Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Petty moves from a petty man.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Let there be snark.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

I’ve come down with a little cold- chills, body ache, sinus headache, etc. I’ll be so glad when this pandemic is over so I can just be sick and not worried that I have killed someone.

“Enjoying” a little theraflu with some bee pollen and a teaspoon of honey and then I am gonna nap.

We’re tuning in to CNN at 10PM EST tonight to catch the two-hour report on Trump’s attempted coup against the Constitution. He egged on the violent mob with an evil speech using language copied from the works of Hitler, one of the few authors he ever read.

We have ten days until this fascist bastard is gone and I have no confidence that he and his henchmen aren’t plotting further damage to the country.

I posted this downstairs but wanted to post it to an open thread.  A 15 year veteran of the Capitol police who was on scene at the siege of the Capitol on Wednesday, took his own life yesterday. The department is calling it a “line-of-duty casualty.”

We had our annual pre-VA legislature brunch event in Fairfax this morning. Gerry Connolly (VA-11) spoke about the assault on the Capitol, and covered a lot of the same material as in this talk:

Video: Rep. @GerryConnolly’s Dramatic Account of the Assault on the Capitol (“I’m determined. I’m not afraid. I will not be intimidated. And I hope you won’t either. We will stand up for the best of what America represents and we will call out its worst”) https://t.co/X8zKH66JfO
    — Blue Virginia (@bluevirginia) January 10, 2021

And my rep, Don Beyer, spoke (as he has online) about how Kevin McCarthy should resign for continuing to support the election lies even after the attack, pointing out that as awful as they are, Hawley and Cruz are back-benchers in the Senate, but McCarthy is the GOP leader in the House.

Is my searching borked, or are there no commentariat opines on the Schwarzenegger video in recent threads here?

The sword part was over the top Hollywood, but the rest of it was, I though, remarkably good. His talking about how post-war, his dad was frequently drunk and abusive living through the regrets and bitterness of serving the Reich was pretty danged unusual from a politician.

I felt like his calling out that “We need public servants that serve something larger than their own power” was a pretty apt diagnostic of the Cruzs, Rubios and Hawleys of this country.

I don’t have any great love for how Arnold ran CA. But he is doing what needs to be done to not have the right half of this country just go totally Lord of the Flies.

I saw the Ahhnold video, and was duly impressed. I hope he’s right about the sword analogy.  It depends on how deep a dive we do to find/expel everyone involved in the coup attempt.  Arnold compares it to a tempered sword; I prefer a debrade-the-wound.

I hope you feel better soon, John.  My husband tested positive on the 4th for Covid and has been isolating since Monday night away from my son and me.  It’s been tough, especially because we talked to our doctor, and she thinks I may have had it first- I had a high fever for three days right before the New Year. However, I tested negative 3 times over an 8 day period, (including right in the middle of my symptoms and the same day my husband tested positive), so we have to act as though I’ve not had it, which means isolation from him until the 14th.

I’ve had fatigue and a low-level temperature for several days after the fever broke; it’s still not back to normal, but trending downwards.  And the fatigue is a little less every day.

The only place I can think of where I could have caught it was my son’s pediatric dentist- I wasn’t unmasked for even a moment, but the patients were ( it had been over a year since my son had been seen and he had so much plaque I’m lucky there weren’t cavities, too).  It just sucks; this thing is really, really contagious.

That said, there’s plenty of things we can catch that make us miserable but aren’t Covid, and I will send all the good thoughts that you just have one of the annoying other things.

And given the stooges Trump installed in the weeks before this despicable attempt, it is certainly possible that non-uniform Pentagon people were obstructing the provision of aid prior to that call. Investigations need to be painstaking, detailed and thorough.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: Studio Ghibli’s Pom Poko, currently available on HBO Max, is about a group of Tanuki (Japanese raccoon-dogs) who use their fabulously large testicles by stretching out their scrotum and using them to fly. The Tanuki are battling developers who want to destroy the forest where they live. They even kill some of the workmen.

It is based on a creature from Japanese folklore. Westerners are probably more familiar with the shapeshifting foxes, because female ones will seduce men and lead them astray, which offers wide possibilities for artistically tasteful, yet racy films. The raccoon-dogs (more closely related to dogs, but tend to be called raccoons in English) have more transformative ability, but mostly involving their enormous testicles, which they use to make humans look foolish. Not as many sexy movie possibilities.

Do not know of any Danish super penis folklore.

@gbbalto: Thank you- it looks he’s coming through with very mild symptoms, which is a relief.  And, on the good side, it means we won’t be sweating about when he’ll be able to get vaccinated as he’ll probably have immunity for some months.  (It’s the reason I hope my doc is right and I did have it even though I tested negative).  Obviously we’re still masking up and washing our hands and social distancing and will until the CDC says otherwise, but we’re feeling a great deal of gratitude for his mild case.  It’s just luck; you never know.  I know so many people here have had rougher times with this freaking virus.

Also, that Black officer in the video being chased up the stairs by white insurgents wasn’t running away — he saw the doors to the Senate chambers were open and deliberately made himself bait to draw the mob away.

He was the one person standing between democracy and the rule of tyrants. If the traitors had succeeded in taking hostages, we undoubtedly would been watching live-streamed executions of senators and others.

I hope (probably in vain) that one of the results of this is that anyone whose threat assessment puts “pro-police/anti-police” above “do they have guns” is summarily fired. Blue Cross Blue Shield has pledged to give no money to the campaigns of members of Congress who voted to challenge the election results. Commerce Bank, Marriott, and Citibank are also pledging that.

What’s important about this is both the recognition that in terms of PR, association with these individuals is toxic, but also it’s a formal recognition of the 147 legislators that challenged the results. No weaseling out for the ones that tried to keep their head down.

Not joking, Johnny — I know THREE people who claimed to have “sinus infections” that quickly thereafter tested +. Seriously, keep vigilant for taste/smell, cuz that’ll go next if indeed yer +.

Enh, like most respiratory infections, this has very variable symptoms. I’m just getting over COVID, and in my case I felt a little sick for 2 days, and then the next day my fever went up to 103, and stayed at 100-102 *even with aspirin and ibuprofen* for 3 days after that. Then it “broke” and started going between normal and slightly elevated (99.x) for a few more days, and since then it’s been normal. I didn’t lose my sense of smell and taste until *after* the fever broke and went down to that variably slightly elevated level.

Edit: FWIW, I get a lot of sinus infections, and for the first two days I was thinking “maybe this is a sinus infection”. In my case I figured it was *likely* COVID because my husband was already running a high fever without serious nasal symptoms with *his* later-proved-COVID case, and right now, there is very little flu to cause that.

and while they didn’t say WHY he resigned earlier,

The Wapo article on him leaving early included the information that another officer had died which I thought may be related.

Former U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund stepped down from his post on Friday, days earlier than he said would following a deadly breach of the Capitol complex by a mob supporting President Trump.

    …….

On Sunday, Capitol Police announced the death of another officer, Howard Liebengood, 51, who was off-duty when he died. The agency’s statement did not release a cause or date of death of Liebengood, who had been with the department since April 2005.

Liebengood was at the Capitol on Wednesday, according to two law enforcement officials with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. His death was a suicide, these officials said. There were no further details immediately available.

That’s why I buy index funds in my retirement accounts and don’t mess around with this sort of thing.  It’s not always rational.  And it might take longer than you can afford to be proven right.

@Kent: Shorting any stock is not for amateurs, you have to be able balance the losses with the rest of your portfolio.

I’d stay away from Tesla and their products.

@cain: I don’t get why there would be any Trump supporters left at the FBI. He did nothing but bash them for 4 years.

    @Damned_at_Random:

If Barr wasn’t a complete fucking loon she could have made a lot of people smile by doing a reverse Sarah Cooper and putting her voice onto videos of Trump speechifying. Perfect whiny timbre. But, yeah, loon.

@Martin: You know what would really work? If they said they wouldn’t donate to the RSCC unless they can make sure the money doesn’t go to those seven seditious Senators. Moscow Mitch would have them out of the caucus, if not the Senate completely, before the clock strikes the next hour. Because no fundraising is no power for Mitch.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym:

Speaking of internet rabbit holes, it turned out my wife had never heard of Randy Rainbow when I pulled up his post-insurrection “Sedition”.

I’m just glad I’m not the only person who thought of that one! Randy Rainbow will have dashed it off in his sleep, I am sure, while I was wrestling with line 1!

@patrick II: The recent runup in Tesla was because they were added to the S&P500, so everyone who has an S&P500 index fund had to buy their shares.

Some of the rise before that had to be in anticipation.

    The rise before that, dunno.

He’s been getting lots of good press with his rockets, etc., and still leads the electric car race – for now.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

So when they make the feature length film on this 5-10 years from now, who plays Trump?

    Boris Karloff? Too good looking…

    Peter Lorre? Nope, too small

Vincent Price? Nope, can’t do  a Staten Island accent.

    I dunno…

ETA: Who was the guy who dressed up in a clown suit to kill youngsters? John Wayne Gacy? Him!!

    @Damned_at_Random:

I’d like to know exactly what went on in the Pentagon during the insurrection. Was the delay in approving deployment on the MD national guard just a product of confusion- or an intentional stall? Were some Trump appointees shut down by the professional military\\

When you ask “Were some Trump appointees shut down by the professional military?” the answer is “No, some professional military folks were shut down by Trump appointees!”

    You got it exactly backwards!!!

Jeff Daniels, in an interview about his role as Comey, said he would really like to play Trump at some point.
