Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

No one could have predicted…

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Republicans in disarray!

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

This blog will pay for itself.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Orange County had 81 new cases out of 13,159 tests today, so no new surges here. Yet. Only 131 people in the hospital, 22 of them in ICU. The entire So Cal block is doing extremely well, the central valley where they keep reelecting Kevin McQuarty and Devin Nunes not so well, but not terrible either.
Number of Persons Fully Vaccinated 527,428 as of 3/29.

(LAT) Amoeba Music reopened today in Hollywood, with strict limits on the number of customers inside, and a line of masked people stretching down the block. I haven’t been in years and will probably never go, but it feels like life is coming back with the possibility. I spent many happy years at various music stores around LA in my yoot.

@Baud: it’s better than being dead in a world where Palin is one of the sensible ones.

More seriously, she hasn’t been getting the media attention in recent years. I suspect that helps improve her judgement. I hope it can indicate some other Republican types wising up. There isn’t enough attention space for an infinite number of outrage shock jock politicians and some of them could realize it and band together to snuff some of the hi jinks form of non government. I can hope anyway.

Barely any vaccine appointments in Democratic metro areas but a ton in Republican rural areas.

My strategy for scheduling appointments was similar: looking at a map of locations and picking a site that was further from the major population centers. I wasn’t thinking so much in terms of Republican vs Democratic as ‘lots of people are looking for appointments where they live, so I’ll look in places where there aren’t as many people.’

After a delayed and confusing first, 2nd, and third rollout here in Alexandria, VA, which is its own city & has its own health department except when it’s in Fairfax County, suddenly some gear or other kicked in and suddenly there are little pop-up clinics all over, arranged by whoever wants to, e.g. my landlord’s property management company and the local food & other help charity has a sign-up today/come in tomorrow with the J & J offered. I’m hoping my son’s caregivers can get to that one. My son was vaccinated yesterday at an Alexandria health dept clinic in the old Pier One store, J & J, and has so far no discernible reaction (it’s difficult to tell with him as he’s non-verbal) other than a little bit pale.

About the J & J debacle, all over the news: the plant in question, in Baltimore, had a “you idiots are idiots” grade on their review just BEFORE they were awarded their Operation Warped Speed contract. We’re also assured that the vaccines out in the field now are good, and that the bad batch was one bad batch at the well-before-filling-the-vials stage, and has been destroyed.

Thursday in the UK we had 4479 new cases. This is an increase of about 420 from Wednesday’s numbers but a decrease of 16.7% in the rolling 7-day average. Cases by nation,

    England – 3784 (up @440)
    Northern Ireland – 107 (down 16)
    Scotland – 400 (down 142)
    Wales – 188 (up 128).

Deaths – There were 51 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 38.5% in the rolling 7-day average. New deaths by nation, England – 41, Scotland – 8, Wales – 2 and none in Northern Ireland.

Testing – A total of 1,266,685 tests were conducted on Wednesday, 31 March. This is a decrease in the rolling 7-day average of 17.9%. PCR testing capacity estimated by the labs was 782,830 as of Thursday, 25 March. The decrease in take up of testing has been commented upon here in the UK and speculation is that, as more people are getting vaccinated, people are only getting tested if they are symptomatic.

Hospitalisations – As of Tuesday, 30 March, 3957 people were in hospital. 547 were on ventilators as of Wednesday, 31 March. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions had decreased by 23.5% as of 1 April.

Vaccinations – As of 31 March, a total of 31,147,444 people had received 1 dose of a vaccine and 4,513,458 had received both. This means that, as of this date, 59.1% of the UK adult population had received 1 shot and 8.6% were fully vaccinated.

General – A cross party group of 70 MP’s, including former Tory leader Ian Duncan Smith and former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn have launched a campaign opposing the introduction of “internal vaccine passports” for access to hospitality venues, theatres, cinemas and sporting events. The government is said to be considering these as a temporary measure to allow venues to open at a higher or full capacity. The group has described such “passports” as “divisive” and “leading to the creation of a group of 2nd class citizens.”

True. The polling on this shows there is a lot of support for the idea but the counter argument being made is that it’s not just anti-vaxxers who will be affected. It will also discriminate against people who can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons.

Plus, the pub/restaurant industry are saying it would be difficult and costly to enforce, as they would need to have someone on the door asking to see peoples papers and this could lead to staff being assaulted.

We are already being assaulted over the issue of mask wearing.

Those who can’t be vaccinated for “actual” medical issues, shouldn’t be going out to pubs, restaurants and theatres, until “herd immunity” is achieved and Covid is in the rear window. For the immunocompromised, exposure to Covid, is a death sentence.

Being vaccinated doesn’t mean that you can’t get Covid or spread Covid, it just means that your viral loads are probably less, and your chances of being hospitalized with severe Covid, or dying from Covid, drop down to the less than 10% level.
