Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Fight them, without becoming them!

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Republicans do not trust women.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

When I was faster i was always behind.

My world is going to get busier so I might miss a few of these, but I thought it was important to hear from Biden today, if only to counter having to listen to the orange disease over the weekend.

BTW – impressive press conference from GA SOS office today.

Business leaders urge Congress to certify Biden win

Almost 200 of the country’s top business leaders urged Congress to certify the electoral results for President-elect Joe Biden in a letter Monday, arguing that “attempts to thwart or delay this process run counter to the essential tenets of our democracy.”

The letter marked the business community’s most significant push yet to ensure President Trump’s efforts to overturn the November election are unsuccessful. Signers included a wide array of executives of Fortune 500 companies, from the leaders of banks, airlines, investment firms, pharmaceutical companies, professional sports leagues, real estate conglomerates, top law firms and media companies.

The partnership — the major advocacy and political influence arm for the business community in New York — counts many of the city’s top firms as its members. Among the signers included leaders of Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Pfizer, the National Basketball Association, Mastercard, Blackstone Group, BlackRock, Lyft, Deloitte, Warby Parker, Moody’s, WeWork, Ernst & Young, JetBlue, MetLife, Condé Nast, the Carlyle Group, Hearst, American Express, Saks Fifth Avenue, Price Waterhouse Cooper and Deutsche Bank, along with 150 more.

Others who signed include some of New York’s top private equity and real estate figures including Henry Kravis, Rob Speyer, William Rudin and Laurence Fink.

I hope they lift Trump’s passport, and that of his adult spawn (and Jared).  Flight risks extraordinaire.

Wonder how quickly NY State can indict on at least one or two charges; they have time to bring more later.

Would be hilarious if it was Georgia that stopped Trump from traveling, but that’s not going to happen.

    What if Trump won’t go?

What if he sits down at the Resolute Desk and dares someone to physically remove him? What if he occupies a couch in the residence? The harm here is real, beyond how ridiculous the performance would look to the rest of the world: A functional president requires a functioning office.

Former senior government agency heads and Secret Service detail leaders pushed to think through this scenario offered several plausible solutions. “I think I’d have a conversation with the chief of staff, and then the family, Ivanka and the other kids and say, ‘It’s going to be your job to make sure he’s gone,’” a former senior Secret Service official said.

Another possibility: “When the staff leaves on January 19, don’t let them back into the complex the next day. He can’t do anything without his staff.”

An isolated president, in other words, would be more susceptible to just throwing in the towel.

“I really think it would be up the Republican Party if he were to try something like that,” a second former official said. “The Service and the military would just not want to get involved. It’s not our role.” (Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said there is “zero” role for troops to play in the election or its aftermath.)

A movie ending is not in the cards, either, because the Secret Service’s Presidential Protective Division (PPD) immediately transfers its resources to the incoming president on Jan. 20. In other words, there won’t be a “Biden detail” in a shooting war with the PPD because the PPD becomes the Biden detail the moment the president is inaugurated.

And no one should worry about loyalties, either. The Secret Service’s deputy director, Leonza Newsome III, was the head of Biden’s vice-presidential detail during the Obama administration.

But what would happen if Trump simply said no?

“Well, I guess by law he would be a trespasser,” a former Secret Service agent said. “We’d have to escort him out.”

    January 4, 2021 at 5:10 pm

@Litlebritdifrnt:  I was also going to say food bank. If that’s not a pressing need where you are, an organization that helps refugees locally probably could really use it – already-marginalized people in legally precarious situations are really hurting now.

We are also fortunate enough not to need it, and I don’t even know if we’ll get any this time. Last time we got $600 and donated it to the local food bank immediately.

Fresno Bee, editorial (Devin Nunes’ major local daily):

Does Devin Nunes deserve the Medal of Freedom given by President Trump? Facts say no

… But facts show that far from being a hero, as Trump portrays him, Nunes has actually harmed the nation by fueling the bitter partisan divide that has splintered America’s political system.

They address his misleading work on the intelligence committees, the fact that he does not apparently actually read the stuff that crosses his desk, which does not stop him from mischaracterizing and weaponizing it, (a fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution took him to task for that, in an article in The Atlantic, which they link) and his penchant for lawsuits he ends up dropping. (One against the Bee, for defamation.)

They have two lovely subheads, in full caps and bolded.

    UNDESERVING OF MEDAL
    EMPTY LAWSUITS

They suggest he actually deserves the Presidential Medal of Fealty.

So:  the DC police have just arrested one of the leaders of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, once he set his little boots inside the city again.  And:  in arresting him, they found 2 high capacity ammo magazines.  I wonder if he is now in more trouble than burning a BLM banner.

So:  he might be in custody for a while.  I hope so.

WaPost:  The leader of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, was arrested by D.C. police late Monday afternoon on a warrant charging him with burning a Black Lives Matter banner taken from a historic Black church during a demonstration last month, officials said.

Police stopped a vehicle Tarrio had been in shortly after it entered the District, said Dustin Sternbeck, a D.C. police spokesman. He said it is believed Tarrio, who lives in Miami, was coming into the District from the airport.

Sternbeck said Tarrio is charged with one misdemeanor count of destruction of property in connection with the Dec. 12 burning of a banner stolen from Asbury United Methodist Church.

Tarrio had told the Washington Post last month that he was among those who burned the banner.

Police said Tarrio, who was in custody Monday evening, also was charged with two counts of possession of high capacity ammunition feeding devices, which is a legal term for a firearms magazine that allows guns to hold additional bullets. The devices were found during the arrest, police said.

    ….

Authorities had described the burning of the banner as a potential hate crime. Sternbeck said it would be up to prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in the District to determine whether to file hate charges, which could increase the penalty.

Tarrio said last month in an interview with The Washington Post he would plead guilty to destruction of property, pay the church the cost of the banner and surrender to authorities if a criminal charge was filed.  [He also said]  he was not motivated by race, religion or political ideology, but because he believes the Black Lives Matter movement “has terrorized the citizens of this country.”

Like others above, my first take on this was “bullshit!” but then I reread the Jane Mayer piece in the New Yorker right after the election – the one that quoted Mary Trump about the narcissistic injury T. would suffer if he lost – and it also included this tidbit:

It turns out that, in 2016, Trump in fact made plans to leave the United States right after the vote. … Scaramucci told me that Trump and virtually everyone in his circle had expected Hillary Clinton to win. According to Scaramucci, as he and Trump milled around Trump Tower [awaiting the returns], Trump asked him, “What are you doing tomorrow?” When Scaramucci said that he had no plans, Trump confided that he had ordered his private plane to be readied for takeoff at John F. Kennedy International Airport, so that the next morning he could fly to Scotland, to play golf at his Turnberry resort.

… Mary Trump, like Res, suspects that her uncle is considering leaving the U.S. if he loses the election

However, Loeffler, because she is filling a seat vacated by the retirement of Sen. The NG deployment approval by the DoD in the CNN story only covers using the D.C. National guard. Looking at their history on wikipedia they are essentially supplementing local police and federal parks services in this role. While Adam last night flagged a potential issue if other states had hand picked NG deployed, this seems to be fairly routine for large D.C. “protest events”.

“The Pentagon on Monday reportedly approved the deployment of D.C. National Guard forces to the nation’s capital this week for pro-Trump protests centered around the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.”

The only problem is that as a Dem I have to think of relevant experience instead of whoever would look good.  She doesn’t seem to have prosecutorial experience which would be badly needed if you want some legit successful prosecutions of Trumpers. Remember they did that with Obama’s management OT rules and Elaine Chao got some safety  trucking stuff rolled back that was passed towards the end of the Obama admin. The bigger issue is going to be getting rid of the political Trumpers who’ve been hired in civil service positions with civil service protections.
