Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

T R E 4 5 O N

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

I really should read my own blog.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The words do not have to be perfect.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

In my day, never was longer.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Come on, man.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Let’s finish the job.

President Biden just announced new actions to ramp up vaccinations. That means by April 19, 90% of adults in the U.S. will be eligible for vaccination and 90% of Americans will have a vaccination site within 5 miles of where they live.

Ohio here. Getting an appointment is still a challenge. Married into a big closeknit familly, so everyone banging away on the internet is getting us signed up. What do normal people do?

My dad’s nursing home aide could have been first in line but she was wary. Now she can’t get an appointment anywhere. She isn’t tech savvy. I might suck her into the family typing pool this week. Spouse wants grandkids first but wtf she is in her fifties and taking care of my dad in a nursing home through the whole pandemic.

OC new cases up slightly from <100 to 150 or more. Guess the next week or two will tell. CA cases overall down 7% for the week, and on the WaPo page I follow we are tied with Arkansas for the lowest state. Hospitalizations still low and going down steadily. Haven’t heard much about variants – has been hard to find info on the two homegrown ones or if the serious ones from the UK, So. Africa, or Brazil are here or not. Latest vaccine data is from 3/20 because there are technical issues with the reporting. Ugh.

Getting my first shot today (Team Moderna!) at the same place my husband got his first shot a few weeks ago. You don’t even have to get out of the car, he tells me. You just drive up into a beach tent thingie when it’s your turn, and bam, they give you a shot and tell you to park in a designated area for 15 minutes. During that time, if you start to feel weird, you’re supposed to honk your horn for help!

The 0-case day in Israel is an error. From the Israeli Ministry of Health’s own COVID dashboard, the correct number was 229. That day was also the start of Passover, following a Shabbat, so it was most likely a reporting delay.

In any case it’s especially important to look at the 7-day moving average in Israel because there is a regular cyclical weekly fluctuation.

All that said, we’re definitely heading in the right direction. If we can avoid a surge due to Passover we’ll be very nearly golden.

Several relatives who live in Michigan said they had been vaccinated in Ohio recently because it was easier to get appointments there and no one checked residency. I wonder if the easiest places are the ones with the highest proportion of COVID-19 deniers and anti-vaxxers. Judging by the face mask count, Toledo has plenty.

Monday in the UK we had 4654 new cases but this number will still be affected by the weekend reporting delay. This is an increase from Sunday of about 800. After rising for several days, the rolling 7-day average is showing a decline for the 2nd day running. It is now down by 4.2%. We will have to see if this continues when the reports delayed during the weekend start coming in. The R number is now between 0.7 – 0.9 as of 26 March. New cases by nation,

    England – 4112 (up @950)

    Northern Ireland – 65 (down @50)

    Scotland – 352 (down @70)

    Wales – 125 (down 46).

Deaths – There were 23 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 25.3% in the rolling 7-day average. Deaths by nation, England – 22, Wales – 1 and none in either Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Testing – 1,641,942 tests were conducted on Sunday, 28 March. This is a decrease in the rolling 7-day average of 14.1%. The estimated testing capacity by labs as of Thursday, 25 March, is 782,830, which may help explain the story AL posted above.

Hospitalisations – Doesn’t seem to have been updated.

Vaccinations – As of 28 March a total of 30,444,829 people had received the 1st shot of a vaccine and 3,674,266 had received both shots. This means that 57.8% of adults had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 7% have had both.

Three weeks ago, when Gov. Hogan announced that he was lifting almost all restrictions in Maryland other than the mask mandate (including indoor restaurants, bars, and gyms at 100% capacity), we were averaging ~750 new cases a day.  Now the 7-day moving average is just shy of 1200.

At least I’ve had both my shots.  My wife, who’s a mere child of 56, isn’t eligible for another 2 weeks.  Hoping she can get the J&J, one-and-done, so we can resume a more normal life as soon as possible.

Yesterday, when I helped my husband check-in for his second eye surgery, (he wasn’t wearing his hearing aids, so they let me in the door as his hearing person) I mentioned that he had both of his Covid vaccinations. She asked if we brought his CDC shot card with us so they could scan it into his file.  That surprised me. I was not aware that our shot records would be part of all our medical files but I guess it makes sense. We actually got our shots at our family practice medical clinic so our shots are in our file there.  But i was not aware that other medical offices would as for them.

Has this happened to anyone else? Should we bring the cards with us for all of our doctors visits? Dentists? Physical therapists? Etc.?

@lowtechcyclist: Hogan has been showing his true GOP colors for a while.  Not to mention that shitshow Redfield acting as an informal advisor and blathering about COVID being released from a lab in China, in his opinion.  I had my first Pfizer shot yesterday at Six Flags; they must have used every orange cone in the state for that slalom course.  Took me over an hour – I’ve heard it took over three hours for some people.  Ravens Stadium where my spouse got his shot was great – in and out in 1/2 hour including free parking.  Hogan waited too long approving vaccination sites for MoCo and the west side of Maryland.

    @Scout211:

Should we bring the cards with us for all of our doctors visits? Dentists? Physical therapists? Etc.?

Call and ask. (Even if your dentist calls you this afternoon and says, “Surprise! Teeth cleaning this afternoon! Get in here!”) ?

@Mary G: OC new cases up slightly from <100 to 150 or more

I looked up OC population, about 1/3 of Michigan. So that would equate to about 500 daily cases here. I wish! Things seemed to be going well about 2 weeks back, a few days of cases around 1000, then it shot up. In the 4000 to 5000 range now.

Most of my closest people got vaccine last week. I was in Ensemble2 trial and received a shot 2/25. Found out last week it was placebo. They are supposed to give me the real stuff in the next two weeks.

I looked around for something sooner, but only RiteAid has open slots. They claim to to use Federal rules for eligibility, which I don’t qualify. All the places using Michigan guidelines are full. We open up to everyone April 1, I think.

Considered buying a pack of cigarettes and becoming a smoker, but will try to be patient.

@Geo Wilcox: My Massachusetts town is running a vaccination clinic and my mother-in-law is volunteering there. She says it’s running really smoothly, though we’ll see how well that situation persists when they open it up to everyone over 16–the relatively slowly staged Mass. rollout may have the advantage of creating less chaos at this point. Anyway, I’m signed up for notifications from there so I can go in when the time comes.

@Cheryl from Maryland: Redfield has been in this pattern ever since the early days of the AIDS pandemic, when he was touting abstinence-only approaches and a non-working vaccine.

@Scout211: I don’t know about it being requested, but I volunteered my info recently. My main medical providers are a part of the same system and use an online portal for various things like test results and appointment reminders. There is a function for non urgent medical questions I had never used before, but I chose to tell them I had managed to get Pfizer #1. The nurse who must be the minder responded that they had put it in my record. I will add my #2 shot card when I get it. I think it’s relevant to my health record. I have a few specialists outside that network, so they will have to be told in person I guess. I do need new glasses. I have been putting off going in.

    @Cheryl from Maryland:

@lowtechcyclist: Hogan has been showing his true GOP colors for a while.

    All too true.

Not to mention that shitshow Redfield acting as an informal advisor and blathering about COVID being released from a lab in China, in his opinion.

I just don’t get why anyone on the right says this sort of thing.  If this were true and Covid-19 really was in effect an attack by China, then what’s it say about how Trump defended us against this attack?  He threw the door wide open, and actively interfered with the states that were trying to defend themselves.  He’d be a traitor yet again.

I was lucky, I was able to snag an appointment at the CVS in Dunkirk which is <20 minutes from my house.  And each time, I was in and out of there in 25-30 minutes, including the 15-minute wait afterwards.

@Scout211: As a nursing student, I frequently have to provide proof of my vaccination status (which mostly consists of antibody titers because I had the common childhood diseases back in the day), and I’ve found that keeping an updated version of my vaccinations with my primary care physician to be the best way of doing so. In fact, on today’s to-do list, I’ll be copying the CDC card I got for my Covid shots and uploading it to her office. If I attempt to keep all that documentation myself, I invariably forget which of the folders in the vicinity of the file cabinet it is in.

Brazil’s excess-death figure of 22% looks about right.  Friend of a friend runs a funeral home in a  Washington county that got hit pretty hard, she says their business is up about 19%.  Normal fluctuations are less than one percent annually.  But her own sister thinks Covid’s a hoax….I can’t even with these people.

Considering the alternative, a surplus of vaccine is far better than a shortage.  We “loaned” vaccine doses to Canada and Mexico for the vaccine we had that was not yet approved here.  When (if) we get to the point where everyone who wants a vaccine has one and there are doses left over, it seems like a no brainer to donate them to other countries.  I would hesitate to give it away while people here still can’t get scheduled for lack of supply, but if we are waiting for approvals or can’t get the shots into arms any faster, why not let over and above doses be used?  You don’t have to empty the shelves, but a rich country or rich people hoarding well beyond their needs is a bit unseemly.

@Mary G: And yes, I know it’s an intermuscular shot.

Intra, not inter: from Latin for “within”. Intermuscular would be “between muscles”.

Side note: ever notice how when you go to the doctor, the diagnosis is just a translation into Latin and/or Greek?  “Doctor, I have this itchy red irritation on my skin.” “You have dermatitis.” “That’s what I just said! Itchy red irritation on skin!” “Yep, that will be $200 please.”
