Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The willow is too close to the house.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Republicans in disarray!

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

And just because it doesn’t seem to have got as much notice as it might have, that sanctimonious weasel Mike “Dense” Pence is going to be replaced by Senator and former AG Kamala Devi Harris, tyvm, and that also is a cause for joy.

We will be thinking about McConnell soon enough if Dems can’t take the 2 Georgia seats. And even if we do, will have to worry about a GOP which has same agenda as Trump, but much smarter about imposing it on the country.

But, hey, that’s life. We need to enjoy some time off from the battle. I’m going to forget everything politically unpleasant for a few weeks. Assuming Trumpsters don’t reveal any tricks up their sleeves.

@jl: 6 of Obama’s 8 years were with a GOP Congress. And every moment of it was still better than the best day of the Trump presidency. Yes, there won’t be lots of big things getting done.  But it will still be so much better with Biden and Harris and endless things that can be done with executive power.  Thank Bill Barr for expanding executive power.

In response to the ballot question “Should Puerto Rico be admitted immediately into the union as a state?,” 52% of voters said yes, while 48% said no. It was the sixth time Puerto Ricans voted on the issue, with its residents overwhelmingly supporting the measure in 2012 and 2017.

    Uncle Cosmo

    November 7, 2020 at 9:16 pm

@Adam L Silverman: McConnell has not yet secured the Senate majority for two more years. Though he has definitely started counting his chickens before they’ve hatched.

My understanding is that the Democrats have to win both Georgia runofffs to get to 50 Senators and control via VPOTUS’s tiebreakers. (Which probability I judge at 1 in 8 – and that’s being optimistic.)

Am I missing something here? Please let me know. Because if I’m not, Yertle McTurtle can warm up both his middle fingers & practice in front of a portrait of Biden, sticking them in his face.

Nothing that can’t be done by executive order will get done for the next two years – (ACA replacement? Fuck you in stereo, Yertle says to Uncle Joe). Anything that might be done by EO is odds-on to be overturned ASAP by the Extreme Court. Even if the 2022 Senate map turns out to be as favorable as it looks, the House is odds-on to flip, yielding two more years of gridlock.

Don’t misunderstand, I am pleased to contemplate Orangecandyass being hauled out of the White House in handcuffs. But beyond that,

THE 2020 ELECTIONS HAVE BEEN A TOTAL FUCKING DISASTER FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

They weren’t much of a victory, let along a “famous” one – they were a stay of execution for American democracy. They pushed back the earliest date of the fascist takeover of the USA to January 20, 2025.**  But that’s all.

And all you teary-with-joy types celebrating President Uncle Joe are imbeciles. Which. after you’ve exhausted every other possibility, you will all finally figure out, to your enormous distress and fulminating fury, in typical “progressive” fashion:  a few days or weeks or months after it’s too goddamned late to do anything about it.

** Maybe 2029 if the Democratic POTUS can win reelection. Good luck with that. Obama started out with a bigger victory and sizeable majorities in both houses of Congress & yet barely squeaked out a win in 2012.

It’s just that for at least 24 if not 72 hours, there was a real chance that Trump was going to hold onto power in addition to that. The votes were falling in a way where maybe Biden would lose AZ and fall just short of PA/GA.

    November 7, 2020 at 9:33 pm

@Uncle Cosmo: There are four senate seats not yet decided for the next Congress: NC, Alaska, and the 2 Georgia seats. Right now Cal Cunningham is loosing in NC, but NC hasn’t finished their count/canvass and they won’t update numbers, due to a court order, until 12 NOV. So we have no actual idea what is going on there. Alaska, which takes about three weeks to count all of their ballots because a lot have to come in from remote location. They’ve counted around half of them so far and the Democratic candidate, Dr. Al Gross, has indicated that he thinks he will win when they’re all counted. And we’ve got the two GA seats going to a run off. As of right now their are 48 Democratic/Independents who caucus with the Democrats/Democratic Senators elect and 48 Republican/Republican Senators elect. This leaves the four open seats. If the Democrats can take any two of those four seats – NC, Alaska, or the 2 in Georgia – then it is a 50-50 Senate. In a 50-50 Senate the Vice President breaks all ties as the President of the Senate and the party of the Vice President therefore has the majority. If the Democrats can win any 2 of the 4 open seats, then Chuck Schumer will be majority leader not Mitch McConnell.

ETA: And I guarantee you that Biden and Harris and Schumer will be offering Murkowski anything she wants to go independent and caucus with the Democrats. Try to recreate what they did with Arlen Spencer.

@NotMax: I’m not holding my breath. I think Gross is still a possibility and Warnock is as well. Ossoff ran a much better campaign than I expected, but I’m not sure we’d be lucky enough to take both Georgia seats. Though I have no idea how someone votes for Warnock and Perdue.

@Punchy:    Job One for the right has always been STOP THE HIPPIES.  (Or whoever you like, but who it is is actually of secondary importance.)  If stopping the hippies means giving Trump a pass on his COVID response, well, they don’t like it, but, etc.  They really do live in an alternate reality, and as long as we keep holding them at arm’s length, that will continue.  They know our attitude towards them, and that’s precisely why they backed Trump.

    @Adam L Silverman:

i’m going to enjoy watching the players and coaches of the WNBA team that Loeffler co-owns working for Warnock.

@dm:  What happened with state legislatures?  Did the Dems lose some?  I would’ve thought we’d learned from 2010.  (I also thought that having the winning Presidential candidate would help the Dems.)

    @Uncle Cosmo: Go Fuck Yourself.

I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have expressed my frustration at your stupidity, doomcasting, and adolescent contrariness that way.  What I should have said was:

    GO FUCK YOURSELF!

We have just won a historic victory over the forces of darkness.  You may have an overwhelming desire to piss on someone’s joy, but please do not share it with us.

We all know that, right now, the Democrats do not control the Senate.  We also know that there is a decent chance to get to 50 with Alaska and two seats in GA.  We also know that that may not happen, and that Mitch McConnell may do everything in his power to defeat Democratic legislation, in which case it may be two years before positive legislation can be enacted.  But a President is not powerless, and, from day one, Biden and Harris will, among other things, work to get Covid under control; work to restore our international alliances, treaties, and trade deals; work to reform and restore our civil service; and work to get the economy going again.  They don’t need Republican say so to do that.

So, again, in case you missed my point: GO FUCK YOURSELF!
