If I believed that a once-every-twelve-years ceremony was my best hope of salvation, while simultaneously in the midst of an apocalyptic plague, well… as Chris Rock would say, I don’t approve, but (to some degree) I understand…

The devotees are marking an auspicious bathing day on Monday at the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar city of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand…

The Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years and the venue is chosen from amongst four cities, including Allahabad, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain.

Haridwar’s turn to host the gathering came amid a sharp rise in the number of coronavirus infections, with India consistently reporting more than 100,000 cases daily in the past few weeks…

Health experts had appealed for the Kumbh Mela festival to be cancelled, but the government went ahead saying safety rules would be followed…

Monday – Somvati Amavasya – marks the biggest bathing day during the two-month-long festival, with hundreds of thousands of devotees expected to take a dip.

The government had earlier said that only people with Covid negative reports would be allowed at the festival and strict measures like social distancing would be followed.

But a number of people, including top saints, have already tested positive…

    Private hospitals in Malaysia are invited to register as Covid-19 vaccination providers effective today, the Ministry of Health has announced. They will participate in phases two and three of the national vaccination programme, which cover people over sixty and high-risk individuals, and then the general adult population. Meanwhile the Ministry has also announced that 2,304 general practitioners in private practice (i.e. primary care physicians) have also signed up as vaccination providers under its PICK programme.

    As of today, the Ministry reports, phase one of the national vacciation programme has administered 583,903 first doses and 395,891 second doses to frontline workers.

    In other, more sobering news, the national R0 number has risen above 1.06, with Terengganu’s R0 at a worrying 1.56. The Ministry reports that Sarawak, with its high daily new case numbers, is another state it is concerned about.

    As an old Jesus freak who’s totally lost patience with these people, I’d have been a bit more acerbic if I’d been in his position. To use the expression that white evangelicals popularized last year, I too “walk in faith, not in fear” but that doesn’t mean I expect the Lord to keep me safe if I decide to play in traffic.

    On 4/11 China reported 2 new domestic confirmed & 0 new domestic asymptomatic cases. There are currently 86 domestic confirmed & 25 domestic asymptomatic cases in Yunnan Province.

    • Ruili in Dehong Prefecture reported 2 new domestic confirmed cases. There are currently 86 domestic confirmed & 24 domestic asymptomatic cases there. 3 communities remain at High Risk. 3 residential compounds, 1 factory & 2 villages remain at Medium Risk.
    • Gengma County in Lincang City did not report any new positive cases. There is 1 domestic asymptomatic case there.

    Imported Cases

    On 4/11 China reported 14 new imported confirmed cases, 12 imported asymptomatic cases, 1 imported suspect case:

    • Xiamen in Fujian Province – 4 confirmed cases, 3 Chinese nationals returning from the Philippines & 1 from Romania; 2 asymptomatic cases, both Chinese nationals returning from the Philippines
    • Shanghai Municipality – 3 confirmed cases, 1 Chinese national each returning from Qatar (via Colombo), Serbia (via Germany) & Canada; 1 suspect case, no information released
    • Guangzhou in Guangdong Province – 3 confirmed cases, 1 Chinese national returning from Bangladesh, Thailand & Madagascar (via Paris CdG); 4 asymptomatic cases, 1 Chinese national each returning from Japan, the Philippines, Iran & the Ukraine (via Amsterdam Schiphol)
    • Shenzhen in Guangdong Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from Ethiopia
    • Xi’an in Shaanxi Province – 2 confirmed cases (both previously asymptomatic); 2 asymptomatic cases, both Chinese nationals returning from Pakistan, off a flight diverted from Beijing; in the evening of 4/11 the city also reported 5 asymptomatic cases found on 4/10, 4 Chinese nationals returning from the UAE & 1 from Pakistan, all off flights diverted from Beijing
    • Beijing Municipality – 1 confirmed case, an Indian national coming from Hong Kong
    • Qingdao in Shandong Province – 1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from Italy; the case had landed at Nanjing in Jiangsu Province on 3/26, went through the 14 days of centralized quarantine and had tested negative on RT-PCR and antibodies multiple times, upon release from quarantine on 4/9 the case took high speed rail to Qingdao and reentered centralized quarantine, the case tested positive on 4/11 and was diagnosed as a moderate case; not sure whether the case was infected in Italy, on the flight, or during quarantine
    • Chengdu in Sichuan Province – 2 asymptomatic cases, both Chinese nationals returning from Egypt
    • Nanjing in Jiangsu Province – 1 asymptomatic case, no information released

     

    Overall in China, 7 confirmed cases recovered, 5 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation & 2 was reclassified as confirmed cases, and 546 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 295 active confirmed cases in the country (209 imported), 3 in critical/serious condition (all imported), 301 asymptomatic cases (276 imported), 1 suspect cases (imported). 7,619 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.

    As of 4/11, 167.343M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 2.872M doses in the past 24 hrs.

    On 4/12, Hong Kong reported 13 new cases, 11 imported & 2 domestic (both of whom have sources of infection identified).

    Because of new research, my DIL’s obstetrician recommended she get the vaccine.   The office had a small supply of Moderna and she was able to get vaccinated there.    She was so excited not only for her own health, but for the health of my  grandson.

    Four days ago the number spiked at 2570. I don’t want to undermine good news, but checking the daily totals is not the best way to look at covid data. Most of the day-to-day variation is reporting logistics.
    The 7-day average has stalled at just under 1000/day for the last 2+ weeks. That’s about what it was just after the second peak.​

    Malaysia’s Director-General of Heath Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reports 1,317 new Covid-19 cases today in his media statement, for a cumulative reported total of 362,173 cases. He also reports four new deaths today, for a cumulative total of 1,333 deaths — 0.37% of the cumulative reported total, 0.38% of resolved cases.

    There are currently 15,835 active and contagious cases; 188 are in ICU, 84 of them intubated. Meanwhile, 1,052 patients recovered and were discharged, for a cumulative total of 345,005 patients recovered – 95.26% of the cumulative reported total.

    Eight new clusters were reported today: Leepang, Indera Mahkota Tiga, and Kampung Paya Pulai in Pahang; Industri Balakong Lapan in Selangor; Jalan Perjiranan Empat in Johor; Jalan Stadium Empat in Kelantan; Ara Murni in Terengganu; Persiaran Salahuddin in Putrajaya; Kabu in Kedah; and Jalan Canning Estate in Perak.

    Kabu, Kampung Paya Pulai, and Jalan Canning Estate are community clusters. The rest are workplace clusters.

    1,305 new cases today are local infections. Sarawak returns to the top of the list, reporting 351 cases: 21 in existing clusters, 235 close-contact screenings, and 95 other screenings. Selangor reports 303 cases: 39 in older clusters, 30 in Industri Balakong Lapan cluster, 175 close-contact screenings, and 59 other screenings.

    Penang reports 112 cases: 63 in existing clusters, 28 close-contact screenings, and 21 other screenings. Sabah reports 109 cases: 35 in existing clusters, 48 close-contact screenings, and 26 other screenings. Kuala Lumpur reports 105 local cases: 63 close-contact screenings, and 42 other screenings.

    Negeri Sembilan reports 63 cases: eight close-contact screenings, and 55 other screenings. Johor reports 60 local cases: 13 in older clusters, 14 in Jalan Perjiranan Empat cluster, 19 close-contact screenings, and 14 other screenings. Kelantan reports 58 cases: 11 in older clusters, 10 in Jalan Stadium Empat cluster, 28 close-contact screenings, and nine other screenings. Kedah reports 47 cases: 11 in older clusters, 10 in Jalan Stadium Empat cluster, 28 close-contact screenings, and nine other screenings.     Melaka reports 11 cases: one in an existing cluster, nine close-contact screenings, and one other screening. Putrajaya reports nine cases: seven in Persiaran Salahuddin cluster, one close-contact screening, and one other screening. And Perlis reports two cases, both found in other screening.
    Labuan reports no new cases today.

    12 new cases today are imported: 11 in Kuala Lumpur, and one in Johor.

    The deaths reported today are a 45-year-old man in Selangor with no co-morbidities listed; a 62-year-old woman in Kuala Lumpur with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease; a 74-year-old man in Kuala Lumpur with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, dyslipidaemia, and chronic kidney disease; and a 58-year-old man in Sabah, DOA with hypertension, heart disease, and dyslipidaemia.

I know, the epidemiologist is right that we need at least a percentage of Trump voters to get vaccinated (I think more are than want to admit it), but it makes me so fucking angry that we have to keep humoring these people, babying them by asking pretty please get the vaccine so everyone doesn’t die! Why do we have to care about the feelings of the “fuck your feelings” crowd? So, so badly I want to say to them “fuck your feelings, I don’t care how you feel, get the vaccine for the good of you and other Americans you dipwads. I thought you believed in “America First”?  I know, not productive, but it’s what I want to say.

    I think Dr. Frieden is both right and wrong. He’s right that we need a more targeted effort toward the remaining members of the highest-risk groups – at this point I think it’s mostly people in poorly-served communities, people who have difficulty leaving their houses, and resisters. I think he’s wrong, though, about exclusively targeting those people. I understand what he’s saying about how targeted vaccinations can save a lot of lives, but while he’s searching for that person we can also be vaccinating millions of people who are doing front-facing work with the public and thus slowing the spread. We’re in a race; the faster we can get people vaccinated, the faster we can get back to a better life, a more normal way of life, and that’s how you motivate people to get vaccinated.

    Even though the state of MO isn’t doing that well with their vaccinations so far, I feel like my area is exceeding expectations. They didn’t vaccinate the 10,000 people they wanted to last Thursday and Friday at the local state university, but they did break the MO single day record by giving 4,385 doses on Friday. They gave a two-day total of 6,131 doses of the J & J vaccine. I hope a lot of the students took advantage of the event to get vaccinated before they go home.

    Found out on Saturday that Indiana was giving doses to 16+ regardless of where you live.

    On Sunday, took my 17 y.o. daughter to Gary to a FEMA vax site.

    my husband still hasn’t had his first shot – he decided to.wait until the end of the week to give him a few non-work day buffers in case of symptoms.

    Today Illinois officially opened up to all adults (except Chicago where I live). I just checked for appointments locally and there is nothing for the next five days.

     

    Glad I didn’t wait for my daughter!

     

    we have a 14 y.o. and my husband and I agreed that we have been getting a little lax. we can’t ease off on precautions now that we are in the home stretch.  waiting eagerly for Pfizer  to be approved for 12-15.

    Wales – 53 (down 77).

    Deaths – There were 7 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. For the first time in a while we are seeing an INCREASE in the rolling 7-day average, in this case by 2.4%. New deaths by nation, England – 3, Northern Ireland – 1, Wales – 3 and none in Scotland.

    Testing – Not updated at weekends.

    Hospitalisations – Not updated at weekends.

    Vaccinations – As of 10 April, a total of 32,121,353 people had received the 1st dose of a vaccine and 7,466,540 people had received both doses. This means that 61% of all adults in the UK have received 1 shot and 14.2% are fully vaccinated.

    General – Today sees the latest relaxation in lockdown in England with the re-opening of “non-essential” shops and hairdressers and with pubs and restaurants allowed to open for outside service only. The barber opposite my house is doing bumper business (although it is a bit strange seeing people going in and out after getting used to it being closed for so long).

    Successful mass vaccination should change that dynamic. Every vaccine in mass use around the world, even the Sinovac one that has attached so much bad press, are highly effective against severe disease and death. The mRNA ones being used in the US offer pretty good protection 2 weeks after just the 1st dose.

    @Soprano2: My Trumpist in-laws have several reasons why they aren’t planning to get the vaccine. COVID is not real, it’s just the Liberals making people afraid. The vaccine rewrites your DNA. Anyone taking the vaccines is a Guinea Pig for an untested medicine which is going to have bad side effects. The Socialists (or Chinese Communists, changes daily) want you to take the vaccine because reasons. The idea of vaccine passports is just big government (meanwhile they think any dog owner who doesn’t vaccinate their dogs is a bad person who shouldn’t be allowed to have dogs.)

    Bottom line, I think they believe their Lord and Savior TFG will protect them.

    I got my 2nd shot this morning. I checked our local dashboard, and 24.87% of our city is fully vaccinated after the mass event last week. By the middle of the week (maybe even by today, a bunch of my co-workers are getting their 2nd shot this week) that number should be over 25%, which was their goal to move to the “yellow” portion of their mitigation plan. I hope we don’t see much of a spike when they ease the capacity restrictions. At least they have a plan rather than saying, as a few towns around here already have, “The mask mandate comes off on ‘date x’ because we’re sure enough people will have been vaccinated by then”.
