By now everyone has probably heard about the Wayne County (MI) Board Members who voted against certifying the ballots. Well one of their fellow board members was having none of it. Rumor has it, this might be why they voted a second time and certified them.
Hey guys,
Please Watch @NedStaebler — a Wayne County Board Member of Canvassers stuff in a locker @HartmannDude and @monicaspalmer — the two members that refused to certify the ballots for the county…pic.twitter.com/iGl3LSf3Sw

HOLY REVERSALS, BATMAN!
Following a wave of outrage, Wayne County just voted unanimously to certify the results of the election!!!!

This made my night a little brighter.

Pointed out by folks on Twitter: The GOP wanted to certify Wayne County minus Detroit. Detroit has 39% of the total county population. Meaning, they only wanted 3/5 of the votes to count.

Ned – whom I’ve met a couple of times – absolutely brings it. Holy shit.

Will Rudy be jetting in tomorrow to argue in court that the first result of the vote is sacrosanct and can never be reversed?

Honestly, this was the ultimate Karen move of 2020.
These white suburbanites thought they could just assert their privilege to disenfranchise a major American city and throw the election to the loser. You have to be living in a pretty impervious bubble of lies and bullshit to think you can do that and get away with it. But disenfranchising half a million people on national TV is a lot bigger task than being a racist bitch to a black birdwatcher.
These people need to be driven from public life and sent into hiding. Seriously. They need to be made and example of. So that any other small time GOP coup plotters know what they are biting off if they try the same.
These people are like the velociraptors who are always probing the electric fence looking for any weakness. They need to be watched constantly and have their asses zapped with 100,000 volts every time they try.
Ken
And that’s 16 EV the GOP will not see for another 20 years.
Feathers
Apparently the Dana Newell, the AG, filed an emergency suit to force them to certify or face contempt charges.
Sebastian
@Kent:
Nah, let’s investigate if they coordinated. Because then it’s a conspiracy.
Let’s start throwing the book at these assholes. Nixon famously looked at what are the things black folks and hippies are doing and started going zero tolerance on that. Objectively, he was only prosecuting drugs but we know he was locking up black people.
Well, how about we go hard after fraud. Seems to be a favorite white activity.
gratuitous
Progress of a sort. Perhaps some day Republicans will actually do the right thing in the first place instead of taking an extended detour through Bigotland and being publicly humiliated for their racism.

Damn Ned that’s being an ally
Mai Naem mobile
I am kind of worried about these voter fraud allegations because I used to think that most of the GOP went along with this stuff to make their base happy but didn’t actially believe it themselves. Now I see these GOP pols who are true believers. Its like the Teabagger Alex Jones NJs who won the lowly school board, precinct committee man gigs have moved up the chain to the big truly consequential jobs now.

Just watch Trump to claim that the republicans were intimidated by a mob or something.
Matt McIrvin
@Mai Naem mobile: It’s the same thing that happens in cults like Scientology. The first generation of leaders are in on the grift. The second generation were raised in the cult and they’re true believers. It means they’re harder to dissuade. But it also means they’re fools, so they make strategic mistakes.
Kent
@Sebastian: Well sure. Hit them every way you can. Conspiracy and fraud might be hard to prove in a court. But meanwhile drive them out of MI and into hiding would be a good first step.
We need to make examples of people who plot to destroy democracy in such a racist fashion. This needs to be the new third rail of American politics. Trump is in a secret service bubble of wealth and privilege. But most of his minions are not. They live ordinary pathetic racist lives. They need to be rooted out and forced to live in fear of ever fucking with our democracy.
TEL
Holy cannoli I need a cigarette after that righteous and very well-deserved rant. It matches the absolute rage I’ve been feeling about what the republican party has been doing since the election.
GrannyMC
It was inevitable that someone started dredging through the social media activity of these two clowns, and oh boy are these a couple of doozies.
Kent
@Mai Naem mobile: It’s the new racism. Trump is just showing them all how they can let their racist free flag fly and not be called on it. They need to be called out for what it is. Racism pure and simple in its most vile form. When you try to disenfranchise Milwaukee, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. That is the only word for it.
Miss Bianca
@tom: Yeah, right on. Made me proud to be from Wayne County again, where these other two bozos were making me writhe with shame and fury!

I just finished reading about how Trump fired the DHS official who said that the election was fair and now I come to Balloon Juice and see this. Reminds me of the scene in the movie Lincoln when the legislator had to decide how he would vote and how he would choose to be remembered by history.
Trump is obviously coming apart at the mental seams, and he is trying to pull the country down with him. The GOP leadership could end this nonsense by quietly, but firmly abandoning Trump.
But they won’t, and will be damned along with him.
But damn, Trump is determined to turn this farce into a pivotal moment in history, as Republican officials decide if their loyalty is to their country or to a lunatic.
This is a hell of a year, 2020. Strap in tight, because the ride is not over yet.

Trump is pretty much in self-mocking mode as he fires people left and right, desperately trying to find loyalists who will continue to fight this futile war against the inevitable.
Yeah, this is the farce version of Hitler in his bunker during the final days. The foolish GOP should put a stop to this.
I don’t know what to do about Trump voters in the future. But right now, we slowed them down by stopping Trump. That will have to do for now.

The thing is I don’t know what these two people thought they would achieve by refusing to certify the results.
Did they think if they started it off other Republicans on Election Boards would follow?
Was it just performative. Raising their profile as Trump loyalists to help their career in Republican politics?
Did they stop to think for one second about the shitstorm such an unprecedented action would kick off among voters who were being told their votes didn’t count? Or about the media attention it would draw nationally?
Or, like their Leader, was it just spite because they lost?
All I can say is, President Biden can reach across the aisle as much as he wants but there will be no one there to grasp his hand, and I hope he realises this whatever he says in public. And Democrats should beat any media talking head about the head with these and the other attempts to delegitimise Biden’s election anytime they whine about Democrats not trying hard enough to be bipartisan.
Matt McIrvin
@Sloane Ranger: Right now, at the tops of the parties, we’ve got the Democrats acting as best they can as if they’ve won a normal victory and calmly proceeding with as much of a presidential transition as they can manage (which, I should add, is the right thing for them to do), while the Republicans rant and rail and scream about election theft and Trump tries to foment a revolution.
If that’s all you pay attention to, and especially if you’re in the right-wing media bubble, you might well think that if you try to save Trump with one weird procedural trick, the Democrats will just calmly roll over. “Coach, I’ve checked the rules… There’s nothing in the book that says a mule can’t play football!”
Keep in mind that even Democrats have spent decades complaining to themselves that they’re a bunch of wimps and the Republicans are way better at working the refs.
So they have to find out the hard way what happens if you actually give it a shot.
Bruce K
I had a dream the other day, in which President Biden invites McConnell to the White House to discuss what it’ll take for his Attorney General nominee to get hearings before the Senate, and on hearing McConnell’s demands, says “thank you” and the headlines the next day are about McConnell being taken from the White House in handcuffs and facing charges of bribery, extortion, and obstruction of justice…

@TaMara (HFG):
More of this plz. First I want to encourage everyone who can to look at the twitter feed. there were several people who made similar public statements – lots of white folks who clearly understand what it means to show up and be an ally. I was proud of them and so happy they took the time to make those statements and be examples for how you make a forceful statement defending the rights of all Americans to vote.
Unfortunately, I also was dismayed this morning when I related this story to a colleague who tut-tutted them for being impolite by publicly shaming them into doing their jobs. I know so many people who claim to be woke but immediately jump to tone policing those who are seeking justice. Instead of being outraged at the injustice that continues unabated they are dropping to their fainting coaches and fanning themselves with the latest op ed from David Brooks about why we can’t just all get along. I am so sick of the overly polite NPR social set, I could vomit.
Kudos to those in MI who decided that standing for justice was more important than politely keeping the piece with their racist white neighbors.
Alex
@tom: Ned really shone here! He’s a bog-standard Democrat from a family that’s been established in Washtenaw County for a long time, and we need more folks like that to put themselves out there like this instead of trying to be all polite and bipartisan. Too many Ann Arbor folks are already asking how we can reconcile with Republicans before they have even conceded the election
The OP is incorrect, though. Ned is not a member of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers; he was giving a public comment and served as an observer at the Wayne Co absent voter counting boards at the TCF Center (Cobo Hall). He’s not a radical Marxist as the Gateway Pundit folks are trying to paint him, either– it just goes to show how distorted their worldview is.
