Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

White supremacy is terrorism.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

He really is that stupid.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Optimism opens the door to great things.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Republicans in disarray!

Let’s Help Stacey Abrams & Fair Fight: Curing Ballots in GA

by WaterGirl|  November 5, 20208:59 am| 121 Comments

This post is in: Political Action, This Fight Is For Everything

FacebookTweetEmail

I saw this yesterday evening but I figured we were not quite mentally in a place to take action yet, but figured that we would be this morning.

Stacey Abrams asked for help – for people who can help cure ballots IN PERSON.

I’m also willing to bet that they could use some money toward that effort. Donate to Fair Fight

? GEORGIA: We need your help contacting voters across the state to ensure their votes are counted. Voters only have until THIS FRIDAY, November 6th – sign up to help today: https://t.co/uQuSMf6f58 1/2

— Fair Fight (@fairfightaction) November 4, 2020

Let’s help them Count Every Vote.

Update:  and help drag Perdue down to less than 50% + 1 so we can have a second run-off for Senate in Georgia.

She’s so inspiring. As I’ve seen said of her on Twitter, to have an election stolen from her and her response to be to make sure that never happens to anyone else… that’s definitely someone who subscribes to the campsite theory of life.

Biden is likely to take GA today (knock wood).

But the ballot cure can help Ossoff push Perdue into a run-off.

I think Perdue was at 50.2 % last night, but I might have that number wrong.

My rant for the day.  About 20% of black men voted for Trump.  WTF!!! How effin stupid are they?  I know that white males are stupid sacks of crap ( disclosure: I am a white male, but I am Jewish so Trump suppporters probably wouldn’t even consider me white), but now we have to add a portion f black males to that mix.  And apparently Hispanic males as a whole might have even favored Trump over Biden.  Maybe men shouldn’t be allowed to vote or hold office – no woman who could get elected could ever be as bad as Trump.

@WaterGirl: GA Election Chief, finally, at 8:15AM, corrected his earlier whopping error of number of ballots left to count to around 51K.

    Trump has a 18.5K lead.

Biden has been getting around 75% of the votes counted.

    You do the math. Okay, I will: 50,000 x .7 = 35,700!

    Stacy Abrams elects a President!

But you are right in your math, she needs help taking the Senate.

@MazeDancer: That math is pretty tight though.

If 18.5 K separate them, and Biden picks up 35K while Trump picks up 15K we’re at an optimistic scenario with Biden winning by ~1.5K.

I find it exasperating that Biden, currently winning nationally by 3.5 million votes, is considered only barely likely to win the election, and the multi-million voter edge he built in California is worth about as much as a coin toss in Nevada.

  32. 32.

    Felanius Kootea

    November 5, 2020 at 9:35 am

@SenyorDave: If this is based on Election Day exit poll data, the stats are skewed to those predisposed to vote for Trump.  The vast majority of early voters skewed a Biden and probably didn’t get polled in the same way.

That said, it is sad that there’s a substantial group of men of all races, especially white men without a college degree, who view Trump’s pathologies as strengths.

Bringing this forward.  Do any of you have any interest in a working meetup in Georgia??

If the Georgia Senate races come down to run-offs, (please, please, please — although an outright Dem win is always welcome, too), we could do a masked, contactless meetup down there.

It may be important to walk the neighborhoods and put informative info on the doors; talk up the importance of voting to those we find out in the yards and neighborhoods.

With the Spanberger campaign, we did contact-less lit drops to our voters’ doors — no knocking the door, so not a canvass, per se — but it was a pleasure to talk to several of those voters, when they turned out to be in the yard or came to the door once they saw us — usually to announce they had already voted!  Our voters rocked this year.

We can check for interest a little closer to the date.  I think being out there, and being visible supporters for Rev. Warnock and Jon Ossoff, could help turn out a few votes.

We can find out where we would be most appreciated with the lit-dropping.  Could be a smaller town or city.  Very likely to be suburbs.

[I was sad that COVID prevented our meetup in Maine to support Sara Gideon, and even sadder that g-damned furrowed brow Susan Collins won re-election.  Maine!]

Georgia headed for something close to a tie. Biden edge shrinking in Arizona and Trump edge shrinking in Pennsylvania. Still waiting on Nevada (currently Biden up 8,000).

It’s 2020. Life can’t be easy this year.

    Felanius Kootea

    November 5, 2020 at 9:43 am

@clay: I think she may have just built an “unpurgeable” Georgia voter base.  Kemp won with about 55,000 votes after incorrectly purging over 300,000 voters as GA Secretary of State, including over 150,000 who would have been more inclined to vote for Abrams. Many of those disenfranchised voters will never forget what he did.

She’s added way more voters this cycle and his handling of the coronavirus had him rated one of the worst/least trusted governors in the US.  If she wants to take him on in 2022, I think she has a great chance of winning.

If Biden wins and control of the Senate comes down to those two Georgia seats, GOP hopes of winning them/the majority will likely hinge on whether a defeated Trump would invest himself into turning out his voters in races where he’s not on the ballot and wins won’t benefit him— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) November 5, 2020

Latest numbers in Georgia have Perdue sitting right on 50%, the exact amount he needs to avoid a runoff, with remaining votes likely to nudge him just under. pic.twitter.com/YzRDNyBKhc— Kyle Cheney (@kyledcheney) November 5, 2020

Relevant to both the previous thread and this one, one of the ways Stacy Abrams has been building a multiracial coalition (building in the work of Dr. King and others) is by showing people that when politicians gain power by suppressing poor Black folks, they always turn it on all poor people.

@SenyorDave: Sadly, many of our fellow Jews, whether in the Trump Administration, serving the Trump legal team, donating heavily to Trump, using their media positions to pimp for Trump, aligning with white-nationalist fiends, supporting Israel’s horrific human-rights violations, doing anti-Covid Mask Wearing rallies, or terrorizing a BJ commentator on the Cuomo Bridge is not looking too good for us as a culture. Plus, I believe, black males skewed only 10 percent for Trump, not 20 percent. We have to clean our own house of “Jews Without Mercy,” as Adam Silverman noted, quoting a classic book from 1981 that foresaw this horror.

    @p.a.:

That said, it is sad that there’s a substantial group of men of all races, especially white men without a college degree, who view Trump’s pathologies as strengths.

Wonkette is covering some pretty awful viral video mixes of Biden that the GOP flooded FB and social media with. They targeted young BIPOC voters in swing states.  They are clips of Biden reading transcripts in hearings and are designed to make him look like a virulent racist douche. So we may want to give our young BIPOC male brethren a break here.  This kind of disinformation has worked pretty well on White people too.

    https://www.wonkette.com/gop-use-social-media-to-smear-biden-dems-as-racist-which-they-dont-believe-is-a-thing

trigger warning about these clips – This is an official proceeding (and also 1985) so no one would’ve thought to use the “n-word” euphemism, which didn’t yet exist. (I think that’s another thing we owe the O.J. Simpson trial.) Biden himself isn’t dropping the “n-word” like a presumptuous white character in a Quentin Tarantino film.

I will never forgive the GOP for these advertisements, and for the spanish-language compaigns in FL and Texas. (Those had Columbian involvement too, and maybe others.) These mean that we need not feel even a slight bit guilty about using ruthless electoral tactics. (Though truth in service of ruthlessness is best.)
