I can attest to the dismal failure of the Ontario government pandemic response [Conservatives, of course]. We are right back into another “lockdown” after prematurely ending the last one just a couple of weeks ago.
Ontario was still at a thousand new cases a day, a level which has been shown was not controllable by tracing and isolating, when our government gave up. So now we are at three thousand new cases a day, and rising.
It is incredible to me that they can continually make the same mistakes, and justify it each time by claiming they are following the medical/scientific advice.
Note: The Ontario head of public health is terrible and meekly backs up the government every time. Numerous medical officials have been calling for his ouster since May 2020.

The UK’s precipitous drop in Covid cases looks so dramatic because of the massive post-New Year peak caused (sit down for this one, otherwise the shock might kill you) by the Johnson Government’s homicidal determination to pretend that everything was just fine and dandy in the run up to Christmas. Tens of thousands of extra cases as a result, forcing them to order a 2nd National Lockdown, which has slowed and stopped the runaway spread.
Coinciding with this latest horrific failure of basic health policy, the success of the NHS-run vaccination program has given the British Media something less gloomy to concentrate their coverage on. Of course, as with the monumental failure of the hugely expensive and crony-run Track & Trace program, the ever obedient Infotainment Machine has covered for the Tories with a little bit of terminological gaslighting, being very insistent on calling it the NHS Test & Trace program, while being equally disingenuous by trumpeting the Government’s Vaccination program and allowing Johnson and Co to claim it as their success without any pushback whatsoever.

There is a note on the Coronavirus Dashboard indicating that, while it will be updated over Easter the amount of data updated will vary so, on to what we know, on Friday the UK had 3423 new cases. This is a reduction of 28.3% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 2847 (down 34)
Northern Ireland – 84 (down 23)
Scotland – 397 (down 17)
Wales – 95 (figures not reported on Thursday).
Deaths – There were 10 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 43.7% in the rolling 7-day average. New deaths by nation, England – 8, Wales – 2. Scotland and Northern Ireland had no deaths.
Testing – Not updated.
Hospitalisations – On Thursday, 1 April, there were 3536 people in hospital and 517 on ventilators. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was down by 23.4% as of 28 March.
Vaccinations – As of 2nd April, 31,425,682 people had received the 1st shot of a vaccine and 5,205,505 people had received both shots. As of this date 59.7% of British adults had received 1 shot and 9.9% were fully vaccinated.
General – It is being reported that Boris Johnson will set out a system of what he is calling “COVID Status Certificates” tomorrow. These are intended to allow people to attend sporting fixtures, theatres and other public events and will be trialled over the next few months. From the reporting, people will have to prove that they have either been vaccinated, had a recent negative test or have had COVID within the past 6 months before being allowed to attend an event. What form the certificate will take is unknown but speculation is that it will be some sort of app. (Well, that went well with the Track and Trace App !). As I reported yesterday there is a lot of cross party opposition to this and it will be interesting to see if he can get it past the House of Commons.

Can anyone point me in a direction of a disinformation campaign on the vaccine? It came up in yesterdays post from Watergirl on What 80 or 95% Vaccine Protection Means. I will put some of the whole quote “So with vaccine you are protected against severe disease (likely hospitalization) or death. It does NOT mean you can’t get infected, can’t get sick or won’t infect other people OR NOT GET LONG COVID. More and more data is coming out on these points, and will probably be submitted to the FDA as part of regular approval for each vaccine.”
I have a really good friend, super smart, who is terrified even after she gets her vaccination that she will get long Covid. The language the commenter used is verbatim to her fears. She is from Turkey, so I know she reads a lot of news from out of the US, but everyone she mentioned as reputable. Guardian, etc. I tried to search Google but couldn’t come up with anything.

@Laura Too: @Laura Too:
That quote is not a conspiracy theory, it’s a combination of bad reporting and doom scrolling. The studies that have been done so far have focussed on deaths and hospitalizations, since that’s what’s needed to get an emergency use action from the FDA. The other things are not known for sure right now. That’s why a normal vaccine acceptance procedure is 5-10 years to do all the studies on those things.
That said, there are some preliminary studies that seem to show that the vaccines prevent infection entirely, at least for a few months. There’s also anecdotal reports that getting the vaccine can fix Long COVID.
Laura Too
@WaterGirl: I did, and I read the comments as well. Everyone has the same guess about Russians but no links. My friend had no link and neither did the original commentor from last night. @Laura Too:
In WaterGirl’s thread I haven’t seen any mention of challenge trials, which answers a different question than the vaccine efficacy trials, which answers a different question than effectiveness (“real world”).
The efficacy trials were for prevention of particular sets of reported symptoms. So in the Lancet article quoted by Kristine at comment 2:
The efficacy trials used two groups of people, one vaccinated and one given placebos.
Challenge trials use one group of people and deliberately infect everyone to directly answer the question “does the vaccine prevent infection?”. Everyone gets repeatedly tested.
Even though the purpose of the efficacy trials was not to measure prevention of infection, as Betsy at comment 146 in WaterGirls post said:
But that info comes from data created after the trials. This article lists three studies from England, Israel and Moderna that try to indirectly calculate prevention of infection, but they are not challenge trials.
Likewise, this CDC report used weekly testing for infections (not just symptoms) of vaccinated and not vaccinated people to measure effectiveness. Important qualifications in “Discussion” section.
This Feb. 17 BBC article reports the world’s first vaccine challenge trial. People will be deliberately infected after vaccination to most directly answer the question “Do vaccines prevent infection? “.
Edit to limit already too much oversimplification.

Man, there’s my new pet peeve “just a little while longer”. What the hell does that mean – one month, six months, what are you talking about? My city came up with metrics for relaxing restrictions – actual numbers to shoot for. So I can tell people here “you don’t like the restrictions, get vaccinated and stay healthy, because when we get to 20 cases a day or fewer & fewer than 20 in the hospital over 28 days and 50% vaccinated in the city, most of them go away”. It’s motivation – “just a little while” isn’t.
Laura Too
