Breaking: US average of new daily Covid cases now at its highest point of pandemic
Over the last 7-days, US added 481,372 new cases – the most the nation has added in a single week, according to JHU.
This includes two highest single days, Fri & Sat, both eclipsing 80,000.

Yesterday, China reported 0 new domestic confirmed cases and 26 new domestic asymptomatic cases, at Shufu County in Kashgar Prefecture, in Xinjiang “Autonomous” Region, which I posted about yesterday. The mass screening in the Prefecture is expected to be completed today (swabbing), with all results by tomorrow. Batch size here is again 10 samples. Transportation links to and from Kashgar are still open, but people leaving Kashgar need a negative test report. Those arriving do not need any test reports or quarantine.
Yesterday, China reported 16 new imported confirmed cases and 24 imported asymptomatic cases:
Today, Hong Kong reported 5 new cases, all imported, 2nd consecutive day without local cases reported in the city.
Brachiator
This was stupid on many levels. Many people paid more attention to state and local health authorities. I never listened to a live White House task force briefing and stopped paying attention altogether when Trump took over the briefings.
I’m pretty sure that California health agencies, certainly Los Angeles county, tracked nursing home staff and patients from the very beginning.
This is insane. Early on, there was speculation that states like North Dakota might not have as much as a problem because their population density was much less than, for example, New York. But North Dakota possibly threw away that advantage by not following recommendations and allowing events that brought people together.
WereBear
On a personal note, since I shared on the last COVID thread: Mr WereBear’s special cat, Olwyn, was diagnosed with something treatable with antibiotics and as of last night, she already seems better.

@Brachiator: For transmission risks density should probably be measured in people per room. 6 people in a double-wide is dense no matter how far apart the units are.
WereBear
Thank you, all! Like all social things in a pandemic, vet visits are me sitting in the vehicle while techs grab the carrier. So I can’t reassure her, and if the worst was the worst that we feared, she would still be alone.
Our pets give so much and ask so little. I know he and I would be a lot more stressy if it were just the two of us. But, fortunately, there’s five little furry elves to interact with. It does help.

I said all those idiots who ran to celebrate were going to spread the virus. Dodger stadium is in a ravine with only a few ways in; hopefully they’ll keep the gates closed and locked so fans can’t get close together to celebrate. If they finally manage to win, of course.

Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 numbers. DG of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reports 835 new cases for a cumulative reported total of 28,640 cases; and two new deaths for a total of 238 deaths — 0.83% of the cumulative reported total, 1.3x% of resolved cases. He also reports two new clusters, the Lintas cluster in Sabah and the Limbungan cluster in Labuan.
830 new cases are from local infection. Sabah has 410 cases: 60 in all clusters including the new Lintas cluster(six), 218 close-contact screenings, and 132 other screenings. Negeri Sembilan has 155 cases: 149 in existing clusters, four close-contact screenings, and two other screenings. Selangor has 125 cases: 59 in existing clusters, 42 close-contact screenings, and 24 close-contact screenings. Labuan has 74 cases: 69 from all clusters including the new Limbungan cluster(13), and five other screenings. Sarawak has 16 cases: 12 in existing clusters, three close-contact screenings, and one other screening.
Penang has 13 cases: 12 in existing clusters, and one other screening. Perak has 11 cases, all in existing clusters. KL has nine cases: six in existing clusters, one close-contact screening, and two other screenings. Johore has eight cases: seven in existing clusters, and one close-contact screening. Kedah has four cases, all in existing clusters. Terengganu also has four cases, all in existing clusters. And Putrajaya has one case, a close-contact screening.
Five new cases are imported, involving one Malaysian and four non-Malaysians, arriving from India (two), Bulgaria (two), and Indonesia.
674 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 18,499 patients recovered — 64.59% of the cumulative reported total. 9,744 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 89 are in ICU, of whom 32 are on ventilators.
The two deaths today, both reported in Sabah, are an 82-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, and atrial fibrillation; and a 53-year-old non-Malaysian woman.

The Japan story was very interesting about greater societal effects of the pandemic. Births down 11%, marriages off a third. I have suspected that the birth rate will fall in the US (it never recovered from the 2008 recession) but haven’t seen any stats. Anyone know anything more about the US?

Here in the UK we had 20,890 new cases yesterday. This is slightly up from Sunday’s figure of 19,790 and may still be affected by the weekend slowdown in reporting results. By home nation the figures are,
England – 17,883 (up by @1000)
Northern Ireland – 727 (down by @150)
Scotland – 1122 (down by @200)
Wales – 1158 (up by 54).
The 7-day positive case count continues to increase but the rate seems to have slowed somewhat.
Deaths – There were 102 new deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday, down by about 50 from the day before. 90 deaths were in England, 5 in Northern Ireland, 1 in Scotland and 6 in Wales.
Testing – 321,113 tests were processed out of a capacity of 377,996.
Hospitalisations – 7850 people were in hospital nationwide on Thursday, 22nd October. 743 were on ventilators as of Friday, 23rd. Both figures trending upwards.
General – Not much new politically. A number of Tory MP’s in seats won from Labour in the last election have written to Boris wanting him to clearly specify what criteria the government will use to move areas in the highest tier of restrictions (many of which they represent) into a lower tier.
A BBC presenter (Victoria Derbyshire) has been forced to apologise after saying she would be ignoring government restrictions on having a maximum of 6 people in the house by hosting Christmas dinner for 7.
More locally, our local train company (East Midlands) has announced an emergency timetable due to the number of their staff being off with coronavirus or quarantining due to exposure.

@OzarkHillbilly: My wife is both the person who puts cats in the carrier, and the Source Of All Good Things for the kitty, so she’s easily forgiven.
She has some magical vertical technique: Stand the carrier on end, pick up kitty, and drop kitty butt first into the carrier before she realizes what’s happening.
Looks simple but it doesn’t work for me.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I have to put the carrier in the attached garage with the carrier door open and the carrier sitting atop something so it is at chest level. The cat will let me pick him up so I can safely take him to the carrier and get him in quickly before he figures out what’s going on. If he sees the carrier he freaks out. If he smells the carrier he freaks out (yes, I’ve tried extensive cleaning). His behavior getting into the carrier and at the vet has been dubbed “Puma Mode” – just completely loses his little furry mind and you cannot reason with him.

@prostratedragon: I can assure you that our governor, Gary Herbert, is a blue-ribbon idiot. He has refused to mandate masks statewide and even resisted allowing mask mandates in our hardest-hit areas.
