It's worth noting that while a 3-week gap does get people fully protected faster, there's no evidence that an extra week has any negative impact on effectiveness. This also comes amid an ongoing debate about whether US should adopt much longer spacing, like Britain and Canada.

On 4/5 China reported 15 new domestic confirmed & 2 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all in Yunnan Province. There are currently 63 domestic confirmed & 27 domestic asymptomatic cases in the Province.

    • Ruili in Dehong Prefecture reported 15 new domestic confirmed (4 moderate & 11 mild, 12 previously asymptomatic) & 2 new domestic asymptomatic cases. There are currently 63 domestic confirmed & 26 domestic asymptomatic cases there. Of the 3 new domestic confirmed cases (1 moderate & 2 mild), 2 are Chinese nationals and 1 is a Burmese national. Of the new domestic asymptomatic cases, 1 is a Chinese national & 1 is a Burmese national. 3 communities remain at High Risk. 3 residential compounds, 1 factory & 2 villages remain at Medium Risk.
    • Gengma County in Lincang City did not report any new positive cases. There is 1 domestic asymptomatic case there.

    Imported Cases

On 4/5 China reported 9 new imported confirmed cases, 15 imported asymptomatic cases:

    • Taiyuan in Shanxi Province – 4 confirmed cases, all coming from Poland
    • Shanghai Municipality – 2 confirmed cases, 1 Chinese national each returning from Ethiopia & Russia
    • Guangzhou in Guangdong Province – 2 confirmed cases, both Chinese nationals returning from Cambodia; 6 asymptomatic cases, 3 Chinese nationals returning from Myanmar & 1 each from Bangladesh & Malaysia, & a foreign national coming from Iran
    • Shenzhen in Guangdong Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from South Africa
    • Foshan in Guangdong Province – 1 asymptomatic case, 1 Chinese national returning from Kazakhstan, off a flight that landed at Guangzhou
    • Changzhou in Jiangsu Province – 1 confirmed case (previously asymptomatic), coming from Japan
    • Chengdu In Sichuan Province – 4 asymptomatic cases, 2 Chinese nationals returning from Myanmar & 1 each from Tanzania & Ghana (via Amsterdam Schiphol)
    • Xi’an in Shaanxi Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from the Sudan (via Frankfurt)
    • Fuzhou in Fujian Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from Papua New Guinea
    • Zhengzhou in Henan Province – 1 asymptomatic case, no information released

Overall in China, 18 confirmed cases recovered, 4 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation & 13 were reclassified as confirmed cases, and 214 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 344 active confirmed cases in the country (180 imported), 2 in critical/serious condition (both imported), 304 asymptomatic cases (277 imported), 2 suspect cases (all imported). 7,773 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.

As of 4/5, 142.802M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 2.832M doses in the past 24 hrs. The the last 3 days formed a Tomb Sweeping Day long weekend in China, which probably explains the reduced vaccination rate.

On 4/6, Hong Kong reported 7 new cases, 4 imported & 3 domestic (all have source of infection identified).

Greece: for the 24-hour period ending Monday evening, 1866 new cases … but at a positivity rate of 11.43 percent. Whether that’s due to fewer tests on Sunday, with more of those being on an emergency basis, thus increasing the likelihood that someone who seeks out a test on Sunday is going to be positive … I don’t know.

73 dead, and there are 759 patients in ICU on ventilators.

And I just read something worrying in the Greek press: supposedly there’s a new study linking the Astra-Zeneca vaccine to cases of thrombosis, but authorities are saying the benefits outweigh the risks. I don’t know what that’s going to do to vaccination efforts in places that depend on the AZ shot…

Monday in the UK was a public holiday so these figures should be read with that in mind, plus Wales and Northern Ireland are reporting 48 hours worth of data as they didn’t report anything on Sunday. Bearing these facts in mind, 2762 new cases were reported yesterday. This is a reduction of 33.5% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,

    England – 2236

    Northern Ireland – 89

    Scotland – 248

    Wales – 189.

Deaths – There were 26 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a reduction of 44% in the rolling 7-day average. Deaths by nation, England – 16, Northern Ireland – 2, Scotland – 0 and Wales – 8.

Testing – Not updated (Public Holiday)

Hospitalisations – Not updated (see above)

Vaccinations – As of 4 April a total of 31,581,623 people had received the 1st shot of a vaccine and 5,432,126 had received both. This means that 60% of UK residents have received 1 dose of a vaccine and 10.3% have had both. There has been a slowdown in the number of people being vaccinated over the last few days. This might be related to this having been the Easter weekend and people choosing not to have their shots during this period or it might be a genuine slowdown. We’ll see over the next few days.

General – Boris Johnson has spoken and he has confirmed what I wrote yesterday. The relaxation for England will go ahead next week and we are on course for the next stage of relaxations on 17 May (which includes international leisure travel) but he warned people not to book foreign holidays as yet.  Not that that has stopped the holiday industry from upping their ads for same.

The Government seems divided about vaccine passports. Boris has said they are only looking at them for international travel but Vaccine Minister, Nadhim Zahawi has said they are being explored for some internal uses.

This might be related to this having been the Easter weekend and people choosing not to have their shots during this period or it might be a genuine slowdown.

The Scottish First Minister reported a total of 259 new COVID-19 cases from yesterday and zero reported deaths, with the caveat that the reporting offices weren’t necessarily fully staffed over the holiday weekend so it may take up to Thursday to catch up with the true numbers. The test positivity rate is about 2.0%.

She also said that the first deliveries of the Moderna mRNA vaccine have arrived in the UK. Scotland has been allocated over 1 million doses out of a UK total of 17 million or so which will arrive over the next few months under contract. They should start being injected into people’s arms some time in the next couple of weeks.

Pretty much everyone in Scotland above the age of 60 has now been vaccinated with at least one dose (that includes me). The uptake in the 55-59 age range is 92% and for people aged 50-54 it’s 72%. Vaccine hesitancy doesn’t seem to be much of a thing here in Scotland, surprisingly.
