Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

No Justins, No Peace

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

No one could have predicted…

In my day, never was longer.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

It’s all fun when you think your side is WINNING and you’re leading the parade. It’s *not* so fun when Dear Leader is sobbing in his bunker, and also the cops facing you down don’t seem to be taking it in that good white-nationalist ‘patriotic’ spirit…

Gonna invite comparisons to "the Brooks Brothers riot," but the difference between protesting a count that could reverse a <1000 vote lead and asking to stop a count where you're down 38,000 votes is pretty big https://t.co/Wv5i1AeZXx

I’m posting it again because it has all the voting & counting information in a nice format.

This website has vote differential, votes remaining, changes, and rates of change for all the states that are still counting.

Their source is the same as NYT’s.

@HumboldtBlue: [Full disclosure: I am not David Anderson, nor even Richard Mayhew *Grin*]  I don’t know if you really wanna hear this, but …. the American healthcare sector is about 10% of the economy.  So it’s a reasonable guess, that each of us must pay about 10% of our income in insurance and out-of-pocket payments.  That’s a lot of money, and I’m not going to defend it: other advanced countries provide better outcomes for less money expended.  We have a lot of deadweight loss in our healthcare system, starting with armies of dueling administrators and bureaucrats.

Is your health insurance an Obamacare-compliant plan?  I’m surprised that you could have an $8k deductible for such a plan: I thought they were all much lower.

Interesting development. Today the Trump campaign sent out a mailer to their PA list asking them to turn in their absentee ballot ASAP.

Now, there’s no way these could count because they won’t be postmarked by election day.

So either they are eyeing a legal strategy to extend counting and hope they can get enough votes in to make up the gap (never gonna happen), or, lacking for voter fraud, they’re asking their own voters to commit fraud so they can use that as an argument to throw out the mail-in ballots.

At a minimum, it’s a blatant attempt at voter fraud. The emails have been verified as authentic. They went out just before he spoke today.

One thing that bugs me is why the national Trump campaign got a court order to be able to enter processing centers and observe the count.

I am a lawyer, but I haven’t seen the court order you are referring to. I did read about one where the court denied the request to stop counting and the parties agreed to let more people in to observe.

I am guessing that the “we need more observers” argument was a pretext to try to get the counting stopped – even if for only a while – to get headlines COURT ORDERS COUNTING STOPPED! and cause mass hysteria. I am also guessing the state/county officials said, look, we can let X more people in, but we need them to keep out of our way. So the court said, great, you worked it out. Bye now.

@patroclus: There’s 4.5M uncounted ballots in CA (and we will accept mail-in postmarked by election day for another 10 days) and they’re breaking 2:1 for Biden, so his vote advantage should grow by 1.5M just out of CA.

@James E Powell: I think it’s a bit more nefarious than that. It’s clearly a stalling tactic, but if you pair it up with the call for PA GOPs to submit their mail in ballots NOW, I think they’re buying time to fabricate a voter fraud claim by burning their own voters.

@Quinerly: I think it’s the latter too. Lacking any evidence of voter fraud, they will commit voter fraud and poison the well, and then argue to the judge that the whole effort is corrupt.

If this is the strategy, they’ve signed on a bunch of people to go to prison on a hell of a longshot.

@Kent: The really difficult thing in 20 years will be explaining to our grandchildren how we were ever ruled by these morons.

    This whole era reminds me of one of my fav Rush songs – “Farewell to Kings” the song is pretty apt;
When they turn the pages of history
When these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow?
    We turned our gaze
From the castles in the distance
    Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance
    Cities full of hatred
    Fear and lies
    Withered hearts
    And cruel, tormented eyes
    Scheming demons
    Dressed in kingly guise
    Beating down the multitude
    And scoffing at the wise
    The hypocrites are slandering
    The sacred halls of truth
    Ancient nobles showering
    Their bitterness on youth
    Can’t we find
The minds that made us strong?
    Oh, can’t we learn
    To feel what’s right and what’s wrong? What’s wrong…

    @Luciamia:

Calm down, please. The stress is bad for you.

So what if it takes a week. Or more. I’m enjoying the periodic count updates that keep pushing Biden closer to victory. And every one of those updates probably feels like another spike driven into Trump’s head.

Biden can’t take the oath until January. It’s probably best to keep the Thief-in-Chief occupied with Twitter and his lawsuits. Once he’s lost for sure, he’ll be able to concentrate on destroying as much as he can before they drag him, kicking and screaming, from the White House.

In Washington State, we had a gubernatorial race (2004) that ended after what seemed like forever with the Democrat, Christine Gregoire, ahead by 129 votes (out of almost 2.75 million votes). But she won and the length of the count didn’t matter at all.

It’s worth noting that in that election in 2004 and in a number of states this election the Libertarian candidates’ votes were more than enough to defeat the Democratic candidate, whether Gregoire or Biden. Third party votes can cut both ways. It’s possible that rank order voting would put Trump back in the White House. (I haven’t checked enough races to know that, but looking at the totals in N.Carolina, Georgia, and PA is scary. The Libertarian candidate has 41,000+, 61,000+, and 76,000+ votes respectively. Wouldn’t the majority of those go to the GOP candidate?)

    @janesays:

It could be a counting race because Nevada and Arizona together give Biden 270 and a seat behind the desk in the Oval Office for four years! All the AP is waiting for is Nevada, where Clark County (Democratic) has many votes outstanding.

And, of course, nothing will be certain until the Barrett Court rules on Trump’s 140 million lawsuits (one for each vote, more or less).

And Trump and Steven Miller will probably cobble together a new, improved mathematical system that invalidates 3 out of every 3 Democratic votes, giving Trump 100% of the popular vote and 6,000+ Electoral College votes. In short, the greatest landslide in the history of the universe. Naturally, the SCOTUS will suddenly rule in Trump’s favor with no written opinions and an unsigned ruling delivered anonymously at 3AM to Mitch McConnell’s office. The envelope will reek of cheap Scotch.

Just realized something.  Since GA went blue and it looks like both of their Senate races are going to runoffs, the odds of a CoVID relief bill passing in the lame duck just went way up.

Control of the Senate (50+VP/50) hinges on who wins those runoffs.

Blocking a relief bill would be a great way for the GOP to make sure it loses both of those races.

Katy Tur said Thursday evening that she would be telling us about Pennsylvania in the early hours on Friday, I think she said 4-5 am, and I assume that’s EST if she’s not in California or Arizona but it’s that time right now. .

@JPL: The USSC will do with the ACA as it wills. If the right-wing majority is smart, they’ll push the decision past the runoffs.

The “defund the police” issue is already baked in.

Only CoVID-19 relief is in play right now. Maybe cramming in a few judges too (which won’t help them).

@Martin: In the event that anyone actually takes them up on it (and I doubt many will), they won’t go to prison.  This scheme is one of the dumber ones they’ve tried.

Any Pennsylvania GOPer who still has an unreturned absentee ballot (likely not many, given the “ALL THE MAIL VOTEZ R FRAAAUUUDDSS!” screaming this summer) can’t mail it, since:

    a.  They’d be postmarked after election day, and

    b.  They’d never get there in time anyway, since the receipt deadline is today

So they’d have to hand-deliver them to their local BoE.  And if they do that, the BoE staff will either say “Sorry, we can’t take this,” or they’ll take it and not count it.

I mean MAYBE some of these folks voted in-person on election day, and they’re now trying to submit mail ballots.  But that won’t work, both for all the reasons I’ve noted above and because county election boards know who voted on election day, and any absentee ballot submitted now by someone who did would immediately get flagged and tossed.

This is even more cockamamie than most of their cockamamie schemes.

    @Morzer:

McConnell might tell Trump to sign the bill or face a very rapid impeachment/application of the 25th Amendment.

Not in this plane of reality he won’t.

    Morzer

    November 6, 2020 at 6:25 am

@SFAW: I am not so sure about that.  Trump is about to be in an extremely weak position and will need McConnell much more than McConnell needs him.  I am sure McConnell wouldn’t want to make the threat – but he can also see that he can’t just sit on his hands and be confident of winning the Georgia runoffs.
