Go Florida!
Baud
@Yarrow: There is still good in it. I can feel it.

Hey, yesterday DougJ posted a thermometer for Four Directions. Just this morning I got an email from a MN state senate candidate I am supporting up in the NW part of the state. Alan Roy grew up on the White Earth reservation.
Here’s how Four Directions (and other orgs like MN350) are helping: “A collaboration between Tribal nations, non-profits, and community organizers helped around 5,500 Red Lake Nation citizens to register to vote, and the remaining 2,500 registrants were split between White Earth and Leech Lake.
Excellent!
Keep donating to mobilizers and organizers, folks!
gwangung
@Yarrow: Still closer than I like. 5% seems to be the scumbag margin for the cheats down south.
Baud
@gwangung: If 5% is accurate, it should be sufficient. Most of the cheating occurs in the sub-1% range.

@Baud:
Forgive me for a stupid question, but I don’t pay much attention to polls or the science behind them. But those republican register voters, do they take into account how many are planning on voting Biden? I’m assuming since we are seeing a swing from older Americans to Biden, there are quite a few and they didn’t necessarily change their affiliation to do it
ETA: In other words, dumb this down for me. LOL

Glenn Greenwald has outdouched himself:
Glenn Greenwald Resigns From The Intercept With Scorched Earth Letter Accusing Editors of Censoring His Article on Joe Biden

Baud
@TaMara (HFG): I’m not a poll expert, but a poll should take into account who people are voting for. Information about ballots received does not — that only takes account of the party registration of the voter.

Next, straight to the Rupertbucks.

@hilts: I guess the Russians are paying him enough to give up his sinecure.
Baud
@hilts: I didn’t read his letter. Did he argue that their decision to not let him smear Joe Biden is unfair to Hillary Clinton?
rp
@hilts: hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Thankfully, my anxiety is still sky high because of the election. Otherwise I’d be ODing on schadenfreude.
TaMara (HFG)
@Baud: That to me is the most interesting piece to all of this…

Still smiling over Tucker Carlson saying he lost all those important documents about the H. Biden ‘scandal’. Maybe Hunter used the same disappearing ink Trump did in that massive ‘healthcare plan’ book they gave to Lesley Stahl
Joey Maloney
@hilts: And in conclusion, HAHAHAH!

If anyone is bored with US politics, in the UK the former head of the Labour party has been suspended from the party for refusing to accept the results of the antisemitism investigation.
Baud
@Yarrow: Tony Jay had some thoughts on it in the previous thread. Tensions are running high over there, and I don’t know enough to comment further. We still have a job to finish on this side of the pond.
piratedan
@hilts: are we positive that he didn’t bury the lede in the 11th paragraph so we could completely disregard what was said in the previous 10 and understand that what he wanted was the exact opposite of the article title?
Baud
@TaMara (HFG): Yes. I’ll be interested in seeing how effective Biden’s Republican outreach efforts have been.
Baud
@piratedan: Should we congratulate Glenn on his promotion?
hilts
Speaking of douchebags, did Chuck Todd take some extra strength stupid pills yesterday?
h/t https://www.mediaite.com/news/launch-him-into-the-sun-chuck-todd-gets-roasted-for-asking-if-biden-is-taking-covid-too-seriously/
Baud
@hilts: I posted that in the prior thread. He was the one who asked if Hillary was overprepared in 2016. What a douche.
rp
@Yarrow: Good riddance.
piratedan
@Baud: well it IS Greenwald, the only thing I would congratulate him for, would be an accumulation of physical injuries. Surprised he’s not won a Tony Award for his bad faith acting.
TaMara (HFG)
@hilts: No, that seems to be his regular level of stupid. ?
Alright, running out, you guys all behave… or not.
Baud
@piratedan: The Tony’s are clearly censoring Glenn because he criticizes Democrats.
Humanities Prof
@gwangung: I’ll never trust that Florida has gone for the good guys until the vote is officially certified.
But a 5% lead in a state as big as Florida is a really big lead, if it’s real, and not a product if sampling error. Because it would take hundreds of thousands of flipped and/or not-counted votes to offset that.
Baud
@hilts: I thought kos was banned from NBC News. Or is it just MSNBC.

Four Directions
Kattails, we couldn’t find an Act Blue setup for the 4 groups together, but hopefully these donations to FourDirections will help!
Ken
How do you separate Biden’s efforts from Trump’s? A large percentage of the Republicans who have announced they’re voting for Biden this year are adding “because of Trump”.
piratedan
@hilts: when I see shit like that, I would love to see Chuck Todd get sentenced (in the court of public decency) to unloading freezer trailers of corpses because the morgues are too full.

@piratedan: i like how it is “censorship” when they choose not to publish it, but not censorship when they reject others. Happens every day.

Everyday between now and Tuesday, I am curious what the cross-over points will be between lines at early voting sites and the nearest liquor stores.
I dare not ask about Election Day itself…
Immanentize
@piratedan: I like that sentence! Normally I just sentence guys like Todd to eat my shit for one year.

Oh no. Joe is starting off by taking the virus too seriously.

@eric: GG has lost his mind.
That is all….

Gee, Chuckles; don’t know. What I do know is in my city of El Paso we have been issued a 2 week stay-at-home order (voting, food shopping excluded) with a 10P.M. to 5A.M,curfew $500. fine, no mask $250. fine.
Plus local news is reporting that our convention center will be turned into a field hospital. Sooo…my bet is many in my area don’t think Biden is “overly concerned”. What a no-talent hack!

@hilts: My Republican governor is telling us that we shouldn’t go to weddings or funerals or family gatherings because that’s a prime source of virus spread.
So yeah, I take covid19 seriously and I damn well want my president to also.
gkoutnik
@Gin & Tonic: I stopped blood donations (I do aphereris as well) after COVID blossomed in our area, late summer; last donation was in the spring, when it was quiet here on that front. I’m overdue but quarantining pretty hard now – how do you feel about the donation environment re: safety, health, etc.? I’m just not used to being in a room for any amount of time with strangers.

@mali muso: And… appears to have dragged the Lincoln Project into his list of grievances. Probly a mistake.
Kent
As I understand it, they generally randomly sample as any voters as they can and then make adjustments to make their poll sample match as best as possible to what they predict the actual voting population will be.
So if they over or under-polled Black voters relative to what they project the electorate will be they adjust. If they over or under poll white men they adjust as necessary. If they over or underpoll college educated or old/young they adjust as necessary.
It’s part science and part art. Where they went especially wrong in 2016 in the upper midwest was they underpolled white working class voters relative to who actually turned out. They are trying not to make that same mistake again. But will probably make new ones this time around.
gkoutnik
@mali muso: When I heard that, I wondered if it is a way for Liberty to top off Falwell’s separation agreement and get the liability insurance to pay for it.
Baud
@Kent: Hopefully, the errors will be in our favor this time.
hueyplong
@mali muso: Lots. Of. Discovery.
That’s what I’m hoping for.

@TaMara (HFG): The Obama bros had a poll expert on talking about this yesterday. He said what Baud did. The polling does show some R-registered voters voting for Biden. There were also a large number of new voters and if they were just looking at returned ballots, they couldn’t know how to classify those.

Looking at the picture at the top of this post — those are two good looking people. It may be shallow, but in the visual age, that is a nice advantage. Every bit counts. Ted Cruz will never be president.
Jeffro
@hilts: man that is one terminal case of “both-sides” right there.
Chuck, would it have been that hard to say “one candidate actively encouraging dangerous behavior amongst his own followers during this pandemic, and one taking the pandemic seriously & following the science”?
Baud
@patrick II: I would have won 50 states.

Chris Hayes irritates me from time to time (“TONIGHT! our exclusive biweekly interview with Senator Bernie Sanders!”), has enraged me a couple of times (Tara Reade), but mostly I think he’s smart and a good talking head. But god help, this time I can only laugh at the Eternal Grad Student, whose mind is so open it fell out
I doubt there’s a trace of irony in there, even in the word “deserves”.

Still waiting to hear back… ;)

Slayer Pete talking about why it’s worth going on Fox news. And further about how the American public already agrees with Democratic positions. I’ll have to check out this interviewer’s podcast.

@hilts:
I wonder: does Chuck Todd have some concept, however vague, of an optimal level of seriousness?
Geeno
@VeniceRiley: One might say “overprepared”
Baud
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
You’re probably correct, but I don’t know how he could have written it t be any more ambiguous about whether he was snarking.
A long time ago, when I knew Glenn was a phony but many others didn’t, Cole had a post about how much better the Sunday morning talks shows would be if they had people like GG on.

@Betty Cracker: You beat me to it. The resignation was apparently sparked because The Intercept’s editors refused to allow him to spread the smears of Biden any further.

Geminid
@pamelabrown53: I usually stay away from speculation about who should serve where in a prospective Biden administration. But it occurred to me that Pete Buttigieg would make a good Ambassador to the U.N. His excellent communications skills are well suited for the job. And real diplomacy goes on there. I hope El Paso has been a good home for you. You Texans get a real treat tomorrow, when Kamala Harris comes to campaign. Your excellent Congresswoman Veronica Escobar may get a piece of the action. I understand that the Rio Grande valley is a particular target for the Democrats, and El Paso anchors the northern end.
WaterGirl
@Geminid: I try to avoid that, also, but damn, that is the best idea I have heard yet for how to use Pete’s skillset – whip smart, excellent communicator, ability to listen, etc. Good job.
Aleta
@hilts: I gotta think there’s a reason that’s not revealed, not just a principled act since that ‘d be completely out of character. Like his wealthy backer cutting his salary (or cutting funds to the intercept) or refusing to negotiate new demands. Or some bad journalism or mismanagement about to make news. Bc Greenwald always shifts blame and responsibility away from the honest story.
WaterGirl
@Aleta: Or, he had got mad because he was stymied in his efforts to smear Biden, so he threw a tantrum and left. There’s no nobility in that story.
This is just GG framing himself as the hero with principles.
Philbert
@Geminid: I would prefer Pete be press secretary or some public speaking position where he can continue to take it to the GOP. He does such a fine job of smilingly destroying their talking points and getting good Dem ideas across clearly. The press is useless.
Aleta
@Geminid: This may be naive of me but I’ve been thinking Pete Buttigieg could do a lot of good as a media talking head, and be well paid for it. It may not be what he wants to do right now, but if it were, it sure would help support for Dem policy and legislation, reforms for the VA, and help the clarity of Dem communication. I don’t know his beliefs re universal health care. Media communication about the ACA and other health care policy would do a lot of good b/c the RW is not going to quit trying to take it away. I think that people like Miles Taylor and others in the Lincoln Project will be formidable communicators to convince people to believe in some version of a different Republican party and we really need skilled people with PB’s strength at simplifying complicated ideas to be out there across from them. He presents well.
louc
@Kent: I was curious about this as well. The reports on young early voters shows the turnout in Florida thus far has been triple the turnout in 2016. Do pollsters take that type of data into account?
WaterGirl
@Philbert: I agree that Pete has the skills! But I’m pretty sure Pete has a lot of ambition, and press secretary would not put him on a path he would desire.
Aleta
@piratedan: I think it’s in the 32nd para:
“Prior to the [headline grabbing reason] , I had already been exploring the possibility of creating a new media outlet. I have spent a couple of months in active discussions …. To do that, to make this viable, I will need your support: people who are able to subscribe and sign up … will enable my work to thrive … I began my journalism career by depending on my readers’ willingness to support” ….
It”s like Andr.S’s presentation this summer: resign due to dangerous oppression, go on about the important principles at stake (vs dark ages etc ) and his pure motives. Ask for subscribers (for numbers to use to negotiate maximum $ from backers).

@Ocotillo: thanks. Good to know. Although I should have realized that the Big Bend country separates El Paso from the lower Rio Grande Valley. Still, Veronica Escobar is an impressive freshman Congresswoman. She has a safe seat, so I hope she’s been able to pitch in for other Texas Democrats.
