Late Night Open Thread: Media Mudlarks Stick to What They Know

The Government Accountability Office has issued a damning report about Ivanka Trump’s Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative. https://t.co/5fxEoUA0xt

— POLITICO (@politico) March 31, 2021

Our very serious Presidential Media doesn’t understand administration or accounting any better than Jarvanka… but piles of poo, *that* they feel fully qualified to report.

We’ll be cleaning up after the Trump Crime Cartel for the next twenty years (assuming the world doesn’t change out of recognition in the meantime), and there’s a nontrivial percentage of Our Failed Media that will never understand why, much less how.

Today, Biden’s dog pooped on the floor and a GAO investigation reported that Ivanka’s $265 million pet policy project was a catastrophe of planning with no clear execution.

Same-same. https://t.co/JJ7i7OyGQF

— Peter W. Singer (@peterwsinger) March 31, 2021

We have officially had more coverage of Major and Champ misbehaving than of private email use in the Trump administration. Almost as though the idea that email use was the single most important thing in the world was reporters being very well-trained lapdogs of the GOP. https://t.co/aRU1N70Ppc

— Alex Hazanov. (@alexhazanov) March 31, 2021

Gaetz has a major minor problem, while Biden has a minor Major problem.

Let’s see what, if anything, DOJ decides to do with that GAO report.

I find it funny that the dogs are more covered than anything else – I assume wall to wall coverage of Major at Fox News instead of Matt Gaetz.

I have an appointment to get vaccinated on Tuesday at Levi’s Stadium. No idea which one it is, but I think it’s either Pfizer or Moderna because I think they mentioned scheduling the second one.

My personal feeling is that the big issue is that the media has a target amount of space for scandals, the same way they have a target size for their sports and business sections. If an administration is especially scandalous, the result is less attention being paid to each individual scandal rather than spending more time on scandals in total. If an administration is especially clean, smaller and smaller events will be exaggerated into scandals and more attention will be paid to each one rather than devoting scandal space to something else.

    @sukabi:

I would love to see Psaki respond to a “reporter’s” question about the dogs with the following:

“We sense the urgent concern of the press on this issue, so the President assembled a team of forensic experts to watch and analyze the footage from every single White House security camera, as well as have the “evidence” collected and analyzed genetically, extracting DNA sequences and comparing them to each dog’s DNA. At this time, the leader of the forensic team reports that after a combined 128 hours of study, they have thus far concluded: “He’s a very good boy. Yes, he is. A very good boy.”

We will certainly keep you apprised of all future developments on this evidently very, very important story.”

I read a great description of Psaki’s facial expression when she is listening to one of those RW talking point questions:

She looks like a mother who is listening to her teenager ask permission to sleep over a friend’s house when she has already talked with the friend’s parents and knows they are going out of town.

That could be true — it’s the sort of thing for which Cheney was notorious.

Or it might be a total coincidence — Gaetz has made any number of enemies — and either or both of the Cheneys would be more than happy to take credit for it, because that’s also the Cheney Way.

@Origuy: Hooray! I have an appointment at Kaiser in Richmond on Sunday for my first dose; I don’t know if it will be Moderna or Pfizer, but if it’s a first dose, I guess it must be one or the other. It’s a bit of a drive from my home in San Francisco, but well worth the trip. It took a couple of hours of clicking around to find an appointment closer than Sacramento – which I would have done, but glad I don’t have to.

That light at the end of the tunnel? Is actually the end of the tunnel.

The dog poo stuff is not a scandal. It is totally trivial. I can’t recall any similar story about any past president. This crap reminds me of the British tabloid press, and Fox News, which loves to run an endless stream of low key negative stories about designated celebrities or political figures.

The point is to always have some negative item out to distract or counter positive coverage from other news outlets.

@Felanius Kootea: Oooh, I hadn’t thought of that, but I love it. It fits with Vice’s killer personality.

I have to say the Matt Gaetz ongoing saga is my favorite news story right now. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. He is both an asshole and apparently dumber than a box of rocks.  I have heard two different lawyers on MSNBC sound incredulous that he doesn’t get a lawyer and just STFU.

Matt also makes a nice distraction and contrast to the George Floyd trial. I can only bear to read and watch excerpts since each new witness and piece of testimony makes what happened even more heartbreaking and tragic.

That brought back memories of a fabulous spring  exhibition that Macy’s put on in the San Francisco store, maybe in 1993? They built bridges inside the ground floor connecting all of the cosmetic islands, with bicycles parked on them and flower baskets with tulips and daffodils and other flowers hanging off the sides of the bridges, as a tribute to Holland. They were selling clogs and we bought each daughter a set. They were in 4th and 8th grade, and they enjoyed clomping around the house for a while. They outgrew them and I wanted to hang onto them but somehow they got lost.
