Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

I was promised a recession.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Let there be snark.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The willow is too close to the house.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

ACB is an ideological hack.  Klobuchar and co. made that clear to all. The GOP will get their judge… At the cost of their integrity and soul.  I hope they choke on it.

Also, I am one of apparently 18 people who has never seen Goodfellas.

There is a category of women who keep their maiden name as a middle name and make a point of using it as a way of making some obscure political point.  It isn’t always the same point, though.  For some women (e.g. Hillary Rodham Clinton) it’s a way of showing they haven’t completely subsumed their identity into their husband’s.  For others (e.g. Ronna Romney McDaniel) it’s a way of highlighting that they’re from a political dynasty.  I’m not sure why Amy Covid Barret does it.

Does Rhode Island or Michigan not losing a Rep in reappointment matter to the GOP? And if aid to states is based on the census, do Republicans think that east Africans working in the massive chicken plant in Lexington, Nebraska got counted?

A REALLY boss move by a couple of GOP Senators would be to re-instate the SCOTUS filibuster right on the eve of a Democratic president.  Announce that they will only be willing to support a SCOTUS nominee if that nominee gets 60  votes, and that the quid pro quo will be an absolute guarantee of the same consideration during the next Congress.  It would make them absolute kingmakers during the next administration

I could see Romney joining in that sort of effort.  He doesn’t oppose Barrett or any other Trump nominee.  He just expects them to get bipartisan support.

It’s possible that what they’re after is undercounting immigrant-heavy areas in those diverse states.  Undercounting those areas would give them an advantage even if there’s some kind of impartial redistricting commission or other attempt to prevent gerrymandering, both at the congressional and state level.

    @RaflW:

The point is that they’re thinking in terms of within state distribution rather than between state distribution.  My understanding is that redistricting is unlikely to result in a big swing of Congressional districts between states.  Some big blue states might lose a district or two, and some red states might pick them up, but it’s at most a handful of seats.  It may be more valuable to them to optimize the distribution of districts within the states rather than between them.

That’s especially true because the census is used for more than just redistricting.  It also controls things like where federal money gets spent.  Shifting the apparent distribution of people within would help to divert money from the cities to rural areas, which they would very much like.

I’m not a galaxy-brain Republican, so I’m unclear on why undercounting in TX, AZ, FL and other diverse, immigrant containing states helps them.

Does Rhode Island or Michigan not losing a Rep in reappointment matter to the GOP? And if aid to states is based on the census, do Republicans think that east Africans working in the massive chicken plant in Lexington, Nebraska got counted?

It’s not about advantaging or disadvantaging TX vs OH or PA in the national count. It’s about advantaging the white GOP areas within each state at the state level so that they can maintain their grip on power within states like TX.  If they drastically undercount blue Houston then they might lose a Congressman (probably a blue one).  But they will also be better able to keep a tighter grip on the Texas legislature, which will control restricting and everything else within TX.  And that will better enable them to keep control of the TX Congressional delegation through partisan gerrymandering.

The TX GOP would rather have the current delegation of 36 Congressmen with 23 Republicans and 13 Democrats.  Than get an extra Congressman by finding more POC in Houston and Dallas and wind up with a delegation of 37 that is split 19 Dem and 18 GOP through loss of gerrymandering

Especially since that congressional seat they will lose will likely go to Ohio and stay red anyway.

Appreciate the responses. The in-state apportionment part makes sense, to the extent that any GOP anti-democratic maneuvering ‘makes sense.’

The part about reducing fed aid to cities does seem pennywise and pound foolish (again, it’s the GOP, so that’s standard operating procedure). Making blue cities in red states more broke doesn’t help the net finances of the state. If anything, it increases the risk of the cities being fiscal drags that burden the state.

    @debbie:

    The latest on this stunt.

But Secretary of State Padilla and Attorney General Becerra say the law is clear: the unofficial, unauthorized drop boxes in question violate state law and jeopardize the security of voters’ ballots. According to the state officials, the unofficial boxes that appeared over the weekend in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange Counties misled voters to believe they were official and secure boxes. Some were set up outside gas stations, party headquarters, and gun stores.

According to Becerra, the only valid drop boxes are secure receptacles established by local elections officials that also adhere to state security standards, and anyone returning a ballot on behalf of a voter must provide their name, signature and relation to the voter on the return ballot. Voters must also know who specifically is returning their ballot.

“Those ballot boxes would be completely legal if they instead just had a person there,” Mitchell said. “They could say ‘Tom is going to be at the gun shop all day long, you can turn your ballot into Tom,’ and that would be totally legal under California law.”

The California Republican Party has until Oct. 15 to reply to the cease and desist letter from the state, at which point Barajas said the party intends to push back against the state’s legal reasoning. Several state leaders expressed support for the removal of the boxes, including Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who on Tuesday tweeted that California will “do everything in our power to protect the sanctity of the vote.”
    https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article246424595.html#storylink=cpy

I know on my ballot envelope is a place for me to authorize somebody to take it in for me, but that would not accommodate putting it in a 3rd party’s box because the person has to be named. Don’t know if every CA county does the same.
