Anne Laurie found this excellent advice, that we thought would be great for sharing tonight:
Guide to upsetting election stories, from Steve Inskeep
Wait before sharing upsetting election stories.
People want to manipulate you.
What’s the source?
Is it a news org with editors?
Looks big on Twitter, but is it just a local incident?
Repeat #1. Anything truly important will still be there in an hour.
???
JeffreyW found gem, and excerpt from Gary Hart, that I thought was worth sharing:
A note from Gary Hart at Keep Our Republic
In a matter of hours, we will not only select a national leader, we will conduct a national referendum on our character as a people, a society, and a nation.
Like the Biblical prodigal son, we will come home from squandering our inheritance and seek redemption in the eyes of history and the world.
This election is about history, justice, and hope. It is about who we Americans truly are.
Mr. Heaney’s translation of this story of redemption is best known today for the passage beloved of many candidates, including this one, and now Joe Biden on the eve of the 2020 presidential election:
History says, Don’t hope
on this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
the longed for tidal wave
of justice can rise up,
and hope and history rhyme. This is where we find ourselves, longing for the tidal wave of justice, and praying that hope and history will once more rhyme again.
Anne Laurie expects to be away from the computer until later this evening. Seeing it as it unfolds could be nerve-wracking, but I’m not brave enough to walk away and find out the results all at once!

Florida actual votes will not be posted until 8:00 pm.

@dmsilev: mail and early votes. todays votes will trickle in. eta The votes now are projections by affiliation.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
Do the FL results include the early votes?
Despite my best intentions to pay no attention till 9 or 10 pm, I have a news program on screen. It’s MSNBC. Not watching or listening to the video, but I do have their interactive toy up on the screen.
They’re projecting only VT (Biden) and IN (Trump) so far. That’s based on 3% and 12% of the precincts, respectively.
Can we please remember the 101 million uncounted early and mail in votes before we start hyperventilating?
Baud
@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
We we’re just hoping for a Florida miracle so we could go to be early.
Immanentize
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I thought hyperventilating was your “thing”
PsiFighter37
@Emma from FL: Trump has 67% in The Villages, which Dave Wasserman had said would be good for Biden. But that is not the case when you look at Miami-Dade. Trump is on track to win by an even wider margin in 2020 v. 2016. Fucking Florida.
raven
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: Yes, the early votes are being reported.

and I say this will all due cynicism, the networks want to drag this out for as long as possible, they have a horse-race narrative they need to sell, so by-gum you’re gonna get it good and hard.

And I’m still expecting a chaos of court cases.

Trump is going to win Florida. You can book it. I figured Florida would be tough, but this is just a dismal showing. Embarrassing. So much for Bloomberg’s $100mm doing anything.

Emma from FL
@James E Powell: Miami-Dade has an unusual combination of Cuban and Venezuelan refugees, mostly ultraconservatives, plus a solid minority of rednecks.

I see AP with 79% reporting and Biden up 1.6%.
Yarrow
@Immanentize: Got ’em.
Winston
The by mail votes and early votes in Florida are gross numbers only sorted by party affiliation. They say nothing about the votes within. Like how many Gopees voted for Biden or Dems for Trump or how Independents actually split their votes. The PTB down here have been saying this all week. The actual votes cannot be released until the panhandle closes at 8 pm. You got 14 minutes to go.
Jinchi
@Subsole: He hasn’t lost Miami-Dade. But it sounds like he didn’t bank the large number of votes that Democrats typically do there.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
@Suzanne: MSNBC is showing Biden up 49.9% – 49.1% in FL based on 79% of the vote. 70,000 vote margin out of 9 million votes.
Edit: OK, I don’t know what these numbers are since FL polls are still open from discussion I’m reading up thread.
Just checked PA where polls are also still open. The MSNBC map shows 7 votes for Biden and 4 for Trump. Is that a poll of some producer’s watch party?
Mo MacArbie
Talking Points Memo has the AP maps. Biden’s up by 2 with 78% of the estimated vote in.
Baud
@Winston:
Wait, what? They’re not reporting actual votes? I think that’s wrong.
Quinerly
@Subsole: that’s how I read it. But nothing in yet in Panhandle. Different time zone.
John S.
@Quinerly: That’s a good read. And 150,000 votes lost by Biden in Miami Dade are being made up in 10,000 increments across multiple counties throughout the state where Trump is underperforming.

@guachi: not done yet, one trend looks less than optimal, but others more so… it appears that Biden is under performing in Miami-Dade but performing better elsewhere… have to simply wait and see…
Winston
@Baud: Read my post.
John S.
@Quinerly: Yes it is, but not a huge amount of votes in the panhandle. Trump is under in many other red counties, and he needs to perform or overperform in the panhandle.

Reminds me of 2016 when people said “wait and see” when it was clear Clinton wouldn’t win a particular state.
Just chalk Florida up as a loss and move on to tracking a different state. At least I can say I didn’t predict Biden would win Florida. Guess I’ll follow NC and GA now.
Baud

Folks – Biden is going to lose FL. It doesn’t matter that the vote isn’t done. He is underperforming in the most populous county in the state by 20%. He is over performing by far, far less elsewhere. That equals a loss. It also means Debbie Murcasal-Powell is probably toast as well.

But seriously, Biden may have lost Florida. It’s certainly not looking great. But until the votes are counted, nothing is certain. Or did everyone forget 2000 when the margin was literally a few hundred votes?

I am really heartened by early results in Texas: The Guardian reports Tarrant County over 2/3 counted and Trump is up by less than 1k votes there. That’s a real bad sign for him.

Panhandle coming in.
Emma from FL
@James E Powell: They always do. And they are never quite right. Florida started counting mail-in ballots this morning, I think. Question is are they sorting them by voter affiliation or is it an actual vote? Because I would be counted as an independent and my vote not entered into the actual count until it was actually read by the machines.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: They’ve got some kind of model that projects Biden is going to win Virginia based on how they think votes are distributed across the state, and how well he’s doing in the places where they have numbers. Since Virginia polled as a safe blue state this cycle (unlike 2016, where Clinton had to actually fight for it), they didn’t need to see much to be convinced there wasn’t an unusual red wave there. (I’ve watched Virginia for many years since I used to live there–the bluest votes always come in late, from NoVa.)
Personally, I think they shouldn’t be doing this. But it’s what they do.

@John S.: Even more than appreciable. Almost all of Trumps gains are in majority minority precincts in Florida and they are pretty big – Majority Black, +3; Majority Hispanic, +11; Majority Cuban, +11.
