The reason I know the Biden infrastructure plan is immensely popular is that the GOP has preferred to declare war on the national pastime.

Disappointed @MLB will move the All-Star Game, but proud of their stance on voting rights. GA GOP traded economic opportunity for suppression. On behalf of PoC targeted by #SB202 to lose votes + now wages, I urge events & productions to come & speak out or stay & fight. #gapol

the game wasn’t relocated out of atlanta. the stadium is in unincorporated cobb county because the braves did not want their exurban fans to have to go into atlanta, for reasons i am sure you can figure out. https://t.co/AWw2ke8RYf
— Peloton InfoSec Analyst (Incident Response) (@CalmSporting) April 2, 2021
For people upset about sports applying political pressure on states, it appears they’ve forgotten the only reason Atlanta even *has* a baseball team is because in 1965 the city agreed to integrate seating at Fulton County Stadium as a condition for the Milwaukee Braves to move.

Easy for the GOP to come out against MLB; Texas & Florida have two teams each, but the only other state of the Confederacy w a team is Georgia

Congratulations to @MLB for taking a stand on behalf of voting rights for all citizens. There’s no better way for America’s pastime to honor the great Hank Aaron, who always led by example.

this whole MLB all-star game just feels like state and congressional republicans demand the right to shoot themselves in the dicks and dare the democrats to stop them, and i, for one, think that it's time the democrats take a hands-off approach to the problem.

Funny how Loeffler hid her wingnut credentials in the closet until Trump coaxed her true self into the open. Now that she lost that senate seat and her WNBA team slice, she didn’t need to continue but lookie here, The Real Kelly.

Reading the above just makes me more mad at Charles Barkley’s latest on-air thought vomit. Essentially he said that there’s no difference between Dems/Republicans, they’re both just making us hate each other for power/profit. Glad he’s giving this 20 year old “hot take” now. Yup, totally, no difference. /facepalm

Regarding the Braves move to Cobb County, public transportation (MARTA) does not go to Cobb County. MARTA went to the old stadium.

I like this reply to Loeffler:
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Leto: “let’s make the whites and blacks not like each other”
so Barkley’s theory is that Democrats invented racism as a club to beat up on Republicans? Stacey Abrams and Jim Clyburn are in this to “keep their grasp on money and power”?
Dan B
It’s discouraging that we keep going through this. Something in humanity deplores evolution. A great deal must happen if we are to survive the next fifty years.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
Hasn’t Barkley always been problematic, though?
I thought he had a history of saying dumb things.
WaterGirl
@Leto: I am not really a sports person, but I was under the impression that Charles Barkley was one of the good guys. I apparently had that wrong?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@germy: I don’t know about problematic. I’m not a big basketball fan so if something he says gets through to me, it’s rare. My impression has been that he was pretty funny. I do believe he was a Republican until Obama ran, on the reasonable if not admirable grounds that they’re the party of rich people and he’s a rich people.
The trouble with this is the timing and useful idiocy of it. He’s being retweeted by a lot of MAGA people for saying that, as they read it, Democrats are the Real Racists, and by a few Roses for saying the Republicans and Democrats are exactly alike.

@Dan B: the next fifty years will see India as a heavily populated nation disappear as will most countries that share this climate (all of South East Asia) and most of the Middle East and Central America(we are already seeing AGW drive people there towards America); all due to high temps and humidity that exceeds human tolerance for a few weeks every year. Oil (any at a cost effective price) will be gone.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: yeah, just such an incredibly dumb take. If he didn’t have an outsized platform to spew shit it wouldn’t be so bad, but here we are. He’s not half as smart as Kareem Abdul Jamar, who is always relevant and on point.

So who’s going to go to Cardinals games now?
JoyceH
I saw Kareem on Celebrity Jeopardy years ago – first time I realized how smart he was. And that’s also when I realized that people who mistake actors for the characters they play should be shut in a room until they’ve watched 100 eps or so of Celebrity Jeopardy. That actor that plays an egghead genius on TV? Turns out to be a ROCK. The episode I watched had Kareem up against Mclean Stevenson and Teri Ferrel, and he mopped the floor with them.
JoyceH
@JoyceH: Replying to my own post – that woman I saw on the news who said that she knew Trump was a great businessman because she’d watched every episode of The Apprentice – she’s a great candidate for the 100 episodes of Celebrity Jeopardy treatment. Then maybe she wouldn’t mistake a game show host for a guy who actually knows how to do stuff.
Shalimar
@germy: I’m sure Howley is right, he has seen zero evidence against Gaetz. I’m also pretty sure there isn’t a rule that the Feds have to show their evidence to Patrick Howley before they show it to a grand jury.
He’s being picky with his definitions. From what we know so far, Gaetz is a john who paid for girls to cross state lines, not a pimp or trafficker. He meets the Mann Act definition, though, which is what matters.
@Leto: Barkley is a Republican who has been disenchanted with Republicans for a long time. It’s not surprising to find out he was already disenchanted with Democrats and that’s why he became a Republican in the first place.
The Thin Black Duke
@Leto: Black folks don’t care what the NBA’s house negro is saying.

I guess he didn’t watch Gaetz’s interview with Tucker Carlson, or read his tweets. Because (as you say) Gaetz basically lined up the necessary points for a Mann Act charge.

@Shalimar:
I’m not defending Barkley’s Republican outbursts, but I will say that he was born in Alabama in 1963 and when he came of age the Republicans down there were still the Better Guys if not quite the Good Guys.
Over the years I’ve met quite a few African American men – always men – from that generation and that part of the nation who identify as Republican. Who knows who they actually vote for. Kind of like white men in the northern suburbs who still identify as Democrats, but the last time they voted D for president was Carter.

Hell, the GQP already declared the Muppets to be anti-American anti-corporate liberal communists back when the revival movie came out, so coming out against baseball isn’t that much of a surprise.

@debbie: Not sure, but you may be talking about trump’s hiring of veteran Florida Republican operative Susan Wiles to head up his political operations. Politico had an article about this a day or so ago.
Wiles has a reputation as a shrewd, effective campaign manager. She might be able to tighten up trump’s sloppy and self-interested henchmen. But I doubt if she can tighten up her fickle boss, who will likely dump her within a year.

Reminds me of Condi Rice explaining that she was a Republican because of how those mean Southern Democrats treated her daddy back in the day. It always baffled me how this allegedly smart woman missed the fact that once the Democratic Party adopted Civil Rights, all those meanies left the party and became Republicans.

Every time I see Loeffler, the song that comes on my mental jukebox is Ricky Skaggs’ “Don’t Get Above Your Raisin’.” She’s nothing but a trophy wife.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
@James E Powell: I was born a year before Barkley and my family is from Alabama. There are men such as those you describe; they are an outlier in our state, and no one Barkley’s age who was in the state during the 70s/80s would harbor any illusions about Republicans being better unless they were absolute imbeciles.
I’ll attribute it to his becoming very rich very quickly and determining to keep it from “those people.” He’s not worth being bothered with aside from that.
Geminid
@burnspbesq: When Kemp picked Loeffler to fill Johnny Isakson’s Senate seat, I read that he was looking towards his 2022 reelection, and thought this would improve his standing among suburban women. As a man, I may not be so good a judge of that proposition, but I’m not sure Loeffler’s appeal reaches very far beyond the Junior League and the Garden Club.
WaterGirl
@Geminid: My nostrils flare just picturing her – like I just stepped in poop barefoot. So that’s one data point in support of your opinion.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
@JoyceH: Amen!!

@germy: This is THE issue. All the rest is window trimming, intentionally put there by the GOP so that that would be what everyone focuses on. I haven’t watched all of the coverage, so I may have missed it, but has a single reporter or pundit questioned the governor or legislators about this part of the law?
Jay C
@Geminid:
I have also read that Gov. Kemp appointed Loeffler to the seat because ( in addition to her supposed “appeal” as you note), she was also a big fundraiser for GA GOPers and a general crony: his original plan was to try to leverage a “friendly” Senate seat into boosting his own political prestige and power.
wonder how that’s working out for him…??

More likely, Wiles will get the blame when the new! improved! Trump Legacy Non-Profit turns out to be yet another instrument for grifting the rubes, and the IRS comes looking to see where all those ‘love offerings’ disappeared to, like water into the sandy Florida soil…

@eclare: to be fair to the racists, MARTA trains did not go to the old stadium, but close enough to where there was a MARTA bus shuttle from the nearest train stop. Of course it goose nowhere near Cobb County, which voted against its expansion multiple times out of fear it would bring Negroes to their sacred land.

@Shalimar: Thank you for affirming this:
Google is not my friend. I tried to learn whether the Mann Act had been repealed or not. The reason I wondered is the MSM has been talking about the alleged 17-year-old girl and “underage,” as though that matters. If I understand it, age does not matter. The Mann Act makes it a felony for a man to transport a woman across state lines for sex. Doesn’t matter if he pays her, doesn’t matter how old she is, if she says she had sex with him he’s toast and she’s not in jeopardy, except maybe her reputation. I would be glad for any correction(s) of my misunderstanding.
