Why? Because they did it with Ebola.
That was bad faith the whole way through.

Maryland vaccinates any out-of-Stater as long as they have an appointment (which means they meet the current allowed groups; come April 15, that will be everyone.) In fact, at one mass vaccination site, they vaccinated more out-of-Staters than the people from that county that have shown up!

I just read that one of the Atlanta mega-sites (in a stadium) is now giving “walk up ” shots, no appointment or ID needed. They are planning to give 10,000 shots a day and some groups are trying to get homeless (who might not have an ID) their vaccines. It’s amazing how fast it’s gone from “when will I get by shot?” to everyone I know getting vaccinated. Meanwhile, my county has finally set up a program to vaccinate the home-bound, which means I can get my 93 year old mom vaccinated. Wow!

@gene108: Aspects of the Chinese political system has proven beneficial in terms of pandemic response. The tendency for the bureaucracy at all levels to single mindedly pursue key objectives highlighted by the central leadership can achieve amazing results when the objective is returning to zero domestic cases as soon as possible. In pursuit of such objectives, the bureaucracy will bulldoze their way through any and all impediments, disregarding all niceties about human dignity or individual rights. It is almost a pathology. It means important objectives are generally achieved, but with a lot of damage along the way.
In the case of pandemic response, the positive impacts from achieve the objectives have far outweighed the negative impacts from the excesses and abuses. The excesses and abuses are real, if not necessarily systemic, such as township in Langfang in Hebei Province going into tough lock down upon the discovery of a single case, only because it is next to the capital, or the epicenter villages in Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province and Wangkui County in Heilongjiang Province still maintaining some movement controls despite not having had any reported positive cases for nearly a month.
In other policy arenas, the negative from the excesses and abuses are much more apparent. Foreign observers often mistake the excesses and abuses to be the policy objectives. I do not believe that is the case most of the time. However, it is also abundantly clear that the CCP regime is more than willing to tolerate excesses and abuses in pursuit of its goals, being it economic development, social engineering or regime security. Thus, the regime could detain up to a million Uighurs (for weeks and months) to achieve what it sees as de-radicalization (of Salafism, separatism and militancy) goals, and parts of the family planning bureaucracy could resort to forced contraception to enforce the limits on the number of children per couple (though force abortions are unheard of these days).

Today is the first day that all 50+ are eligible in California. The state has updated their website, Santa Clara county hasn’t yet. Most of the providers have not updated their websites to reflect the change in eligibility, either. There are no appointments available within 50 miles of San Jose, as far as I can tell. CVS shows a few pharmacies with openings around Fresno and Bakersfield, more than two hours away. Why yes, I have a browser window with all of these pages open.

Greetings from Michigan – unhappily serving (along with NJ & CT) as a bad example to the rest of the nation. It has just been unreal watching the numbers climb over the last month. Our 7-day average was nearly down to 1000 just a few weeks back, now 5300 and still climbing.
On the good news front, we are at about 34% of adults having at least one shot. And today it opens up to everybody.

The county web site lists us as still in purple tier. I know we have not yet met the red tier guidelines for two weeks, so we should not be allowed to move for another 3 or 4 days at least. Last night in town the patio outdoor seating was just as close together as it ever was, and they were doing indoor seating as well. I couldn’t see enough of the dining area to tell if they were at 25% capacity or not, but indoor isn’t on the list for purple tier at all. I suppose it is possible that the county didn’t update their web site for status, or gave businesses an exemption, but either way it did not look particularly safe. I look forward to seeing the numbers a week from now.
