Global coronavirus cases surpass the 40 million milestone https://t.co/gQf0OqqtrE pic.twitter.com/mhBSaJWurB
— Reuters (@Reuters) October 19, 2020
The Reuters tally is based on official reporting by individual countries. Experts believe the true numbers of both cases and deaths are likely much higher, given deficiencies in testing and potential under-reporting by some countries.
The Reuters data shows the pace of the pandemic continues to pick up. It took just 32 days to go from 30 million global cases to 40 million, compared with the 38 days it took to get from 20 to 30 million, the 44 days between 10 and 20 million, and the three months it took to reach 10 million cases from when the first cases were reported in Wuhan, China, in early January.
Record one-day increases in new infections were seen at the end of last week, with global coronavirus cases rising above 400,000 for the first time.
There were an average of around 347,000 cases each day over the past week, compared with 292,000 in the first week of October…

Today, Hong Kong reported 15 new cases, 1 from local transmission, with source of transmission identified.

California and the OC are doing pretty well compared to most of the rest of the country. We have benchmark numbers set for four tiers of opening and each county moves from tier to tier independently of the rest of the state. We in the OC only had 84 new cases yesterday; it’s been many weeks since we had only a 2 digit number. No deaths today. Still haven’t gotten all the nursing homes and assisted living places clean.
p.a.
If/when Biden becomes pres, he’ll have to tie covid actions to monetary aid to even have a shot at getting red state governors to go along. I wish “No play? No pay” was an easy option, but there are rational, decent people in those states as well as there are tRumpturds, and they shouldn’t be abandoned.

Misery currently has one county with a test positivity rate over 60% (Holt)
5 at 50-59.9 %.
14 at 40-49.9 % (Cole w/ the state capital at 40.5%)
25 at 30-39.9 %
41 at 20-29.9 % (Washington at 28.3 %)
29 at 10-19.9 % (KC at 16.1 %)
3 at 5-9.9 % (STL city at 9.9 %)
1 at 0.0 % (Mercer)
And our do nothing Governor is at 100%

Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 numbers. DG of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reports 865 new cases today for a cumulative reported total of 21,363 cases. He also reports three new deaths for a total of 190 deaths — 0.89% of the cumulative reported total, 1.36% of resolved cases.
858 new cases are local infections, including 91 non-Malaysians. Sabah still has the most cases, 643, as the Health Ministry continues catching up with a testing backlog: 183 in existing clusters, 343 close-contact screenings, and 117 other Covid-19 screenings. Selangor has 101 cases: 71 in existing clusters, 19 close-contact screenings, two back from high-risk zones in Sabah, one in the new Hentian cluster, and eight other Covid-19 screenings.
Labuan has 34 cases: 33 in existing clusters, one back from a high-risk zone in Sabah. Penang has 26 cases: 24 in existing clusters, and one close-contact screening. Perak has 18 cases: nine in existing clusters, two close-contact screenings, seven other Covid-19 screenings. Melaka has 16 cases: 11 in the new Bukit cluster, three screenings at an immigration detention depot, one close-contact screening, and one symptomatic person.
KL has six cases: four close-contact screenings, one from an existing cluster, and one back from a high-risk zone in Sabah. Negeri Sembilan has four cases: two in existing clusters, and two close-contact screenings. Kedah has three cases, all in existing clusters. Putrajaya also has three cases, all in existing clusters. Johore has two cases: one in an existing cluster, and one back from a high-risk zone in Sabah. Pahang has one case, a symptomatic person. And Terengganu has one case in an existing cluster.
Seven cases are imported, comprising three Malaysians and four non-Malaysians. Four are arrivals from China, and there is one arrival each from Australia, the US, and Qatar.
455 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 13,717 patients recovered — 64.21% of the cumulative reported total. 7,456 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 99 are in ICU, 32 of them on respirators.
The three deaths, all reported in Sabah, are an 85-year-old man, a 52-year-old man with diabetes, and a 70-year-old woman.
Dr Noor Hisham says the Health Ministry’s current goal is to bring the nationwide Rt number down from about 1.5 now — it was about 2.2 at the start of the current third wave — to below 1 in the next few weeks. The current Rt of 1.5 is not good enough, he warns; if it stays there, Malaysia could be recording 1,000 cases or more daily by the end of October.

A few months ago, I found myself somewhat sheepishly admitting that despite being a Republican, my governor was doing a good job with Covid. I wanted to be fair, even if it went against my entire self-concept and worldview.
I shouldn’t have worried, he’s stepped back and now Ohio’s numbers are skyrocketing.

Yesterday in the UK, we had a total of 16,982 new cases reported. This is an increase of about 800 from the day before. Broken down by home nation the figures are,
England – 14,704 (up by just over 1000)
Northern Ireland – 1012 (down by 19)
Scotland – 316 (down by just under 1000)
Wales – 950 (up by about 300).
The latest R number is 1.3 to 1.5 with a daily growth rate of 4% to 7%.
Deaths – There were 67 new deaths, 59 in England, 5 in Northern Ireland, 3 in Wales and none in Scotland. These figures are lower than what we have recently been seeing could be a delay in reporting or an anomaly.
Testing – 304,315 tests were conducted out of a capacity of 323,006.
Hospitalisations – There were 5608 people in hospital on 15 October and 592 people on ventilators on 16th October. Both are trending slowly but inexorably upwards.
General – It’s being reported that Boris has agreed to give Manchester £100 million to get Andy Burnham to agree to the city going into Tier 3 and it looks increasingly likely that the Welsh cabinet will agree to Wales having a two week, short, sharp lockdown due to the situation there. There is a lot of debate about whether these sort of short lockdowns have any effect.
Robert Sneddon
@Sloane Ranger:
Over the weekend the Scottish testing labs got overloaded and test swabs were sent off to other labs in England slowing the results hence the dramatic but false fall in numbers announced. It seems to be a problem with “lighthouse” laboratories which are financed and run by the UK government to deal with symptomatic cases, contacts found by tracing etc. rather than the testing labs organised and run by NHS Scotland which deal with repeated testing of essential health workers, residents of care homes etc.
The First Minister announced today’s number of confirmed cases in Scotland was 993 but that includes some of the cases missed off from yesterday’s total, with a test positivity rate of 6.4%. It’s been about a week since Scotland imposed new limited lockdown measures and, averaging the last two days it looks (hopefully) that the case numbers are starting to to fall from last week’s peak of 1600 or so.

Trump has been bad, but we have had really bad outcomes from the pandemic for reasons that transcend Trump. One of the top reasons is that our labor laws are so primitive. Number one. No paid sick leave mandated by the federal government. This means that sick people routinely all over the country go to work. Particularly in the service industries. Service. Where they spread whatever illness they have to as many people as possible. No other industrial country is this fucked up. If the cable nets spent half as much time harping about this as they do about personality politics maybe we could at least change this one god damn thing?
