Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Giving up is unforgivable.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

He really is that stupid.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

This blog will pay for itself.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

    @NotMax:

    It’s a quality stick. I’m ordering Gurkhas next. My BP and pulse rate are surprisingly good, so I can handle a couple a day.

    That cat video isn’t much of a respite. Shadow our mean kitty is heartbroken about our rottmix dying. Shadow even sleeps with me now, and she hates me.

    Very, very rarely treat myself to an upper tier brand ($$, don’tcha know). That said, have enjoyed some of the ones from CAO in the past.

    So – Admiral Nelson and Dr. Pete.

    Admiral Pete or Dr. Nelson?

    A short thread showing how cats have been walking over our stuff for 4000 years. Starting with this 15th century manuscript from Dubrovnik, immortalised and enhanced by a Mediterranean kitty.

    A P.S. added for attribution of the 1st photo in that thread:

    Vote Historia @book_historia
    The manuscript is located in the State Archives of Dubrovnik, and contains copies of letters sent to the envoys and merchants of the area (Lettere di Levante). Shoutout to @EmirOFilipovic  for the find back in 2013!

    Emir O. Filipović @EmirOFilipovic
    Thanks very much for the shoutout!    Kudos to people that actually take the time and effort to find the origin of the image.

    Filipović wrote a little more here about Dubrovnik and about finding things like that image:

    For those unfamiliar with the history of Dubrovnik, it is perhaps most important to say that in  the Middle Ages it was a commune governed by the local aristocracy and that one of the main aspects of its medieval economy was seafaring trade.

    … The fact that this commune maintained its independence as a free state (despite recognizing Venetian, Hungarian, and Ottoman authority during different periods in its history) until the beginning of the nineteenth century meant that the records of its archives were spared and they now represent one of the best sources for studying all kinds of medieval and early modern topics. In fact, the medieval Mediterranean comes alive in the Dubrovnik Archives.

    … In this multitude of documents, archival registers and books, a researcher can  … also encounter the little traces which medieval people left in the manuscripts preserving them for posterity. They are rare and curious and it is refreshing when you come across something like them while conducting research.

    @NotMax:

    I tried a CAO this week, but it wasn’t quite there for me – maybe the wrong type?  As I say about whiskey, everybody’s palate is different, and something that other people love may not be my cup of tea (Bulleit, Basil Hayden, overly peaty scotch) and vice versa. I’m looking at cigars that way these days (wasn’t all that keen on a Cohiba either).

    The Rockys are fantastic to my taste, as are Gurkha Centurians. But then again, so is a comparatively cheap La Perla White Pearl.

    I really like this hobby; it’s fiddly, but I need a larger humidor for the variety.

    @Aleta: Walking all over them, yes, but I’ve never had problems with cats urinating on books.  Maybe vellum is more interesting than wood pulp?

    @Ken:

    Daughter’s cat is a sweet boy, but he likes to wander in at about 5:30 am to knock over anything not nailed down – particularly water glasses. Our aggressive sleeper starfish cat will stay in our bed until 8 if you let her. Dog would stay there till 9 or later.

    My one kitten has been all over the place. They are hiding right now because they discovered my pantry and caused a huge noise and they ran out of there scared shitless.

    Absolutely. One person’s “Boy, now that’s a cigar” is another’s “Meh.”

    Don’t recall which type of CAO it was that I found satisfying, but think it was whatever they put out closest to a cigarillo size. Last better than average brand I treated myself to (maybe two years ago) was one some folks find too bold a smoke, H. Upmann.

    Used to turn to Schimmelpenninck Duets as a reliable go-to non-premium brand but they’ve since become impossible to find anywhere.
