Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

Let there be snark.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

So many bastards, so little time.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

No one could have predicted…

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Site Update: Election Night & More

by WaterGirl|  November 1, 20201:50 pm| 155 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Site Maintenance

FacebookTweetEmail

There have been two, or possibly three, things going on lately with the Balloon Juice site.

If you don’t care about the details, know that I am working with the developers to resolve the issues. You can jump to the bottom and watch the Bob Bauer video.  Bob Bauer heads Biden’s vote protection effort.  After that you can click the link to listen to Letitia James (the New York AG) message to voters. You won’t regret it.

Open thread.

?

Details about the site for anyone who is interested:

The custom twitter feed plugin that automatically posts new threads in John’s twitter feed lost its mind – on or about the night of the last debate.  We turned off that plugin, and the site was back to normal.  We left it turned off for a few days, then turned it on again at some point that weekend.  It misbehaved some more, so we turned it off again.

That’s why you don’t see John’s twitter feed in the sidebar.

I opened a ticket with the plugin developer.  We will need to turn the plugin back on so they can (hopefully) catch it in the act so they can see what’s gong on.  I’ll let you know when that happens so you won’t have to wonder what’s going on. I worked with them on another issue with the twitter feed plugin last December, and they were helpful then, so I have high hopes.

?

The WordPress search plugin is also acting out.  I worked with our site developer on Thursday, and with their monitoring software, he was able to figure out the query in the search plugin that is causing the problem.  While we were on the phone, he contacted the developer for that plugin (nice that our site developer knows him personally).  The second thing the plugin developer said was “that’s a lot of comments!”  I laughed.  (We are at 5.9 million comments on BJ.)

The good news on that front is that developer has already looked at the problem and written some new code to fix it.

Our site developer has the new code and will be installing it and rebuilding the site index so we can see if the problem has been resolved.  That should happen this weekend, or possibly on Monday.

?

Election Night

Election Night on Balloon Juice is gonna give the site a workout, so I want to share the plan for that night.

Plan A:  The custom twitter feed developers fix the bug in the twitter feed plugin and the WordPress search plugin people fix their respective bugs before Tuesday, and the site stops having the slowdown issue..

Plan B: If both bugs are not fixed by Tuesday, then the offending plugin(s) will be turned off for Nov 3 and as long as the election craziness lasts.  Or until the bug is fixed.

I also plan to ask our site developer to keep a special eye on the site on Tuesday night, though we obviously can’t expect him to be up all night.

?

The third thing that’s going on with the site appears to primarily affect iPads.  Other tablets are possibly affected as well, but the only devices I am aware of so far are iPads.  The problem with impossibly slow loading of the front page appears to be related to twitter, but we don’t know if that’s the cause or a symptom.  My strong suspicion is that the WordPress search plugin issue is affecting iPads, particularly older iPads, more than other devices.

My plan is to give the Search plugin people a chance to fix their bug and then see if the iPad issue is also resolved.  If the iPad issue remains after that, then I’d like to work with a few iPad peeps to do some testing to see if we can narrow down the issue.  So if you’re an iPad person and you’re willing to be part of that testing, please let me know in the comments.

Questions?  Ask away.

Bonus!

Bob Bauer heads Biden’s vote protection effort. Watch his video.  I promise you’ll feel better.

So you’re worried Trump is going to try to steal the election? Join the club. But Bob Bauer, the Democratic super-lawyer and head of Biden’s massive voter protection effort, had a soothing message when I sat with him for @SHO_TheCircus:

I got a new iPad mini a month or so ago and was shocked at how quickly everything, including tweets, loads. Doubt that’s of much help, but there it is.

A Headline over at Raw Story just now:

Trump moves election night ‘party’ to White House so he can invite 400 guests despite COVID rules: report

The real purpose (he would have had it there covid rules or no) is to declare victory for president while actually being president in the White House with hundreds of official looking people in attendance. Step one to overturn the election. I hope Joe wins by a huge amount.

the Bauer interview was taped ten+ days ago.  I wonder what he has to say about what happened yesterday in TX?  I am seeing a couple of reports that the FBI is looking into it.  But that truck parade has been harassing people in that area for awhile now and the local PD and mayor aren’t either on their side or too afraid to confront them. The truck parade boasts they are ‘protected’ by local militia.  Media of course are playing ‘what about antifa’ games with their coverage?

Obviously you can’t fix it with all this going on but I would really like to see the ability to quotepost comments to Twitter. Every way I’ve tried only displays a header for the post.

@patrick II: Alternatively, he knows that a national 10 point lead by Biden means that the popular vote will be embarrassingly lopsided, and that even as he will no doubt challenge PA and a couple other states, he does not want to be attempting a big ass party at his D.C. hotel, only to have maybe 200 paid staffers as the only ‘guests’, looking very glum and dejected, while a DJ spins YMCA endlessly.

    @patrick II:

Step one to overturn the election.

Okay stop that. He can’t overturn the election vy starting with a declaration. And let’s say there’s enough machinations to overturn, say, Pennsylvania. Biden has many more paths to victory. And his operation isn’t smart or well funded enough to overturn every electoral vote everywhere he would need to. He’s going to lose, and it’s not going to be close. Look at the number of new voters coming in. I watched an interview with Ben Wikler, and he said the huge number of new voters are skewing younger and not white. We might need a bigger word than tsunami, because we might not be ready for what’s about to happen/

The Republicans attempt to suppress  100,000+ drive-in votes in Houston has been thrown out by the Texas Supreme Court without comment. Of course there is still a case in a federal court, but it’s a start. I get the impression that there are still some Republicans in Texas that want a functioning state. There was also a GOP state Rep that thought this was ridiculous.

    Two things:

    — 5.9 million comments just made me laugh. That’s amazing, although not surprising when I think about how prolific the place is. Do any of you really keep up with every thread? I mean comments and front-pagers, either one.

    — Thanks to WaterGirl for dealing with all the technical stuff. I mean, thanks to all the people who keep the place going, but the technical side is surely endless, and often a headache. Hopefully it’s fun sometimes too. (Also thanks to WaterGirl for the respite threads lately…the photo threads in particular are saving my sanity.)

@Calouste:  It’s going to a Dolt45 judge then to the 5th Circuit. The decision might not make to the Supreme Court since they’ll just say this was already decided, lower court ruling stand, blah blah blah. So the Fifth might be the killing blow, especially if that decision comes after the election and those voters have no remedy at that time. Which is what the Republicans are hoping for here.

I worked in IT too long to complain about much of anything, unless it is really creating problems for me.  My ISP has so many problems I would hesitate to say any slowing is the fault of the site anyway.

Just a comment – the only thing that is noticeably slow for me (android phone and windows 10 slightly aging computer) are posts with lots of twitter imbeds.  The post and the frames (and any plaintext) come up immediately, followed by the formatted tweet and finally any photos.  This is the case for any page with a lot of tweets, and sometimes even if there is only one tweet with pictures.  Even at its worst, I don’t recall having to look at the modem to see if the connection has dropped, so it is still close to sub-second response time.  If I had to guess, I would put site issues at the bottom of the list of possible reasons for the slow response.

You guys all do great work.  Thank you.

@Sloane Ranger: In WordPress, you can think of “Plugins” as mini programs that each handle a particular function.  And they are all written/programmed by different companies.

There’s one to handle spam, there’s one to handle editing, there’s one to handle moderation of comments (approving, deleting, etc), there’s one to automatically add a post to John’s twitter feed, etc.

Two of the ones we are using started to misbehave and slow down the site.

A fourth person had on a Biden Harris mask. We mutually complimented each other’s political garb.  I hardly go anywhere now, so it was particularly nice to see allies.

@WaterGirl: Twitter and Facebook are on top of the Flash end-of-life so their embeds should still work.  We might lose some third-party ads, boo hoo.

Also end-of-life doesn’t mean the plugins stop working or the servers stop delivering flash files.  I think I read that Microsoft will be disabling the Flash plugin in IE and Edge, but don’t recall anything about Firefox or Chrome.  I need to read up on that. There may be some annoying inconsistencies as it gradually disappears.

I try to at least scan every thread, esp On the Road for the beauty and variety.

Some days when I go to town it doesn’t happen. Most days I stay home to avoid the Trump Plague. Those days I catch it all, the whole Balloon Juice day.

I have been having an issue with links in people’s posts to twitter for about a month. It would say something went wrong and have blank twitter. About 2 weeks ago  I discovered if I tried again the same link would work fine. I assumed it was twitter changing something and didn’t mention it here. I think I had it happen somewhere else too but now I’m not sure. I don’t really like twitter, so I didn’t care enough to wonder much.

the second time works every time. Now that I mention it, it does seem kind of odd.

    @Another Scott:

Power just blew in my neighborhood so be patient- the maps are on my computer. But this is a good way to build some drama for sure…

    Ouch! :-)

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@WaterGirl: Ob = Obligatory  :-)  To muddy the thread.

(It’s off-topic here, but I don’t see any other recent Open Threads.)

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@WaterGirl: Yes!  He’s doing a great service to us junkies, letting us know how to pace ourselves before we can rest knowing that Joe and Kamala actually have won.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@Gvg: Yeah, that is a twitter thing not a BJ thing.

It works best if you refresh the page with the error message as opposed to hitting the try again button.  Page refresh works for me every time with that twitter error message.

@Another Scott: I originally marked this Open Thread up top, so you are all good.  Not that it wouldn’t have been fine anyway.

@Gvg:  Exact same thing has been happening to me 90% of the time. Also I am getting raw HTML code at the start of my reply. Looks good when I publish it though. ETA: I fix it the way WaterGirl @148 said. It’s very reliable.

@The Lodger: What you are describing with HTML code at the start of your reply is on twitter, right, not on BJ?

@WaterGirl: Nope, it’s BJ. It doesn’t happen all the time, but I can’t escape it with some comments.

@WaterGirl: In the DuckDuckGo browser (phone only), click on the menu button (three dots, upper right), select Disable Privacy Protection.

This apparently whitelists everything on the website you’re looking at, because now I get all the ads, but Twitter embeds load correctly. :)

@The Lodger: Can you get me a screen capture next time that happens?

@mrmoshpotato: I don’t use DuckDuckGo, eems like you should be able to enable social media without whitelisting for ads.
