Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Everybody saw this coming.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

He really is that stupid.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Thought we could use a reminder of who we are fighting for.

I have to run out to a meeting.

Open thread (I know it difficult, but if we could keep it orange disease-free, I know some people could really use the respite).

Hey, yesterday DougJ posted a thermometer for Four Directions. Just this morning I got an email from a MN state senate candidate I am supporting up in the NW part of the state. Alan Roy grew up on the White Earth reservation.

Here’s how Four Directions (and other orgs like MN350) are helping: “A collaboration between Tribal nations, non-profits, and community organizers helped around 5,500 Red Lake Nation citizens to register to vote, and the remaining 2,500 registrants were split between White Earth and Leech Lake.

    Excellent!

Keep donating to mobilizers and organizers, folks!

Speaking of douchebags, did Chuck Todd take some extra strength stupid pills yesterday?

Political media figures and others swarmed Twitter to roast MSNBC’s Chuck Todd for asking, out loud on TV, whether former Vice President Joe Biden is taking COVID-19 “too seriously.”

Todd made the comment on Wednesday’s edition of MTP Live, while setting up a segment with DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas and Republican operative Michael Steele.

“Interesting when you look at both candidates, in some ways one not taking the virus seriously enough at all,” Todd said, then added “and one, if there’s a criticism, might be, is he taking it too seriously, at least when it comes to campaigning?” as Moulitsas let out a visible laugh.

But a 5% lead in a state as big as Florida is a really big lead, if it’s real, and not a product if sampling error.  Because it would take hundreds of thousands of flipped and/or not-counted votes to offset that.

ETA: In other words, dumb this down for me. LOL

As I understand it, they generally randomly sample as any voters as they can and then make adjustments to make their poll sample match as best as possible to what they predict the actual voting population will be.

So if they over or under-polled Black voters relative to what they project the electorate will be they adjust.  If they over or under poll white men they adjust as necessary.  If they over or underpoll college educated or old/young they adjust as necessary.

It’s part science and part art.  Where they went especially wrong in 2016 in the upper midwest was they underpolled white working class voters relative to who actually turned out.  They are trying not to make that same mistake again.  But will probably make new ones this time around.

@Amir Khalid: does Chuck Todd have some concept, however vague, of an optimal level of seriousness?

Yes, whatever amount the Democrat does not do.

Is this the same Griftwald who went on Bill Maher and said Benghzaaaaazi!11! is a scandal that needs to be investigated?

    Hmm. That’s some journalist.

Want a good laugh, watch “journalist” Griftwald say the polls are skewed (the mythical enthusiasm gap) and predict Obama would lose the election because youth and latinos would stay home and swing states like Florida would flock to Mittens.

    Good times

Maybe now the former failed corporate attorney, failed Klan lawyer, failed Hair-fetish pornographer, failed sock-puppet grifter, failed election handicapper, failed PAC founder, failed conspiracy theorist, failed Paultard, failed Iraq-invasion hawk, failed Bush supporter, failed blogger can pay his back taxes (rule of law for thee, but not for me).

Is this the same Griftwald who said the 2012 polls were skewed and Romney would win?

Or this the same Griftwald who pushes the republican conspiracy theories on Benghazi?

Or is this the same Griftwald who pushes Trump’s racist talking points on immigration?

@pamelabrown53: I usually stay away from speculation about who should serve where in a prospective Biden administration. But it occurred to me that Pete Buttigieg would make a good Ambassador to the U.N. His excellent communications skills are well suited for the job. And real diplomacy goes on there.     I hope El Paso has been a good home for you. You Texans get a real treat tomorrow, when Kamala Harris comes to campaign. Your excellent Congresswoman Veronica Escobar may get a piece of the action. I understand that the Rio Grande valley is a particular target for the Democrats, and El Paso anchors the northern end.

@hilts:  I gotta think there’s a reason that’s not revealed, not just a principled act since that ‘d be completely out of character.  Like his wealthy backer cutting his salary  (or cutting funds to the intercept) or refusing to negotiate new demands.  Or some bad journalism or mismanagement about to make news.  Bc Greenwald always shifts blame and responsibility away from the honest story.

@Geminid: I would prefer Pete be press secretary or some public speaking position where he can continue to take it to the GOP. He does such a fine job of smilingly destroying their talking points and getting good Dem ideas across clearly. The press is useless.

@Geminid:  This may be naive of me but I’ve been thinking  Pete Buttigieg could do a lot of good as a media talking head, and be well paid for it.  It may not be what he wants to do right now, but if it were, it sure would help support for Dem policy and legislation, reforms for the VA, and help the clarity of Dem communication.  I don’t know his beliefs re universal health care.  Media communication about the ACA and other health care policy would do a lot of good b/c the RW is not going to quit trying to take it away.  I think that people like Miles Taylor and others in the Lincoln Project will be formidable communicators to convince people to believe in some version of a different  Republican party and we really need skilled people with PB’s strength at simplifying complicated ideas to be out there across from them.  He presents well.

    @piratedan:   I think it’s in the 32nd para:

“Prior to the [headline grabbing reason] , I had already been exploring the possibility of creating a new media outlet. I have spent a couple of months in active discussions …. To do that, to make this viable, I will need your support: people who are able to subscribe and sign up … will enable my work to thrive … I began my journalism career by depending on my readers’ willingness to support” ….

It”s like Andr.S’s presentation this summer:  resign due to dangerous oppression, go on about  the important principles at stake (vs dark ages etc ) and his pure motives.  Ask for subscribers (for numbers to use to negotiate maximum $ from backers).
