price.

. . . Hmm, the list price at the Anolon site is much lower than at the site that was luring me in, so the discount price, while still tempting, is not that much of a steal. Dims my ardor a bit.

Yesterday housemate B asked me about it, and I asked him to do it for me. We filled out the declaration about who is delivering it and he took it off. He sent me a video of him putting it in. Fun.  NJ.com has an article, with plenty of embedded tweets, about Claudia Conway.  Because she and Kellyanne are Jersey girls, too.
How Claudia Conway, Kellyanne Conway’s teen daughter, became a celebrated voice of opposition

Last week, Claudia scooped her mother, a senior counselor to the president, on the news of Kellyanne’s own positive COVID-19 test. Claudia, who later tested positive for COVID-19 herself, had said she noticed her mother coughing in the house after Trump tested positive, and predicted Kellyanne’s test result. (In a comment on one of her TikTok videos, Claudia said her COVID-19 symptoms include a pounding headache, difficulty breathing and chills.)

In a later video that has since been deleted, Kellyanne can be seen admonishing Claudia.  “You’ve caused so much disruption,” she says in the video. “You lied about your f—ing mother, about COVID! About COVID!” she screams.
“It’s how I interpreted it,” Claudia says in reply.

“You’re taping me again?” says Kellyanne, ostensibly noticing Claudia’s phone.
….  Kellyanne grew up in Atco and the Conways have homes in Alpine and Ventnor City. She responded to the attention Claudia’s videos have gotten on Twitter early Tuesday.
“My daughter, Claudia, is beautiful & brilliant,” Kellyanne tweeted. “She has access to top doctors & health care & lives comfortably. Like all of you, she speculates on social media. Yet she’s 15. You are adults. We have COVID, but it’s clear who’s really sick.”

Yep, Kellyanne.  Uh huh.  You would die without the attention.  Also, the f-bomb seems to be bigly popular in the Trump sphere, no?

Republicans in the Senate are perturbed at Trump for going behind their backs to deal with Pelosi.

“There’s no appetite right now to spend the White House number or the House number,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) on the call. Meanwhile, Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), who chairs the Senate Republican Conference, said it would be seen as an “an enormous betrayal by our supporters” if Trump agrees to anything that expands Affordable Care Act programs to deliver relief — something that was done in the previous bipartisan round of stimulus, the CARES Act.

A betrayal of their supporters to expand healthcare during a pandemic? Who are their supporters — the Walking Dead? For better or worse, Trump is at least transactional. How do you deal with a Republican Senate bent on inflating the death toll for ideological reasons? And what kind of ideology calls for mass human sacrifice?

Roadie brother the younger came by to get some advice on a business proposal and our voter guide. Then we reminisced about Eddie Van Halen – he feels terrible for the crew who’ve been with the band forever and what a terrible time it is to look for jobs in the music industry. Then we talked about the election, the Senate and our tattered reputation.  Finally he showed us pictures of the property he owns that was destroyed in the Berry Creek fire above Lake Oroville. They believe the fire temps were around 1200°. We’re having pork chops and the last of the summer corn for dinner.

I’ve always been nervous about Trump resigning, and then Pence bringing back home a good number of republicans who are planning to vote Biden. However, in a scenario where Pence would preemptively pardon Trump before the election, I think the Biden republicans would be pretty disgusted and still vote Biden.

I can picture Trump resigning after the election though.

One thing for sure: let’s brace ourselves. The end of the Trump presidency will be every bit as chaotic, as abnormal, as awful as the last three and a half years.

Got my ballot Tuesday night, and took my husband’s and mine to the dropbox Wednesday morning. I was surprised at the number of people waiting to drop off ballots at 11:00 on a week day morning. I guess that’s a good sign.

My son and daughter-in-law who live with us are planning to vote in person, but my son turned around from his drive to work this afternoon because his shop is closed for at least a few days – someone tested positive. Now he has to wait to find out what the contact tracing protocol will be, and what his own risks are. Because of his position, he’s pretty sure he would have been at least peripherally exposed, depending on the timeline, so we’re all quarantining and wearing masks in the house.

And I don’t know what it will mean for their voting. If he isn’t infected (fingers crossed) it will have no effect. Early voting doesn’t even start until 10/26. But if he’s infected, he could  just becoming out of the contiguous stage when voting starts, if all goes well.

Anyway, good thoughts, please, for our family. It’s a little nerve-wracking.

Terrible news about your brother losing his house. That fire took out pretty much everything the Camp Fire missed two years ago. Encircled most of Lake Oroville, including the dam and spillway complex. You can see that the brush and trees that had survived the spillway failure and reconstruction were consumed by the fire in this live webcam view.

Had this fire occurred two years ago, it would have literally overrun the spillway reconstruction project site. As it was, construction had to be halted during the Camp Fire.

If he’s no longer president he’ll have zero pull with most anyone. So as he won’t be able or willing to cart off anything himself, has zero pull left and zero dollars to pay anyone, not that he would anyway, I don’t see him walking off with much of anything whatsoever.

Anyone else around here notice a lack of Rusky’s in the comments?

In 2016, one of the srv’s as I recall stunk to high heaven as a Ruskibot.

So far this year, I’m not seeing anything similar.

Am I delusional, missing the obvious, or is there something else going on?

So some real talk on World Mental Health Day.

I’m really struggling right now. Variety of things, including difficulty finding full-time work—and the possibility of having to take a lower position, with a definite pay cut—to find some (age discrimination is A Thing). Plus being really isolation after six-months of quarantine, and knowing any job I get will be remote for at least until mid-next year.

During the past few months I’ve been marginally functional, but I can feel myself starting to not even be able to do that—not great when it’s a time I really need to hustle. So I’m talking to my doctors about adjusting my meds upwards.

Anyway, this is a long way of saying: if you’re also struggling there’s no shame in trying anti-depression and/or anti-anxiety meds—upwards of a third of the country is on them right now. I look at it as the equivalent of the ER stabilizing a patient first, before treatment can begin. If you’re drowning, you can’t swim for shore if you’re underwater, you need to be able to be to stay on the surface first.

Might be worth a thread where people can share about how they’re doing.

There was an excellent ad for Biden during the Texas – OU game. I’m not sure if it was national or just local. Iraq vet talks about Biden’s success in getting armored vehicles that had better armor against IED’s. I don’t know how effective it will be, but I assume that Iraq vets haven’t forgotten Rumsfeld’s indifference to their well-being on this issue. It was a compelling ad.

    @Ken:

Part of the deal was for SDNY to drop any pending charges.

Why would he need to have SDNY to drop any charges, if he’s has a pardon? That dog won’t hunt.

That’s a little mistake, they mean the Manhattan DA Vance, who is going to bring state charges, unless he gets paid off again. He’s (Vance is) nominally a Democratic DA, but really, whoever has the most money to contribute to his pocket.

@KithKanan: Clearly what he wants is for NY State to drop pending charges, but if he doesn’t know what to ask for, fuck him with a rusty chainsaw.

I recall an old “Law & Order” episode in which a miscreant plea-bargained for all charges in “New York County” to be dropped. After the hearing where he pled guilty to other charges, cops arrested him as he walked out of the courtroom – & as he spluttered about their deal, the DA noted that the crimes had been committed in various parts of NYC – and “New York County” was only one of 5 counties within the city limits, so charges for anything done in Bronx, Queens, Kings (Brooklyn) or Richmond (Staten Island) Counties – some of which he had just confessed to as part of the plea bargain – were still active… :^D

@Sister Golden Bear: Depression is tough, and I don’t  know anyone who has put it behind them faster than one step at a time, and often it’s two steps forward one step back. But almost all paid work is needed and valuable, even if it doesn’t  pay well, and it usually brings contact with people even if done remotely. So work might make you happier even if you don’t use your highest skills, and it won’t prevent you from finding a better job. And I know regular exercize helps; very easy for me to say, a lot harder for you to do. But part of my heart goes out to anyone who is feeling depression hard, because I’ve been there. I hope things get brighter for you.
