Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

T R E 4 5 O N

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Bark louder, little dog.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

…and what a woman she is!
Happy Birthday, Kamala!

She posted this after the election was called:

This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started.pic.twitter.com/Bb9JZpggLN

— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) November 7, 2020

And I was doing okay until this one:

So proud of you. ❤️❤️???? pic.twitter.com/Orb1ISe0dU

— Doug Emhoff (@DouglasEmhoff) November 7, 2020

and I really, really want to see Joe do a victory lap in his green Corvette:

The bullshit media narrative has already taken hold.

Trump got to wreck the country for 4 years, only care about his supporters and shit all over Democrats. But now Biden has to reach across the aisle and magically heal the country.

We all knew this would happen, but it still sucks. Democrats are the adults, and constantly get held to a higher standard than the GOP toddlers.

Trump failed to Make America White Again, but he did what he could to seal our borders, so now in the midst of a pandemic there’s a shortage of qualified doctors and nurses. He also got to pick who became a White House Intern: there was a photo of them a year or two ago and 90% were white males, presumably the children of Republican members of Congress. So much winning whining!

I kid, I’ll fix something nice. We do have crab dip on hand, that would go with champagne!!

I knew this was coming pretty soon, so glad the agony is over. Trump will be in court for the next 2.7 months, to no avail. Judges need facts, NOT ALLEGATIONS to decide cases. Sharpies used to throw out ballots in AZ, when the ballot scanner manufacturer recommended using sharpies… Hilarious if not so dangerous and malicious.

Yesterday I watched the video of the Michigan Judge tell Trump’s lawyer Thor over and over that his affidavit was hearsay, or perhaps even double hearsay, and couldn’t be allowed into his case. Was really funny. Thor was not competent to argue a parking ticket.

    2. In between classes, Jill can fix the Rose Garden
    3. Draw up the judicial reform commission
    4. Get a stimulus passed

Yet nobody was like Trump has to reach across the isle. Nobody said W had to. When they win it’s always “elections have consequences” and when we win it’s like, “well, you only sorta kinda won.”

Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada. Why are we looking at these states? Why are they important? Why are we watching a man in Gap khakis yell at a map into the night? Did the map do something wrong? It is red in some places and blue in other places. It seems like the red and the blue are fighting each other by doing math? I have to confess that with the big orange idiot taking up so much space in my head, I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about what an upgrade Harris is going to be over Mike Pence. The VP office may be “a bucket of warm piss” as Garner put it, but Pence was definitely able to use it to promote his brand of fundamentalism.

Considering how crucial the suppression of women is to that fundamentalism, replacing him with Harris is nearly as sweet as getting rid of Trump himself. This is the rational side of my brain talking. I don’t think I’ll fully appreciate it for a little while longer.

Jill Biden is also going to be a big upgrade over the soon to be third ex-Trump. And as for Joe himself, having a man in charge who is surrounded by smart, tough women and not afraid to listen to them and defer to them when necessary is going to be a big upgrade over the macho tough-guy blustering we’ve all seen over the last four years. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

ETA US Senate is a better gig than CA governor. Ask any CA governor.

But you do have to live back east, which a lot of folks would rather avoid.

Back at the beginning….Joe Biden was not my first pick for President. It was Kamala Harris.

Whilst I was disappointed that she wasn’t selected for the top job, I was suitably impressed by how Biden turned his candidacy around. And when he picked Harris to be his VP, I was overjoyed. This was the right ticket!

I didn’t even realize how stressed out I have been these last few months years.  Since Tuesday I have been completely useless, trying to get things done at work and around the house but just going through the motions.  It was like confidence and hope with a shit-ton of dread seething just below the surface.  When my wife came out on the porch and said they called it It I said “They sure took their fucking time” and went back to the yard work.

Came in to grab a bite, sat down, watched that America video and the dam burst… I can’t stop crying.

    @John S.:

The bullshit media narrative has already taken hold.

People need to relax and stop accepting or worrying about the media.

Trump got to wreck the country for 4 years, only care about his supporters and shit all over Democrats. But now Biden has to reach across the aisle and magically heal the country.

Biden will determine his approach to the GOP in Congress.

In my ideal world, he will challenge McConnell to put aside obstructionism. But we will see what happens.

(I’m pretty sure efgoldman introduced them a few times at the Festival of Bands at Faneuil Hall.) It was sometimes hard to put up with all that over the past few years. And, of course, this summer they weren’t performing at all; they’ve been on hiatus entirely.

    @Suzanne:

Rod Dreher is terrified of being blacklisted. LMMFAOOOOOOO.

Rod Dreher wrote an entire book about how it’s all going to be just like totalitarianism and living behind the Iron Curtain, but light, because some FSU immigrants said so.

And by light, he means some people disapprove of discriminating against LGBTQ people and this has job related consequences.  So he’s happy because it’s great for his book sales.

…but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk yesterday with a woman I’ll call “Clarissa,” whose stories were so good that I’m weaving them into the book’s narrative.

Clarissa is a college professor who emigrated to the US from Russia as a young woman, a few years after the fall of the Soviet Union. She is yet another ex-Soviet bloc person who is extremely anxious about the emergence of soft totalitarianism here… By the way, here is a link to Clarissa’s blog, if you’re interested. Here’s a post from a previous blog of hers, about her father’s life as a closeted Christian in the USSR.
