Heads Up On Soonergrunt

FacebookTweetEmail

Our own Soonergrunt had some sort of medical event this morning, possibly cardiac, and is in the hospital. According to his twitter feed he is in good hands and they are figuring out what if anything happened, and we’ll no more when he charges his phone and gets his tests done.

Just thought you all would want to know.

Fuck Donald Trump.

UPDATE by Dave

Dx "very mild heart attack"
I'm stable, more or less comfortable.
Will go home tomorrow. Follow up at VA.

Suspected cardiac event, AND in the hospital, is actually pretty good news, for those who don’t know. I mean, heart issues are *always* scary, there are fast, deadly, cardiac events, but there’s a lot that can be done, quickly, and easily, to move a lot of cardiac patients out of the woods, like putting in a stent, or starting blood thinners to bust clots.

Best wishes, Soonergrunt; get well soon.

I was actually on Twitter when he started complaining about pain in his chest and tasting copper and thinking it might be anxiety. I’ve experienced more than my share of cardiovascular events in the family so that immediately triggered my concern and I added to the pile on of contacts telling him he needed to see a doctor asap. It all happened almost exactly as the GA numbers were coming in so anxiety was a possibility but that’s really not something you want to risk. I’ve been low-key worrying about it all day and I’ve never even bloody met any of you in person, sheesh.

According to his latest reply 6m ago it was a “very mild heart attack”. JFC, talk about a close call. Just a reminder folks: if it matches a potential heart attack, treat it as one until told otherwise by a doctor.

Glad to read that it was mild and he will be going home tomorrow.  Good that he was able to get attention fast and be able to take the necessary steps from there toward a healthy heart.  My mom had a mild heart attack when she was 80.  She’s now 95. Never had another occurrence .

@trollhattan: A “mild” heart attack probably means there’s some damage to the heart muscle, but not enough that it was on a course to kill you *today*. Thing is, if you don’t get the problem fixed, you can keep accumulating damage to the heart, until there’s just too much damage (and/or scar tissue, I think).

Plus, if your heart isn’t functioning well, you will feel like *total* crap. Lots of people who’ve been feeling crappy for months or years get a stent and realize “holy crap, it’s like night and day!”

Heart issues should never be ignored for both of those reasons. Still, that’s also why I was cautiously optimistic above. With issues involving the heart, knowledge is power, and denial or wishful thinking are the most deadly of enemies.

    Soonergrunt

    November 6, 2020 at 3:26 pm

So, I’ve had a whole bunch of different stressors in my life the last couple of years. My agency has redone its IT twice. We’ve had problems with management breaking the law with respect to performance evaluations and other issues. I’ve been trying to unionize the workforce, and it’s been slow going but we’ve been making progress. Honestly, Donald Trump and his political appointees are the best recruiters for civil service unions you could ask for.

That and living with Corona, and the modifications we’ve all had to make, I haven’t been taking as good care of myself as I should and then watching all the recent stuff happen. So I got to the hospital right about the time they announced on MSNBC on Sirius XM that Georgia had flipped and Biden had about $900 lead and I briefly thought about going home but the sudden much worse sharp pain in my shoulder put an end to that thought.

No MSNBC in the hospital, but there is CNN and I’ve been able to keep up with everything happening. Talked to hospitalist, and dietitian, And we’ll talk to a cardiologist probably next week. Have to make some radical changes in my life including more exercise and reducing the levels of stress so I’m going to have to hand off the union organizing to one of my buddies. I can’t emphasize enough just how bad the Trump administration has been for the morale of the federal workforce.

I’m not going anywhere though. I’ll be goddamned if I check out before that son of a bitch leaves the White House.

@Roger Moore: Third this.  A drummer I work with just happened to mention to his buddy, as they were going home from a day of landscaping, that two fingers in his left hand “fell asleep”.

Buddy had survived a heart attack and made him drive directly to the ER and that saved his life.  All five coronary arteries 99%+ blocked.   Emergency bypass.  Eight weeks later he was playing drums again.

Life lesson there, your health takes priority over everything else, cause if you go tits up, everything else goes with it.  Make the changes you need to make, stick with them and stick around these parts.

And follow the medic’s orders for rehab and all.

Take care of yourself, and I hope your VA clinic/hospital is as good as mine. Have had a mild one myself and cardio was and is great.

@Roger Moore: We claim anybody who shows an affiliation to the state. Carl Hubbell? Born and raised in Oklahoma and is buried there, even though he retired to Arizona. So we claim him. Warren Spahn? Came from Buffalo but moved to Oklahoma when he was pitching for Milwaukee, and lived the rest of his life and is buried in Oklahoma. So we claim him, too. Willie Stargell? Born in Oklahoma, so we claim him even though he considered North Carolina his home. Soonergrunt’s handle is more than enough to clear that low bar.

And remember, a “mild heart attack” is one that happens to somebody else. Take care of yourself, SG, and do as the doctors and nurses say you should do.

Every hour or so my mind drifts off the vote counts and reflects upon the historic moment that Kamala Harris represents for our nation. And I think about watching that video of Joe Biden calling the senator who gave him a hard time in the debates and saying “Are you ready to go to work?”

    We are the good guys.

It’s probably good for lots of us to read about the signs today and what you say about stress. We think we know but …  knowing isn’t the same as acting on signs.

Anyway, thank you and I’m so happy you’re OK.

I’m sorry you have to put up with all the stress. It sure would be nice if all your hard work could allow you to breathe a little easier knowing your doing the right thing, but I guess that’s not how it works when you’re vested in something. Our family doc has a little lab in his office suite, so the blood draw is analyzed right there. But some tests take longer than others, so we usually get a phone call a week or so later on to inform us that we’re completely normal. Not perfectly, just completely. Don’t know if there’s a big difference there or not.

It is good to have been seeing the same doctor for pushing 40 years now. He knows us both pretty well. Also, we know him, totally eccentric guy. Goofy, but a really good doctor.
