Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

We still have time to mess this up!

The frogs are rarely mistaken.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

So many bastards, so little time.

This blog will pay for itself.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

He really is that stupid.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The willow is too close to the house.

GOP Death Cult Open Thread: Nefarious ACB

U.S. Supreme Court nominee's confirmation hearings on track, McConnell says https://t.co/6WMUTMN3rO pic.twitter.com/UFfgVhUvXW

— Reuters (@Reuters) October 3, 2020

… “Previously-scheduled floor activity will be rescheduled until after October 19th … The important work of the Senate’s committees can and will continue as each committee sees fit,” McConnell said in a statement.

McConnell added that the Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee would start Barrett’s confirmation hearings on Oct. 12 as previously planned. Senators have the option of attending the hearings in person or remotely.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said McConnell’s decision was dangerous and reckless.

“If it’s too dangerous to have the Senate in session it is also too dangerous for committee hearings to continue,” Schumer said in a statement…

McConnell’s announcement, however, could mean that no new coronavirus aid bill will be approved by Congress in the coming days, despite negotiations this week between House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and White House officials…

#MoscowMitch will kill his own teammates as happily as he would Democrats…

NOTE: Senate rules require ALL 12 Republicans on the Judiciary Committee to show up — in person — to advance Barrett's nomination in vote expected Oct. 22 if Democrats boycott. 2 of those senators have tested positive for COVID. https://t.co/0qo8Q94sYM

Submit Your 2021 Pet Calendar Pics by Oct 15

by WaterGirl|  October 3, 20205:35 pm| 39 Comments

This post is in: Balloon Juice, Open Threads, Pet Calendar

Since there’s nothing else going on (!!!) maybe this would be a good time to go through your photos and submit your pics for the 2021 BJ Pet Calendar.

21 people have started the process by sending in their email, and we have 75 pet names for the calendar so far!

Just send email to pet-calendar or to watergirl.  If you need more info about the exact email addresses, check out Contact Us in the white bar up top, for details.

Seeing someone yawn is supposed to be relaxing, so Henry is here to help you shift gears.

I actually caught myself yawning as I added Henry as the featured image, so that apparently isn’t just an old wives tale.

…..

Cliff Notes, in case you missed the Pet Calendar post:

Here’s the Plan:

Calendars will be available to order by *December 1. That’s the hope/plan, anyway!

Beth needs time to work with the pics on the design, so fair warning: we have to be tough about deadlines in order to have the calendars available to order by December 1.

Please get your pet pics in by October 15, which is less than two weeks from today.

Extension through Nov 1 are available if your pet is dressing up for Halloween, IF you let us know ahead of time, and IF you get us your pics the next day.

For non dress-up pets, you get an extension through Nov 1, but please let us know by Oct 15 that you plan to send photos in.

We have a new system this year.

It’s a 4-step process, start to finish.  (for you)

  1. start the process by sending an email message
  2. use the link we supply to upload your files
  3. check for your nym and names of your pets in the spreadsheet we’ll post on BJ
  4. notify us if anything is incorrect

Details will be sent to you by email once you send the email with your nym and pet names.

This All Feels So Soviet

by John Cole|  October 3, 20201:31 pm| 288 Comments

This post is in: COVID-19 Coronavirus, Assholes

Trump’s doctors gave an update of sorts, and basically all we really know is he is not dead. They otherwise gave no information, although they did blow the coverup over when he was diagnosed:

At a Saturday morning press conference, President Trump’s medical team suggested that the President knew he tested positive for coronavirus earlier than has been previously reported. Dr. Sean Conley, Trump’s physician, said that we’re “72 hours into the diagnosis,” meaning the President could have test positive as early as Wednesday.

At a press conference, Trump’s medical team at Walter Reed said the president is fever-free and that they are “extremely happy” with the progress the president has made. But the team refused to answer key questions about when the president was first diagnosed, first symptomatic and whether he had received supplemental oxygen.

We don’t know his temp, any lung damage, etc. Nothing. This all feels so Soviet- “Oh Andropov is fine he is just taking a week off. No, no- nothing is with Chernenko, he’s at his mountain retreat.”

Meanwhile, more and more of these idiots who went to the SCOTUS superspreader event are testing positive, including walking corpse Kellyanne Conway, the Outlaw Jersey Whale Chris Christie, a couple more Republican Senators, and on and on. And I hope the list keeps growing and growing. Take ’em all.

Obviously I feel bad for the staff and support and journalists who had no choice but to be there, but for the rest of them, fuck ’em. I honestly feel the same way about all these guys catching COVID and potentially dying the way I feel when I read a headline about a bunch of terrorists who accidentally blew themselves up while making suicide vests.

It’s all so… biblical. The religious nutjobs and their users and enablers, the people who blame hurricanes and tornadoes and floods on gay marriage and abortion, just had to get together and hug it out over the Supreme Court seat they are stealing in the name of Jesus, and God sent them a literal fucking plague. They very same plague they have been denying for a year. Fucking Galatians 6:7, bitches. I mean, it’s awesome.

Here’s a photo I took a couple of days ago of two Pileated Woodpeckers. I see them around here a lot, put I’ve never seen a pair in the same frame until this week:

The male is higher on the branch, with the missus trailing behind. Not much difference in appearance between the genders with this species, but the male has a red “mustache” stripe on his face.

Just saw a promising poll in the NYT:

By overwhelming margins, voters in Pennsylvania and Florida were repelled by President Trump’s conduct in the first general election debate, according to New York Times/Siena College surveys, as Joseph R. Biden Jr. maintained a lead in the two largest battleground states.

Over all, Mr. Biden led by seven percentage points, 49 percent to 42 percent, among likely voters in Pennsylvania. He led by a similar margin, 47-42, among likely voters in Florida.

This is a post-debate but pre-COVID diagnosis poll. Polls don’t mean much, of course, but I’ll take good news where I find it these days. Open thread!
