@Dagaetch: Here’s what’s going on in Florida. The influence campaign run on and in Spanish language media in Miami-Dade appears to have worked on the Cuban and Venezuelan American communities. It was nasty, negative, and anti-Semitic. So while Biden will still win Miami-Dade, he’s not going to have the margin Clinton did in 2016. As of now Pinellas has swung and is swinging to Biden from Trump who won their in 2016. The panhandle will start reporting in 20 minutes, those counties should all go for Trump.
With Pinellas swinging to Biden, what you’re watching for is whether Biden runs up his results in the other Democratic counties – Broward, Palm Beach, Duval, Orange, Leon, Hillsborough – enough to compensate for the swing to Trump in Miami-Dade. It is also important that as of now, Trump is underperforming his margins in the counties he won in 2016. In Sumter, he’s off by about 2%, which is where the Villages is located. So Florida is going to be very, very, very, very tight. I expect the final result will be within 2% whomever wins. And I expect that if Biden pulls it out it will be by less than 2%.
This is why I’ve been saying for two months that unless Biden was leading in Florida in the final statewide polling by more than the margin of error, specifically by at least 6 if not 8 points, then he was going to loose Florida by 1 to 2%. I think it’s still possible Biden pulls Florida out, but if he does it is going to be a 1% win or less.

@Sebastian: I lived down there for two years, believe me it is tempting. They are unlike the other big Cuban American populations in the US, which are in Tampa, NJ, NY city, and Chicago.
The ones in Miami are the most reactionary, they are Bautistaites and Bautista was a Mussolini/Franco style fascist. They’re insular, clannish, and frankly mean.
There are Cuban Americans in Miami who have lived there for over 60 years and either still don’t speak English because they refuse to learn it or pretend they don’t speak it to force everyone else to learn Spanish. I spent two years there repeating the mantra: “I will not let them make me prejudiced towards them”.
Because the experience is the epitome of stereotypes both breakdown or are built up as the result of personal interactions.
I had a friend in grad school who was from Spain. We went somewhere once and the woman working the kiosk apparently said something to me in Spanish, I explained I didn’t speak that much Spanish, and she then said something else to me in Spanish. My friend then let her have it in proper Castillan Spanish, then switched to English for my benefit. The woman looked like my friend, also a woman, had kicked her in the crotch.
The most bigoted and prejudiced people in Miami are Cuban Americans and Orthodox Jews.
One day I went across the street from the university to grab something from one of the fast food places. The young woman working the counter was having trouble working the register because she spoke very limited English. A line formed, people were upset, they were complaining in English, Spanish, and a combo of how stupid she was, why was it taking so long, was she retarded, etc. She got more and more flustered. I lost my shit. At the top of my lungs I said: “How about all you English-Spanish speakers actually offer to help her, she’s clearly trying hard, she’s working, her English isn’t as good as any of yours and my Spanish isn’t good enough to help, so instead of making things worse, how about someone help her?” You could suddenly hear a pin drop in the place. The young woman looked at me and smiled, though I’m pretty sure she didn’t understand 2/3rds of what I said.
Had a similar problem with a Japanese exchange students on an internship I was asked to get from the airport, get checked in to housing, get her set up. When I took her over to HR at the university the Cuban American woman running the place started in on her because she wasn’t filling the forms out fast enough in English. I let her have it with both barrels. Told her flat out that if the student was from somewhere in Latin America, she’d never treat her this way, but because she’s Japanese it was okay. And I did it loud enough that dozens of people heard. By the time I got back to my department, where I was a grad assistant, I got told by my boss – a female professor – that 1) everyone had heard about the incident, 2) I did the right thing and she’d have loved to see it, but 3) I need to realize just how big a person I am and just how scary that can be when I get angry because apparently the woman was convinced I was going to kill her with my bare hands.
Good times…

I’m trying to be calm and just stick around here and occasionally check in on TPM. TPM is using the AP data and has Biden up by ~9% with over 50% of the votes counted in Ohio. Hovering over some of the major Democratic counties, it sure looks like there are a lot of Democratic votes yet to cast, and 9% is a nice lead for over %50 of the votes counted.
If we’re going to freak out over Florida, which was always questionable, can we have some guarded optimism about Ohio? At least for a few minutes?
ETA: I see I type way too slowly.

@guachi: you’re phrasing needs work if that’s the message you’re trying to convey…. all of your posts are being interpreted pretty much as “MELTDOWN MELTDOWN” or if you prefer Kevin Bacon mode from Animal House…
Kayla Rudbek
@Omnes Omnibus: I concur with taking a break.
guachi
@LuciaMia: No. I’m positive Biden will win Virginia. It’s just not being reflected in vote totals so it must be from projections.
WhatsMyNym
Some of you couldn’t survive the wait in Washington for local elections that are tight. The counties have until the 24th to finish counting. And our Republican SOS just emphasized that before the election (she is up for reelection as well).
Suzanne
@PsiFighter37: Cubans and Mexicans (and Central Americans) are not the same thing.
Elie
@OGLiberal:
I’m not sure how they have done the demographic breaks but with hispanics there are White hispanics and Black hispanics. Counting them may result in strange double counts as many Cuban hispanics in S Florida are white but Venesuelan hispanics who vote for Trump may consider themselves Black. It starts getting confusing so I wouldnt try to interpret too much tonight
different-church-lady
@Adam L Silverman: I dunno if I ever sufficiently expressed thanks for that effort. I had sent email directly to Cole letting him know I was on a news and internet embargo, but I assume it got lost in the doom.
guachi
@PsiFighter37: Is it Hispanic voters or just Cuban voters? Because Biden is looking strong in Texas and you can’t do that without Hispanic voters.
PsiFighter37
@Suzanne: I understand, but it sure seems like Biden is underperforming with Cubans (Florida) and Mexican-Americans (Texas). It seems like he is having a demographic-wide problem there. The thing that will (maybe) save us is that white suburban voters in more Latino-light states in the North will save the day.

I’m optimistic about Ohio. I’ve been waiting for the Midwestern states, tbh. As a Floridian, I never counted on FL, so there’s no disappointment there.

@Kent: Not to quibble much – I think (did not witness) that it was generally known there was oil up there. However, the big oil boom and the migration of folks from Oklahoma and Texas (according to my self-described okie relatives) definitely came after the Alaska constitution was written.
Pretty amazing that a guy like Ted Stevens could have been significantly involved in writing that document, given where he wound up politically.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Suzanne: and a big Venezuelan community in FL who don’t like the S word, and a state Democratic Party that has historically done very poorly in reaching out to the non-Cuban Latin community. Rick Scott made IIRC seven very showy trips to Puerto Rico after Maria, before the Senate vote. Bill Nelson thought being an astronaut was enough.
Adam L Silverman
@Quinerly: Fulton’s votes are delayed because a pipe burst at the State Farm Arena, which is where the tallying is being done. No votes were damaged, but it delayed the canvass of the ballots. They expect they’ll have it done tomorrow, but if Georgia is close, those votes will make the difference one way or the other.
Citizen Alan
@guachi: It is a fundamental (and almost universal) error of methodology to lump Cuban-Americans in with Latinos from Central America. The latter came here to escape repressive societies and build a better life for themselves. The former came here because the fascist they supported got overthrown by the communist they didn’t. I’m not terribly surprised that Cuban-Americans would embrace America’s Batista.
Emma from FL
@guachi: There is no such thing as a Hispanic vote. There are as many types of “Hispanics” as there are types of “Europeans.”
sdhays
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: If Dump is doing abnormally well in the rest of the state, you might be able to extrapolate something, but if he’s underperforming, I would think the answer is no.
Georgia is the one I really want to see as an “extra” because I want those two Senate seats too. I’m looking to the states that fucked us last time to do the right thing this time, and so far, I’m still cautiously optimistic.

@PsiFighter37: If I had to guess? Machismo. There is a strong subsection of the Tejano community that does not like gays, blacks, immigrants, or women who don’t know their place.

@sdhays:
How can you be up by minus 9?
Jerzy Russian
@WaterGirl: I think the tilde indicates “approximately”.
Emma from FL
@Citizen Alan: And fuck you. There are at least three waves of Cubans in Florida. Good luck attracting the younger ones with that attitude. I swear to Christ Democrats are as bad as Republicans with their easy judgments and disdainful opinions.
How does one use the pie filter, please?
Darkrose
@guachi: So Biden’s leading and y’all are freaking out? Aslan on a cracker.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@WaterGirl: the squiggly line usually means “approximately”
Kristine
@WaterGirl: That’s a tilde. Denotes “approximately”
Elie
@WaterGirl:
Its not minus but the “about” sign — so about 9%
sdhays
I’ve got to say, the map on TPM is looking pretty good for Biden in NC right now. 78% reporting with Biden ahead by 3% and it looks like some significant Democratic counties still with a lot to report.
ETA: Ugh – For North Carolina.
Aleta
@Yarrow: For example, NYT has “called it” for Biden but its count so far is 38% counted, 58% T and 40% Biden.
mousebumples
Black women have had our back for years. As a suburban white woman, I’m happy to try to do my part here. (not that my vote as an anti-Trumper has changed in 4 years … )
And thanks to Watergirl for the reminder about the pie filter. I can doomscroll on my own, on Twitter. I don’t need to see doom and gloom here either. It’s too soon to start getting all het up over fucking Florida.
RinaX
@sdhays:
For which state?
sdhays
@Elie: Yep. Approximately 9%.
Omnes Omnibus
@sdhays: What fucking state?
LuciaMia
@Darkrose: Because we all want Trump pounded into the ground like a tent peg!
sdhays
@Omnes Omnibus: North Carolina. Sorry!!
WaterGirl
@Jerzy Russian: Ah, to my eyes it looked like a minus sign! Thank you. :-)
My choice at the moment, because my laptop is low on power, is to be in the room where the light is either glaringly bright or not bright enough. I’m going with not bright enough, hence the tilde problem.

Really? For everything or just the reply comment?
(I used to comment at a blog where a front pager would often engage with the commentariat, say something stupid, and then delete his own comment once the masses piled on. It made reading the responses very interesting after a while, since you’d wonder what the heck he said to get that reaction.)
Adam L Silverman

That said, you are quite welcome. But if you do that again, email me, not Cole.

Well yeah. I spent 10 years in Alaska. Before the 1970s oil boom it was mostly fishermen and Native groups and a few pioneer areas. Fishermen back then were very Dem and unionized even in some fisheries like the halibut schooner fishery. The corporate canneries from Seattle were the arch enemies.
The oil boom is what changed the state. Also the expansion of the military bases because so many soldiers got stationed up there and then a lot of the redneck ones stayed around for the hunting and fishing
Ted Stevens was actually not that bad of a guy by today’s GOP standards.

@mdblanche: Exactly. I was feeling at best a little meh on Wednesday morning in 2018. It took weeks for the news of the election results to get as good as it got.
I know this. I know the results tonight are nonsense. First quarter with 8-1/2 innings left to go and just rounding the first turn (feel free to toss your own sports in there). Yet I keep obsessively updating. Trying to do other things but I’ve got 3 different vote tracker tabs up AND I DON’T BELIEVE ANY OF THEM!!!!
I need to have a serious talk with myself about self-discipline.
Don’t know what it means, but MSNBC only shows 141 EV total (80-61 Biden), while NPR and the New Yorker are showing 213 (119-94) and 211 (119-92). I guess MSNBC is being a little more prudent about wild-ass projections.
Edit: And MSNBC just changed to 89-54. Trump’s projected count went down. So much for any finality of those projections.

Even if Biden wins this race, I’ll still be ashamed of this goddamn country. 230,000 Americans died because of Trump’s unprecedented and unforgivable stupidity. He’s the dumbest, most corrupt, and most sadistic President in modern memory. Every day for the past 4 years, he or his surrogates have told a string of lies. On numerous occasions, he has incited violence among his supporters. He should be losing in an epic landslide. I only hope that every person who voted for this monster burns in Hell for eternity!

We’re up by minus 9, therefore panic is justified.

so far Joe is getting the turnout he needs in Cuyahoga Co, Ohio. But there is something weird going on around Dayton. Those counties NEVER vote blue.

Death, taxes and Milwaukee reporting voting results late are three things which can indubitably be counted on.

Tonight’s results are as meaningful as the Jump Program.
“What does that mean?”
“It doesn’t mean anything.”
It would be nice if Biden does end the night projected to win without the early votes. But mainly for schadenfreude purposes. That’s still not the election.
Yes, I’m largely talking to myself here.
