Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

People are complicated. Love is not.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Let there be snark.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I’ve been online off and on all day, mostly on Twitter with some time out for text banking.

Some people are graciously posting calming threads of our natural world.

The weather across the country is good.

The weather gods have blessed us with numerous high pressure systems across the US today to help get out the #vote!! pic.twitter.com/zM8UUJaBe9

— Sam Schumach (@SamSchumach) November 3, 2020

There are few attempts at interfering with the vote. The Texas suit to remove 127,000 drive-in votes was thrown out of federal court. Several states have had phonecalls telling people it’s dangerous to go to the polls today and they should wait until tomorrow, an old trick. The Secretaries of State are on it.

Trump’s army of Second Amendment “poll protectors” haven’t shown up. Looks like tieing up traffic is the most they’re capable of. And oh yeah, only on the weekends.

I have unofficial word that Santa Fe County’s voting rate was at 77% early this afternoon, and I am seeing similar numbers for other places.

Boring is good. Open thread!

Good.  Win or lose, the results should be based on the voters.

I chased a link and found this gem:

    History says, Don’t hope
on this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
    the longed for tidal wave
    of justice can rise up,
    and hope and history rhyme.

This is where we find ourselves, longing for the tidal wave of justice, and praying that hope and history will once more rhyme again.

I did a little turn around my block earlier today and noticed that the house that’s been displaying a Gadsen flag since the new family moved in earlier this year no longer has it out.  I’m pretty sure it was up on Sunday, so the disappearance is recent.

It’s too much to hope that they had a change of heart, but maybe they realized it annoyed people and decided to stop.

A coworker went to Trump’s super spreader event, showed pictures of it then claimed that Biden is a pedophile and something about Hunter Biden’s laptop. How can anyone be this stupid? Just the excitement on her face when she talks of Trump makes me want to gag. Like a teenager fawning over a boy band. This woman is almost 60. She also thinks New Jersey is going to be red. Trump winning New Jersey’s electoral votes to run up the score. You have to be very special to think that’s going to happen.

It does seem like their hearts aren’t really into the ratfucking this year. And every time they do try to start something, like the Biden posters in Philly, there’s a rapid response of “You lie, and here are the CVS-length receipts to prove it.”

    Michigan stepping UP:

More than 92% of all absentee ballots have been returned, according to @JocelynBenson. More than 3.1 million Michiganders voted before Election Day.

Whole thread worth reading; here’s the conclusion:

But under Trump Rs have positioned party in open opposition to what America is becoming, governing only for those most fearful of the country’s changes. At any political moment, the past may win for a while. But the future always gets the last word. That may start today. (end)

(CBS)  The plaintiffs appealed Monday’s decision [by Judge Hanen to dismiss the lawsuit] to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Their appeal for an emergency injunction to block drive-thru voting Tuesday was rejected, but it was also rendered largely moot before the court could rule.

Hours after Hanen’s order was filed Monday, Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins announced that nine of the county’s 10 drive-thru polling locations would be closed Tuesday, the final day of voting for this year’s election.   Hollins wrote in a series of tweets that Hanen’s order left the door open for challenges to votes cast Tuesday at all but one drive-thru location. Hanen wrote Tuesday that Texas election law allows for “movable structures” as early voting locations — which he said the tents used to how drive-thru ballot boxes qualify as — but not for election day locations.

“In order to allow for drive-thru voting on Election Day while ensuring that all votes will be counted, the only drive-thru voting center on Election Day will be at Toyota Center,” Hollins tweeted Tuesday night. …  Harris County’s drive-thru sites are all located near to in-person voting locations.

This isn’t even worthy of a participation trophy:

Richard Grenell, a Trump supporter and the former acting director of national intelligence, falsely claimed a photo of a maskless Joe Biden showed the former vice president not following his own advice to wear a mask during the pandemic. In fact, the photo was taken before the pandemic, in November 2019, as made clear by the caption in Vogue magazine where it originally ran.

The whale poop sniffing dog that was featured in Netflix’s Connections series is going to be in an upcoming episode of Nova (I think it was Nova. PBS somewhere).

This dog stands on the bow of the boat and points the scientists towards floating whale poop, so they can get samples.  The scientists and dog work together in the San Juan islands (where the above mentioned Haro Strait is.)

I’m hopeful that we will keep the house but not expecting to take the Senate.  Hoping to be as surprised about the Senate as I was in 2006. Definitely not as giddy as I was in 2012 when Obama trounced Mitt.  But it feels like the GOP is as worn out as we are with chaos.  Difference is our vote might mean change.  They have nothing to look forward to except more chaos if they turn out – so I expect R turnout to be low and there to much whinging about Soros bucks paying for votes tomorrow morning.

A dear friend of mine was accosted by a “Trump Train” in a blue city in a very red state today. They profiled him as a Dem voter on the road (though he has no bumper stickers); two big pickup trucks with all the flags etc., tailgated him and swerved into him the whole way to work. When he parked at his workplace they parked in the lot and called him the N-word and faggot, said “We know where you live” and drove off to find someone else to harass. He’s not African American or gay but does have close-cropped dark hair. I dunno I guess he didn’t look redneck enough.

He’s complained before that a few of the people where he works are low-information Republicans, though basically well-intentioned; I wonder if they saw what happened to him. And, as always, I wonder why anyone “well-intentioned” could possibly think it’s OK to support and associate with bullies like that. Horrible.

For some reason the Trump visible support has gone up the last few days.  More people displaying signs, and a brand new Trump flag (more like a desecration of the American one than the usual banners).  Like the guy at the bank yesterday whose parting remark was “vote Trump”.   At this point it seems a little late to try to drum up more support.

My husband has a highschool classmate who emigrated there right out of college to teach. Eventually she came back. She wishes she had stayed

ETA I heard on NPR Science Friday if you raise a bunch of bats together and then release them into the wild into a much larger colony, they will still stay together within the larger colony. Friends.

From the El Paso Matters liveblog:

2:20 p.m.: El Paso turnout surpasses 50% of registered voters

More than half of all registered El Paso County voters have cast ballots in this election, only the second time since 2000 that has happened. The previous time was in 2016.

Just over 24,000 people had cast ballots on Election Day as of 2 p.m., adding to more than 222,000 early votes cast.

The goal is to get El Paso county to 60%. Looks like it’s within reach.

Walked by my polling location, saw only a couple cars, laughed because everyone here voted first week of October.  Stroll through very-well-off neighborhood en route to here showed Biden-Harris signs ubiquitous, Black Lives Matter signs well in evidence, Trump signage entirely absent.

Not a surprise and I’d never take it as representative of the state but why the hell you think I live here.

@Pete Downunder: Australians consider them pests?  I adore them!

I was in Australia back in 2010, and our first stop was Cairns.  On the tour bus coming into town, I saw flocks (? “clouds,” excuse me) of fruit bats flying through the city.  I was gobsmacked, enchanted, delighted!

A couple days later, my aunt and I were talking to downtown.  We passed a large but seedy mansion on one side of the sidewalk, and a huge overgrown tree on the other side of the sidewalk.  I happened to look up as we passed under the tree, and saw entire families of fruit bats hanging upside down sleeping.

“Oh how COOL!” I said – rather loudly – and startled some of them.  Who did what animals startled out of sleep will sometimes do: empty their bladders and bowels in case they have to take off in a hurry.

    They didn’t get me.

    They got my aunt.

According to the polls, almost half your country thinks the Orange One is handling the pandemic well and a high number are saying they haven’t been financially impacted by it.

Also, they’ve just said that the Biden campaign is pessimistic about Florida.

Considering we’ve been primarily vote-by-mail for several election cycles, this is eyepopping.

Sacramento County elections officials report 10 of the 84 county vote centers are experiencing long lines and long waits, including waits of up to two hours at the South Natomas vote center.

Officials are asking voters who planned to go to those centers in the afternoon or evening to look up nearby vote center sites instead. Officials said voters can download the SACVOTE smart phone app, which lists locations of all voting centers, as well as noting which ones are the nearest.

Officials, meanwhile, are setting up extra voting booths outside the building at the Natomas voting site.

The centers with the largest capacity for fast voting are Golden 1 Center arena downtown and Sacramento State University.

@Brachiator: AP’s VoteCast includes surveys of mail-in/early voters:

AP VoteCast combines interviews with a random sample of registered voters drawn from state voter files with self-identified registered voters selected using nonprobability approaches. In general elections, it also includes interviews with self-identified registered voters conducted using NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak® panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population.

Interviews are conducted in English and Spanish. Respondents may receive a small monetary incentive for completing the survey. Participants selected as part of the random sample can be contacted by phone and mail and can take the survey by phone or online. Participants selected as part of the nonprobability sample complete the survey online.

In the 2020 general election, the survey is expected to complete about 140,000 interviews with registered voters between Oct. 26 and Nov. 3, concluding as polls close on Election Day. AP VoteCast will deliver data about the presidential election in all 50 states as well as all Senate and governors’ races in 2020. AP VoteCast will highlight the opinions of voters and nonvoters nationwide.

@Baud: I heard a news report that Trump GOTV people are telling CNN that they are extremely carnsared and mightily spooked about Trump’s election day turnout in some critical swing states: not up to expectations, gotta get a last burst out, texting out to urge them to stay in long times in some places.

OK… I guess that is a good sign. The Trump campaign GOTV in most places has banked on just this one day. And their GOTV plan was a few personal contacts early. Not sure how that matches up with such a long delay until election day.

The Biden team adapted to changing circumstances and prepared early mail, early in-person and election day drop off mail and in-person plans. Which makes sense. I haven’t  seen any stories that Trump team really adapted much over time.

So, hard to believe Trump team may have been somewhat limited in their planning (euphemism alert). Let’s hope for the best.

And from what I’ve heard, some state GOP operations adapted to multiple voting modalities as Dems did, others sat their and hoped (rather than planned) that all loyal Trumpsters would magically show up on election day and crawl over broken glass to vote.

The exit polls will be all over the map, and many of them will mean nothing.

Since when can you “turn down” a court order

When you are Donald trump or a deplorable working for Donald trump. (but you know this)

USPS disregards court order to conduct sweeps in 12 postal districts after more than 300,000 ballots can’t be traced

The U.S. Postal Service turned down a federal judge’s order late Tuesday afternoon to sweep mail processing facilities serving 15 states, saying instead it would stick to its own inspection schedule. The court order came after the agency disclosed that more than 300,000 ballots nationwide could not be traced.

U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of the District of Columbia on Tuesday had given the mail agency until 3:30 p.m. to conduct the “all clear” checks to ensure that any found ballots could be delivered before polls closed. His order affected 12 postal districts spanning 15 states.

But in a filing sent to the court just before 5 p.m., Justice Department attorneys representing the Postal Service said the agency would not abide by the order, to better accommodate inspectors’ schedules.

I’m not sure adding together separate poor quality and impossible to interpret data sets gets you much. Not worth the trouble. Better to just relax and wait for a day or two to see the actual data. Nothing we can do individually to change the big national picture anyway.

I’m getting ready to leave for Sighthound Hall, and I don’t know how much posting I’ll be doing on my phone. I’ll be reading, though. But I’ll post this now, even though it feels like more of a Balloon Juice After Dark thing.

I’ve been very emotional all day, in a good way and for a number of reasons. Last night I was going through photographs of the housecat to pick one to send in for the calendar, and that hit me unexpectedly hard. I still miss the little furball riding shotgun at her workstation. WaterGirl helped me pick out a good one that is quintessential housecat.

Then today I was struck by the outpouring of community sentiment for Balloon Juice in the morning thread. This place means a lot to me, and it has been a big help in some tough times. It’s my first and last stop on the Interwebs every day. I feel like I know a lot of you, and I am thankful for your energy. ? Even you lurkers! I know you’re out there. I think about that sometimes when I (or someone else) drop a helpful hint or a pearl of wisdom and it sinks like a stone. We never know all the effects of our actions and words. I have gained a lot from other people’s comments that I never replied to. Nothing is lost.

And, of course, there’s the election. Sometime in the last few days my anxiety went away and was replaced by something almost like confidence. Could have just been that I realized that three or four friends had called me to talk them off the ledge. Maybe I was projecting something that I wasn’t allowing myself to see. I feel like we are at the beginning of a sea change in our society. The silver lining of the Trump disaster is that it revealed a lot of fault lines and structural rot that we can no longer ignore. Let the rebuilding begin. Today is a good start.

As I was out and about today I was listening to oldies on SiriusXM, and I found myself tearing up now and then at ridiculously maudlin songs from my youth, when I was green in judgment and pretty much everything else. My emotions are all just below the surface after months of being pressed down. I’m gonna drop one old hippie song here. Take it with a grain of salt, sure, but maybe take it to heart nonetheless. Pace Kafka, sometimes even a maudlin little song can be “the axe for the frozen sea within us.”

I adore bats. Lived in Eastern Washington for a number of years before I saw my first here. I have a couple of very large patio umbrellas, and to get them raised you first pull the ropes enough to duck your head underneath to get a better grip to raise them the rest of the way. Early morning several years ago I ducked under, grabbed the ropes, looked at the fabric to check the angle and there was a bat about 6″ from my face. We looked at each other a bit, I ducked back out, and left the umbrella down all day. Opened the umbrella the next afternoon, and bat had decamped.

Had another bat encounter in an umbrella since, where I did not see the bat initially, and the poor thing riccoched around the yard until I lowered the umbrella again and it went back inside. Bought a bat house, and will install next year.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties are both reporting higher-than-expected turnouts as of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Roberto Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Elections Department, said 60,000 people had already cast their in-person vote. The county is expecting a total turnout of somewhere between 200,000 to 300,000 people.

In Broward County, the turnout was even stronger, where 66,000 people had voted, even though officials had estimated a total turnout of 100,000.

I’ve met Mr. Rendell, shook hands with him. Think he’s personally a good guy, did good job as Mayor and Governor.

    But would note:

1 – There are, roughly, 15 Pennsylvanians for every Delawarian. Measuring ‘ambitious politicians’ of the two states, the disparity is even greater.

2 – Most of the people of Delaware get their TV from the Philadelphia stations

3 – So while Ed was working his way up the cursus honorum, DA to US House to mayor to governor, whenever he heard the ‘DA-dah-dah-dah-dah-DUM-da-DUM’ of Action News*, he’d be highly likely to be hearing about ‘The Boy Wonder Senator from Delaware’

Methinks he be jealous, he’s been ‘put out to pasture’, Joe’s the likely next President. He’s human, old and crochety (lke me ;-) ).  Worse, and more influential, people to complain about, there are.
