My new thing, at least for the past few months, has been sugar free popsicles. Well, they’re not really sugar free, but at only 30 calories a pop, I can eat three of them and be less than 1/4 of the calories of a recommended serving of ice cream. And as an established widebody and lover of ice cream, let me tell you, I never followed those recommendations.
So that is the big news going on in my life.
Juliaoth
Are you losing weight? If I could get jesse to quit sugar that would be easy.
Poe Larity
Man cannot live by popsicles alone.
In other news, did you know the Scarlet Witch has two big sisters? Mary-Kate and Ashley. Made me feel old, so I thought I’d share that.
Ascap_scab
Is there such a thing as “a recommended serving of ice cream”?
RaflW
I’ve become a fan of the inexpensive Kroger ice cream sandwiches. Of course the key is eating just one, but I’ve been doing pretty well on that. They’re 140 calories per, and I have never, ever sat down to a dish of scoop-your-own ice cream that is 140 calorie size. Ever.
Oh, and I discovered fairly fast that it’s best to eat the strawberry end of the neapolitan flavor first. The chocolate end is surprisingly richly chocolate, and then the vanilla and strawberry seem muted. I’ve sort of built a game of trying to get four bites of each flavor – yes those are small bites. It helps me not just gobble and want a second sandwich.

@Ascap_scab: Is there such a thing as “a recommended serving of ice cream”?
On one of my earlier kicks of wanting ice cream but not going nuts, I read how many servings were in an old-fashioned ‘brick’ type half gallon (when they were actually 64 oz, so you know this was a while ago) I traced out a grid on the surface of the open carton for the 16 (!) servings on the nutrition lable.
F-that. I decided 8 servings was OK. Within a few weeks I was averaging about 4 or 5 servings per half gallon, so that experiment ended with having no ice cream in the house for quite a while. Oh well.
John Revolta
@Ascap_scab: Sure!
“I recommend serving ice cream.” Easy peasy!

@Ascap_scab:
I recommend that a half-gallon of Blue Belle Moo-lenium crunch contains three servings (I can’t finish it in two).

We are all adults here at Balloon Juice After Dark.
Eat as much ice cream as you want. Do other stuff with it.
Just leave Gelato alone.

I don’t even remember when I last had ice cream. My big snack thing these past few weeks has been Planters lightly salted peanuts.
The PM is about to get Malaysia’s first official Covid-19 vaccination. He’s going through the process now. It’s live on YouTube.

Manchin’s daughter was called out by Tanden about gouging insulin users. Just might explain a lot.
NotMax
Thought you had some sort of home ice cream doohickey. Can’t reduce the calories in the homemade stuff? Or use it to make sorbet?
mattH
@mattH:
EpiPens, not insulin. Might just be bedtime.

” recommended serving of ice cream ”
Servings of ice cream are recommended? Good to know.
How about waffles?
Edit: Cole needs to post where he get his nutritional info. I find the ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to the newsletter.

@mattH:
From the story linked in the tweet:
‘ In fact, Fortune, in a tough profile, once described her career as being full of “ethically messy mishaps and public relations gaffes.” At least two involve her own father, Sen. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va. ‘
A commie rag like Fortune can say it, but Tanden can’t?

I’m going off ice cream for a while. Florida Navel Oranges are in season, right now. Bought a 8 lb bag from Walmart on this weeks delivery, for $3.50. Sweet and juicy and the peel seems to want to just fly off. About 75 calories per, I’d guess. Heavy on fiber and Vit C.

@jl
They serve as handy delivery vehicles.

If you can get a low-cal ice cream recipe and the requisite ingredients, you can make low-cal ice cream in your home gizmo.
… And it’s official. PM Muhyiddin Yassin has just had his first jab, and now he’s about to spend 15 minutes being monitored in case the Pfizer vaccine causes him to grow a tail.

My after dinner treat for the past week or so has been Costco cheesecake, I didn’t get any on my b-day so I got one for myself.

All of it, Katie.

the tail doesn’t show up for 1 to 28 hours after the second shot.
I have no idea when the microchip’s “go live”.

The wake up password is “chips ahoy.”

the basic premise of this post is mind-blowing. that it is mind-blowing is also disturbing. ice cream is a legit obsession, and popsicles do not seem like they would substitute (maybe a creamsicle). however, the health considerations cannot be ignored. messing with me late at night cole…
lurker
@Poe Larity: always tend to forget scarlet witch is not one of the twins. all three were after my time, but the whole mary-kate and ashley thing, once I learned of its existence, was really disturbing.

Day 4.
I’m on day 4 and have been getting a buzzing in my ear the entire day. It might be from the antenna for the locator beacon. Of course it could just be my tinnitus….

seems pretty clear this is the right answer:
suppose it depends on who is doing the recommending. getting hungry…

@Ruckus: Probably the fruit bat sonar kicking in. You’ll learn how to use it soon enough. Day four after the first shot is going great for me. Just learning how to fly, and flapped down to a local cave. Sleeping while hanging upside down in my bedroom just doesn’t feel right. Cave will be better after the fur grows in a little more.
lurker
@Amir Khalid: do not tell my extended family about this. the number of my relatives who have expressed fascination with the idea of having a tail (typically when observing a dog or cat) boggles the mind. they need to get vaccinated, but we should not get their hopes up…
jl
@lurker: Bats don’t have much of a tail. Wouldn’t be able to tell.

Everybody gouges insulin users. If a pharma company were to treat insulin users fairly, the CEO’s magic decoder ring would be taken away. It’s especially bad if you’re on Medicare.
I’m a Type 2. I get gouged all day, every day. I’m lucky to be well enough off that I’ll never have to choose between buying insulin and buying food, but I know people who face that every month.
And no, I don’t feel guilty about owning Lilly stock. I get back a small portion of what they gouge out of me, and I get to have an annual symbolic protest, voting no on all the directors.

They go live after the first shot. I had my first shot, and I’m starting to put it all together:

Duuuuuh! Now I crave soft cookes, candy.dots.coms, and I’m starting to think that Bill Gates is Q. Think about it. I-B-M. I be M? How many letter ’til Q? Four! NOPQ! 4. And then March 4? I’m thinking it ain’t T**** that’s gonna be inaugurated on March 4, it’s Gates! Q himself.
Oh yeah, the chip ain’t bad. My internet service has greatly improved, and the updates are only slightly annoying.

Ibarra! Mexican hot chocolate with vanilla ice cream. Life is good.
Avoid aspartame, there’s a reason it’s banned everywhere but here.
MomSense
I had a scoop of B&J’s mint chocolate cookie after dinner. Delicious.
Barbara
I use a scale to measure the ice cream into a small coffee cup by weight, and if that sounds obsessive, my hubby and I have been eating ice cream almost every night since the pandemic started.
Central Planning
@?BillinGlendaleCA: My recent Costco treat has been chocolate chip cookie dough. Found a tub that can be eaten raw. Usually two teaspoon scoops unless the top of the cookie dough is not level, and then I just HAVE to smooth it out by eating the offending cookie dough.

I break up raspberry popsicles in plain yogurt. Yum!

I have a coworker with Type 1 and he had to go off one of the surgically installed monitors/injectors, and watching him get back on self-injected, because his insurance wouldn’t cover it. Itwas so scary. More than once we watched him hurriedly drink some soda to keep from passing out. Criminal.

The only time I’ve eaten a half-gallon of ice cream at a sitting…
Abcessed tooth announced its presence Friday afternoon. Spent weekend fasting, called dentist Monday morn, frist available appointment next afternoon. Tooth pulled, sat till bleeding stopped, drove to supermarket, acquired carton of mint chocolate chip, onsumed sitting in car in parking lot

Just yesterday I was remembering the Holy Fruta phase you (John Cole) went through several years (decades?) ago. I was wandering through the section of the grocery store where I used to find those kinds of treats (“Novelties” in the ‘hood Safeway).
Here’s my complaint: banana flavored versions have pretty much disappeared. I used to be able to get a creamy popsicle with bits of banana in it. Yummy and not too many calories (but much more than 30 per pop). The mouth feel was excellent. But all I can find now is the old banana popsicles, which are now called pop ices. *sigh
Uncle Cosmo
In fact it was EpiPens, not insulin – as stated right up front in the tweet you linked.
(sigh) I guess it’s too much to ask people who post here to get their facts correct beforehand.
Uncle Cosmo
No, but you can grow pine. (Or pine fjor the fjords.)
Or willow. But consult Ser Cole lest you put it too close to the house….

@Ten Bears: So where is aspartame banned?

I was late editing, so I replied to myself in the next post. Sorry
