Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

This really is a full service blog.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I can’t offhand remember a Mike Pence news conference, not that it’s something I would have sought out. It’s also probably something TFG wouldn’t have approved of, since someone else would be getting attention.

Mentioned this in a dead thread below: I managed to schedule my first vaccine today, and it’s for tomorrow morning. I kind of wonder if someone got scared off by the J&J announcement and gave up their slot.

I’d like to think that, if I were a fascist, I’d be embarrassed by the quality of the political discourse on the American right.

I guess I’ll never know though.

These people are fucking idiots. It’s equally pathetic, hilarious, and annoying to watch them try to tar Biden and Harris—and fail miserably each time. Just a bunch of goons.

Re: open thread. Today was day two of coaching middle school track. Our admins are AWOL so the woman I’m coaching with and I are making it up as we go along.

Bumpiness of this first week aside, the kids—ages 11-13—are great. There’s nothing like spending the afternoon running around with a bunch of kids, and having little interactions with ‘em. I’d take any of my kids on their worst day than a Republican on their best day. They make me slightly leas grumpy.

I guess the assumption is that she should be giving a press conference every day because the ‘border crisis’ is so ‘bad’? Clearly, she’s just AWOL.

As opposed to “fixing the shit Trump did and things are steadily improving”, which doesn’t require daily updates.

@Spanky: Logically he must have been at press conferences, because he was on the vaccine task force, and I assume he would have said something — but I’m drawing a blank.  I remember a few other things from those conferences. Did he not say anything, or did the news not cover it?

Though it would be funny if the WH began releasing that statement every day, as a parody of the ones about TFG “working very hard all day, attending many meetings and making many phone calls”

I read that Post story the other day and made the mistake of continuing on to the comments section. Normally the Post commentariat is relatively sane, but boy howdy the haters and trolls were out in force. Basic theme: ‘How dare she have a hobby while the border remains unfixed!’. Clearly she should have purchased a golf course and spent every weekend there instead.

Couple of recent items which caught the eye.

    1) The good.

The Biden administration’s fiscal 2022 defense budget request would eliminate the so-called Overseas Contingency Operations account, a seemingly bottomless box of money that had become emblematic of Washington’s fiscal flimflammery.

The president intends to discontinue requests for OCO “as a separate funding category, instead funding direct war costs and enduring operations in the DOD base budget, a significant budgetary reform,” according to a fact sheet submitted to appropriators Friday by Shalanda Young, the acting director of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget.

This would mark the end of an era. Over the past two decades, off-budget war accounts, whether called “supplementals” or the OCO account, had morphed from a temporary way to budget for fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq into what some called a slush fund for hundreds of billions of dollars — spending that, by law, was not hemmed in by the budget caps that circumscribed most other federal programs. Source

    2) The bad and the ugly.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn has a new idea for protecting the still-unfinished border wall championed by former President Donald Trump: Turn any part of the wall into a national monument.

Cawthorn, a first-term Republican who represents far-western North Carolina, even wants to honor Trump with the bill. He’s a calling it “Donument.” Cawthorn introduced the legislation last week. Source

I did a quick search and it appears that Mike Pence did appear at press conferences, mostly in his largely ceremonial role with the Coronavirus Task Force, and so far as I can tell, never by himself.

However, that search also turned up the news that “super lawyer Lin Wood” released the transcript of an interview with a big-time whistleblower, “with many hair-raising allegations about former Vice President Mike Pence, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and former Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein.”  Since I was afraid I couldn’t handle the truth, I did not click the link.

@VeniceRiley: While I am barred from cheering for Citeh by the blood oath I swore when they pried Raheem Sterling from LFC, it would be fun to see three English teams in the final four again like what was normal for the 2005 to 2010 time frame. A LFC Chelsea semi-final would be so Old School.

And a small part of me is fascinated with Citeh’s potential quad. They could add a Uefa super cup, a Community Shield, and a World Club  Cup and end up holding 7 trophies at the same time. We are going To end up with two Manchester Derbies before the season even starts in August.

I’m confused (and I know others above have made many of the same points):

    1. Do VPs usually go to, and stick to, the geographic locales of whatever fusterclucks they’ve been assigned?
    2. Is there video of a Mike Pence news conference about anything during trumpov’s 4 long years (other than him sitting at a cabinet meeting praising the orange menace)
    3. In this era of remote work…why would VP Harris need to go to and stay at the blessed border?
    4. Who made Fox News the timekeeper of VP Harris’ comings and goings?
    5. Why does Nikki Haley keep pretending she’s not the same/usual GQP creep with nothing to offer except soundbites and tweets, except in skirts?

    He denied it very strongly…

    Manu Raju@mkraju
Marco Rubio told me “I don’t know anything about the case” when asked if he stands by fellow FL Republican, Matt Gaetz “I’ve read about it, but I’ve read what people report, I’ve read what he’s denied. How can anybody opine on something they don’t know anything about firsthand?”

@dmsilev:Clearly she should have purchased a golf course and spent every weekend there instead.

Clearly you mean, “she should have straw-purchased a golf course with Russian money, and then played there 3x/week instead”

@Raoul Paste:{trumpov}’s determined to get his name on something    You’ll probably be able to see his tombstone from space

I just need it to be big enough that I can hit it with, um, liquid from a distance of about five feet.

@rikyrah: a whole lot of not lying here…

The Republican Party is the anti-government party. It has been for decades. During the Trump era, however, the party crossed a moral threshold many GOP voters would not. The Republicans became the party of treason. It literally acquitted the former president’s attempt to overthrow the United States government. At the same time, a vast majority of Americans, all living under the smog of the covid pandemic, realize government action was the only way out of the emergency. They couldn’t turn to the Republicans a) because the former president was most responsible for allowing the emergency to become the worst among rich counties and b) because they were the party of anti-government before they became the party of treason.

The Republicans turned their backs on the whole of the country when the whole of the country most needed the government to take action.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Marco Rubio: “How can anybody opine on something they don’t know anything about firsthand?”

Sen. Rubio’s tongue then leaped from his mouth and strangled him.

    @Just One More Canuck:

Maybe Chelsea will announce a run, just to make heads explode

As long as it’s not Liverpool; that would give Amir a sad.

    @NotMax:

Source

We could turn bad-and-ugly into a lesson: take down all but one piece of wall and call it the Donument to Stupidity.
