Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Books are my comfort food!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

White supremacy is terrorism.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

The Grand Farewell Tour is… not as heartening as Lord Smallgloves and his minions expected:

In Erie, President Trump said that before the pandemic he was coasting to re-election and did not need to campaign. “There was no way I was coming to Erie. To be honest I didn’t have to. Then we got hit by the plague and we had to go back to work. Hello Erie!”

— Steve Holland (@steveholland1) October 21, 2020

No complacency before November 3rd, etc etc, but this is *not* a man who believes he’s gonna win. So, if nothing else, you can take consolation in the fact that we’re making him miserable. More miserable.

"People of tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots,” Trump says in campaign call that has become a longish rant in which he is trying to deny he is at risk of losing this election.

I’m like the prisoner marking the days off on the wall.  At this point, every day that passes without a dramatic change in the race is a good one.  Millions more people voted today.  The race is more solidified than it was a day ago.   Day by day we get closer and closer.  But I can’t hardly take it anymore.

I guess since he couldn’t control or sabotage the process, he walked off… again violating the agreement that he and Pence would also be interviewed together.

@Kent: I’m stressed out and exhausted.  And insomnia makes it all so much worse. The election will only cure some of my woes.  If I could vote my way out of the fact that my eldest is depressed and failing his senior year of high school, I would.  I just wrote a diatribe email to his teachers who pretty much stopped teaching the online students (which seems to be just my kid now) once everyone else went back on campus.  Of course both the elementary school and the high school have already had their first positives on campus, proving me right to keep both my kids online, but the complete lack of instruction and structure is pissing me off.  At least my 10 year old is getting face time with his teachers but he ends most days by 1 or 2 and then he’s in my hair while I’m trying to work.  And I should be grateful that I have a job where I can work from home but the 10-12 hour days are wearing thin, but my industry is booming right now. And I’m so frigging tired of being in my house.  I’ve been here since March.  I’d give an appendage to eat out at a restaurant.   I’m just done with 2020, so frigging done.

@West of the Rockies: I watched them in Virginia. The mainstream, Chamber of Commerce types running the republican party welcomed the tea party movement as new blood. But then the tea party types knocked out Congressman Eric Cantor in a primary for the Va. 7th in 2014. The year before they demanded and got a state convention, so they could get Ken Cucchinelli nominated for governor. His rival, Lieutenant Gov. Bill Bolling, had won eight straight elections for various offices, but he knew he couldn’t compete in a caucus and convention system, and did not even try. In 2016 two fairly young republican congressmen-Rigell, VA2nd, and Hurt, VA5th retired. I believe they did so because they knew they would have to run the caucus convention gauntlet. They were both wealthy businessmen, too proud to kiss tea party ass.  The tea party people now call themselves “constitutional conservatives,” and in alliance with evangelical dominionists successfully challenged my republican VA 5th Congressman, again using the caucus/convention route. The Republican nominee calls himself “a Biblical and Constitutional Conservative.”    The VA 7th and 2nd are now held by Democrats, and it looks like the 5th will be too. The republican insurgents that came out of the tea party were not strong enough to wreck the Commonwealth, but they’ve just about wrecked the Virginia republican party

@Achrachno: Well, it took two cycles, 2017 and 2019, but Virginia Democrats now control the General Assembly, having beaten the republicans on a district map the republicans themselves gerrymandered. Demographic changes were a factor, but the lurch to the right by the republicans also played a role.

That’s what happened here in CA. Republicans lurched right in response to demographic change (they hate the sound of Spanish!) and the people did not follow them. This state wasn’t always so bright cheery blue.

@Geminid: This year the Virginia legislature passed some good gun safety laws, and prohibited guns on the Capitol grounds. And in 2017, Governor Northam was able to push through Medicaid expansion that has extended coverage to 400,000 Virginians.       Northam did this with help from Republicans- 10 Delegates and three Senators. Three of those Delegates were successfully primaried from the right last year. And Senator Jill Vogel (Culpeper) would have been an obvious choice to replace 5th District Congressman Scott Garrett when he abruptly retired in 2018, but she did not even try- I suspect because she knew her vote for “Obamacare” was anathema to the cranks that dominate the republican party in the 5th.

My stepson is extremely extroverted. The covid resrtrictions would have destroyed him. He managed to almost destroy himself with drugs, but he got over that eventually. Years ago pre-covid.

My oldest granddaughtwr is introverted and didn’t want to go to college anyway because people. So lockdown has been a godsend to her. But her tiny autistic sister wants to go to school.

I cannot imagine what it is like to push a teen through high school in these times. Every educational structure we have is contra-intuitive to life in lockdown.

I suspected that, once he realised the drugs made him feel better than he had in years, he wouldn’t let them wean him off. And his doctors are either too spineless to insist or can’t because he’s the CinC.

Nope. I want to see Trump defeated in November. I want to rub his nose in the stink of failure. I don’t care how miserable he feels.

@Sloane Ranger: Doctors too spineless. To treat Trump you have to sign an NDA. As Federal employees that’ s unethical and illegal.  Also too not necessary since ordinary doctor ethics accompish same thing.

Doctors willing to sign NDA are already  ethically suspect. Care they provide is also probably over ethical lines. They just want to be on board for the attention, so do whatever he wants. Trump usual low quality hires.

Anyway, if you mailed or dropped off your New Jersey ballot, you can go to

and if not ‘Accepted’ by Election Day, the polling place where you can go to fill out a Provisional Ballot (Mine be home of Devils – the Prudential Center ;-) )

A sign of it all is that our current Republican candidate in VA5 is simply a horrible choice. I see maybe 1 ad “for” him to every 30 for Webb, the Democrat. (Meaning they are simply attack ads). Goode is like the penguin pushed off the ice floe to the seals… and still with the crazy way the district is mapped the race will probably be close.

Hopefully the gerrymandering can be reduced if everyone votes “yes” on the Question 1 for redistricting.

@BretH: Bob Good’s job at Liberty U. was as a fundraiser for the athletic department. But he is getting creamed in fundraising by Democrat Cameron Webb.      The Va. 5th is shaped like an inverted funnel, with the base along the North Carolina line, and the tip being Fauqier County. Just ridiculous. It will be drawn more compactly for 2022, whether by a commission or by the Democrats in the General Assembly. Polling indicates that Virginians will in fact vote for the independent commission. I have mixed feelings about it, but I’ll probably vote for the Amendment.

    @Ms. Deranged in AZ:

I’m stressed out and exhausted.

PS:. If any of you say anything condescending to me, I swear by holy baby jeebus on a cracker, there will be blood.

I promise not to be condescending! I’m sorry your older kid isn’t receiving the support he deserves from his school and teachers. Perhaps older kid should just do a GED after dropping out of school? I think most colleges and universities will understand that lots of kids were deserted by their secondary education folks.

I too have had insomnia issues. My family doc prescribed the appropriate medications, and they help.

Last night I dreamed I was somehow connected to a Mexican extended family starting up a Mexican restaurant by first founding a farm to grow Mexican fruits and vegetables. I remember telling the guy in charge of teaching me that I spent 6 months in a Navy Galley doing vegetable prep work and cooking lunches for hundreds of hungry sailors. He wasn’t impressed, which was appropriate.

I have high hopes for the current election.

I really wish reporters would stop using the phrase “election day” and telling is the election is only 2 weeks away. No, idiots, the election is currently underway and won’t even end on “election day” as votes will be counted for at least a few more days after “election day”.

I really hope we get to see Ms Stahl’s interview with Der Trumpster. We don’t get CBS broadcast over-the-air any more, but perhaps a stream will be available. The contrast between Trump and Biden/Harris will be amazing…

Anyway, best wishes to all the Deranged in Arizona family. Hard times will go away soon, I believe.
