Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

I was promised a recession.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

This really is a full service blog.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Got mom and dad a new sign for their yard, and mom sent a picture to the family text as soon as she saw it:

The Radicalization of My Parents Continues

Dad loves it.

I tell you what, Trump is a uniter. A few years ago my parents thought I was a wild hair on fire liberal, and today when I talked to my mom the first thing out of her mouth before hello was “that woman is awful.” She was talking about Amy Comey Barrett.

” the first thing out of her mouth before hello was “that woman is awful.” She was talking about Amy Comey Barrett. ”

So, HRC is totally forgotten? You’d think people would at least keep their fond memories alive.

Oh wait, that is all the Trumpster base remembers, including every obscure, occult, and opaque code word. I wonder how many others can figure out what they are even talking about.

BTW, Trump has acted really  weird, even for him, over last day at his rallies. Acting like he’s drunk dancing around the stage. Offering to kiss some dudes, but maybe that his idea of outreach outside the base, I dunno. Not sure what to make of it. Maybe he has reached the acceptance stage, and is just having a blast at his last rallies? Not that he won’t slip back into the anger, resentment, revenge, apeshit, stages again. Trump handles things differently than most of us.

I knew Amy Covid would be awful, but to not even agree that Trump can’t delay the election? To not even agree that the law clearly states when the election is to occur and that that is set by Congress?

    And we merrily roll along.

As noted downstairs, Trump has officially Jeb Bushed himself:

Suburban women, they should like me more than anybody here tonight because I ended deregulation that destroyed your neighborhood. I ended the regulation that brought crime to the suburbs,” Trump said, referring to an Obama-era anti-segregation rule that his administration ended.

“So can I ask you to do me a favor? Suburban women, will you please like me? I saved your d— neighborhood,” the president said.

Trump said he’s heard that suburban women don’t like how he talks, but that he doesn’t have time to be nice.

“You know, I can do it, but I got to go quickly. We don’t have time,” Trump said. “They want me to be politically correct.”

@Goku (Amerikan Baka): Someone should asked her for the reason for her outrageous and disqualifying answer, and if that is the reason, then she would stand down from the nomination, let alone promise to recuse herself.

The whole thing is unbelievably crooked. I’d like the conservatives to be impeached convicted and removed from the court. If the Democrats win, I’ll look up the rules for ejecting corrupt GOP Senators and sending them back home. I know it won’t happen, though. But I think that is what should happen in a just world.

Edit: If she is appointed, and Trump tries to fiddle with the election because, say, his daffy plan comes crashing down because it is raining on Nov 3, we’ll have to hope she calls McConnell rather than Trump for instructions. McConnell more likely to evaluate and look for long term ROI. If Trump has sunk the GOP, that will figure in McC’s calculations, maybe better to be rid of him.

But, if he is really over his infection, he shouldn’t be taking them anymore. I doubt he’s still contagious, but for his own welfare, as if Trump had the foggiest rational notion about what that might be.

From what I’ve read, if he is still on the ‘roids, that means that even though the infectious stage is over, his immune system is still acting up in a way that could damage him severely.

An important question: is Trump off the ‘roids? And why not if he is still on them? And, any evidence that they have affected his mental status? A reporter ask that yet?

@Honus: that’s pre-ww2. Has nothing to do with Nazis at all. They’re all over a lot of public buildings that were built before 1940. Was a good luck symbol stolen from native Americans (here) who used it for thousands of years, and goes back 11000 years in Sanskrit.

OK, now I’ve got to straighten you out. I was in the military during the Vietnam war. There was NO ANTI-GI movement during the war. The Anti-WAR movement wanted to save the lives of the men who were drafted into the SE Asia Wars. No one got spit on.

People in the military were by and large treated with the same respect they are today with the exception of the rote saying of “Thank you for your service!” which I for one can live without. I don’t know where you picked up on this bull, but  you need to study on it some. No truth in it. None!

Nice sign, and great story. Thanks JC.

I haven’t watched the hearings or read all of the play-by-play threads yet. Did anyone ask her something like:

“Ms. Barrett – Why do you think you were nominated to be an Associate Justice of the SCOTUS by President* Trump? Please tell us why you think you selected, given your lack of experience, …” etc. Make her talk and tell us how brilliant she is and why she should go to the front of the line as the next Associate Justice.

It’s a mystery!!1 Since she’s so eminently fair and doesn’t have any opinions of her own but only follows the law. Why she could be a Liberal Democrat for all we know, since she hasn’t expressed any opinions on anything at all!!11

    Grr…

The law is complex, society is complex, and judges don’t just look at the law. They look at evidence and determine the facts. They look at precedents. They look at the impact of their rulings on society. Great Justices are people who apply the law in the interests of greater justice while also considering everything else.

    GrrRrrrr.

My mom was a life long Republican. But on her deathbed, on O2 for her COPD caused by her addiction to Pall Malls, she told me that she had quit voting for Republicans, because of their opposition to reproductive rights, abortion in particular.

She also asked me not to tell Dad, because it would just upset him, so I never did tell anyone but Wife, who was relieved and impressed to learn that. They are all gone now, so  it no longer matters.

I suspect in the long ago when she was a college student, a close friend, or perhaps a cousin, had an illegal abortion and died from it. She was very strong in that opinion. She died a few months later, years longer than the doctors expected her to last.

@JoyceH: I listened to some of the interview, so I hope I’m not misrepresenting the Speaker, but I felt she could have shut Blitzer down more effectively by saying that the $1.8T was money going to R interests and donors (and realtors like Kushners), and the $2.2T was money going to the American people who needed it the most. Perhaps she could have given a couple of examples of the differences in the programs, such as SNAP. I read some of the (awful) comments, and people think the bills are the same except for one being smaller than the other. They are not the same. The money is not going to the same places, that’s the point. That really is the point. I didn’t get that from Pelosi’s statements. But just telling people, in this toxic environment to trust the Chairs is not effective. I trust the Dem Chairs, but lots of less informed people will not. If the House accepted the $1.8T bill, the money will not go to the people who need it the most. That is why Speaker Pelosi won’t just roll over and accept it. Thank goodness.

@J R in WV: you are incorrect. People are varied and do many things at the same time. There were individual acts by rude people to service men. They got exaggerated over time to make them seem common. No large group is perfect in every member. Of course there were some acts of disrespect and claiming otherwise is unbelievable.

specifically, my uncle the Vietnam vet once encountered a bank teller who called him a baby killer to his face. My aunt also witnessed it. One example in his entire life, only brought up when asked. He said it was the only time. I do think it probably made a bad impression on him about the anti war movement, however he voted Kerry because he thought Bush was screwing up Iraq, and usually he voted NRA. Hates trump.

That ended in mid-1973 as Tricky Dick’s anus horribilus**  began.  We’d gather around the TV to watch the nightly news & every time Milhous’s mug flashed onto the screen we would rise as one shaking a fist & shouting They’re gonna get you, you sonofabitch!
