    For the event, Biden emerged from a large black SUV wearing aviator shades and a large black mask. He kept it on while laying a wreath of cream roses. And he kept the mask on while talking — “It feels good to be out of my house,” he said — only removing it when he was safely back in the vehicle.
    Trump and his allies were quick to mock Biden and his mask, but the Democrat embraced the image, changing his social media avatar to a picture of him staring into the camera while wearing dark sunglasses and the black face covering.

    I wrote that a lot in 2017, particularly during the fight over the ACA – here, on blogs I frequent, in messages to friends. It was a reminder that the American people as a whole did not support Donald Trump, and that there was power in the collective voice of those people.

    I first really felt that at the Women’s March, the first full day of Trump’s Presidency. The memory of that event still gives me chills; it was so big in D.C. that they literally couldn’t hold the march itself, and there were millions of other people marching in other places, large and small, across the country and the world. It wasn’t the number of people that impressed me so much, though. It was the determination, the feeling that everyone knew this was the beginning of the work, not the end, that there was much more to do.

    And the number of people who answered that call was incredible. First, there were groups like Indivisible that helped people understand what they could do to help. There were the protests against the Muslim ban, which were spontaneous and again happened all over the country. That was followed by the sustained effort to save the Affordable Care Act, so intense and so widespread that Representatives and Senators not only couldn’t keep up with the calls and emails, but that Republicans also started cancelling town halls because they knew they would be faced with united, organized, opposition in packed rooms. The ACA was saved by a single vote.

    Then there are the elections. People who’d never been active before jumped in. I remember reading one post-mortem article on the incredible 2017 election in Virginia, which talked about how campaigns had more volunteers than they’d hoped for in their wildest dreams, to the point that they weren’t making choices about priorities because they could do *everything* they wanted to do. That resulted in a sweep of the statewide offices (by big margins), and an unprecedented swing in the House of Delegates. The same thing happened in 2018 in the midterms, with the Democrats gaining 40 seats in the House. Both times, turnout among Republicans actually was higher than usual, but the Democrats swamped them.

    And this year: On the fundraising side, Biden raised an incredible amount of money, but equally important, by the end of September he had 2.2 million more donors than Trump. This was a campaign driven by small donations, by regular people who thought it was important. Once again, the number of volunteers and activists was incredible, and it went down to the end – I’ve seen several reports of people running text banks and phone banks who had so many volunteers that they completely finished their call lists and had to resort to follow-up calling and texting to give the volunteers something useful to do.

    Republican wins often come because Republicans are more committed to the cause. Their positions are, in general, unpopular (at this point, the stories about focus groups literally not believing summaries of Republican positions are a cliché), but they donate, volunteer, and vote faithfully. This election, Republicans were just as committed as before, maybe even more so. And yet Joe Biden and Kamala Harris out-fundraised them, are going to have at least 5 million more votes, and are going to the White House.

    In other words, there are more of us than there are of them.

    We need to savor this moment and remember it. Remember what comes from commitment and hard work. Remember why that matters – it’s how the country moves forward. Yet we also have to remember what happens when we don’t do those things because the forces that want to push our country backward aren’t going away, and only continued work and commitment will keep that from happening.

    So the work continues. Right now, it means doing what we can to win the runoffs in Georgia so the Senate will flip to the Democrats. There are two strong candidates there, and they definitely can win, but they need our help. There will be more to do next year, the year after, and all the years after that.

    Ted Kennedy, in a valedictory for his failed Presidential campaign at the 1980 Democratic Convention, ended the greatest speech of his career this way: “The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.” The election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris gives us a chance to keep doing the work that matters for causes that matter, and to bring the dream closer to reality.

    We can do it, because there are more of us than there are of them.

    Separate from that, let me just say that the BJ community has been a huge part of getting through the last 4 years from me.  (Yes, even the people who despaired, who inspired me to fight back against that feeling.)  And I know that everyone here gets that the fight is not over, never will be over, but always is worth fighting.  Thank you all for that.

    I saw the tweet in the original post and your note here about ‘YMCA’ and it reminded me…Election Day morning when I was working as an outside observer, there was this one young-ish guy who pulled up, windows down, ‘YMCA’ blasting.

    He stayed in his car until the song was completely done, stepped out, made sure to have his mask on…below his nose (as in, he actually had it on right at first, then tugged it down)…and then strode oh-so-angrily into the polling place.

    I can’t imagine what it’s like to live like that but whew, good for him. The stress and strain of having to follow all those weird MAGAt signaling rules will hopefully take years off of his life.

    I was working today, took a break and read all about it. My office flies the Stars &Stripes right over our front door. I took it down from it’s mount and just walked up and down the parking lot, right by busy Hwy. 17 in Brunswick Co. NC, one fist raised and letting those colors fly. The breeze was perfect.     I gave my Trader Joe’s friend a ride from work way out to Reston (near Dulles) for a weekend pet-sitting gig. She said her store (in Clarendon, Arlington) was way busy today and liquor sales (beer, wine, bubbly) were through the roof. Definitely a celebratory mood among both staff and customers.

    I just finished a small pizza from the Lost Dog Café and am working my way through a crowler of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. I’m in for the evening and catching up on the news. Cheers!

    I’m reminded of what happened a few years ago on a job. The film crew was from Denver, and I was the only local. The Patriots were playing the Broncos that night. They spent the entire day boasting about how the Broncos were going to whup my team.

    The Patriots were down 21 points by halftime but came back to win in overtime.

    The next morning I come down and they’re all looking at me sheepishly waiting for the payback. And I drove them absolutely up the wall by… smirking but not saying a single damn word about it!

    From out here in the lands that remain Under The Shadow it doesn’t look entirely impossible that Trump will respond to his defeat by lashing out at the people who, a) let him down the most and, b) he’s actually in a position to hurt, by announcing he’s going to run for President again in 2024 (for the grift, naturally) under the banner of his own personalised political party.

    Obviously he might not, and it might not even work, but it’s entirely in line with his self-regarding instinct for survival to make the most of his supporters’ angry disillusionment by trying pull them with him and away from the ‘loser’ Republican brand. Mitt Romney might find that he’s very much at home in the Party that Trump leaves behind, but only because the real nutters have moved even further right and taken their votes with them.

    Fingers crossed.

    I think GWB is well into dementia by now. Laura was trying to keep him from acting nuts the last couple of times we saw W, but wasn’t having much luck.
