India to start vaccinating all adults over 18 amid surge in infections https://t.co/163H7MJcIC

All adults over the age of 18 will be offered a coronavirus jab starting from 1 May, the government said on Monday.
However, with vaccines in short supply in many states, it is unclear where the additional doses will come from.
The government said last week that it only had 27 million doses – or enough jabs for nine days at current rates of vaccination.
India is currently vaccinating health workers, front line workers and people over 45, but a number of states – including the worst-affected Maharashtra state – have reported insufficient supply. There have been reports of people being turned away from vaccination centres in many areas…
India has been reporting around 200,000 cases daily since 15 April – this is well past its peak last year, when it was averaging around 93,000 cases a day.
Deaths too have been rising. The government confirmed 1,619 deaths from the virus on Monday…

NewsInEnglish.no presents a very Norwegian version, “Hadeland fears ‘wild’ infection”:
The scenic rural community of Gran in Hadeland was under a new Corona alert this week after a local man in his 60s tested positive for Covid-19 after he’d died suddenly on Tuesday. Local officials believe the man, who was highly skeptical of the Corona crisis, had been ill for up to two weeks without seeing a doctor and may have infected others.
Newspapers Oppland Arbeiderblad and Avisa Oslo identified the man as Hans Kristian Gaarder, described as a “conspiracy theoretician” who as late as March 18 criticized on social media the “massive measures” aimed at preventing infection of “something that will be like a cold or light flu.” He wondered whether the measures really were a means of “camouflaging that the Corona virus does NOT spread from person to person.”…
“This was a sad message to receive and our thoughts go to his family,” wrote Dr Are Løken, chief medical officer for Gran. “It reminds us of how dangerous the virus can be and how important it is that we put up with the strict (anti-infection) measures for a while longer.”
Løken did not identify the man but the press release stressed that he had held two “arrangements” on his property in Gran on March 26 and March 27. “We don’t know how many or who took part in the arrangements, but ask all participants to take a Corona test as soon as possible,” read the release.
Løken later told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK), which also identified the man as Hans Kristian Gaarder, that the test results showing he was infected with Corona mean he may be a source of “wild infection” that makes infection tracking very demanding. He said he and his colleagues were struggling to work with a milieu in Corona denial, comprised of people who don’t think the pandemic is real. Løken doesn’t think the milieu is very large but its members can nonetheless come in contact with many others and thus pose a threat.
“Usually, when we’re in dialogue with people who are infected, we get lots of full and correct information (about their contacts),” Løken told NRK. “Here we’re meeting opposition. We’re not receiving the full information we need, and we’ve also been given incorrect information.”…
He has damaged his community. Properly, the shame would kill him, were he not already dead.

So Monday in the UK we had 2963 new cases. This is a decrease of 10% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 2550 (up 1055)
Northern Ireland – 79 (down 3)
Scotland – 232 (up 21).
Wales – 102 (up 8)
These and subsequent figures may still be affected by weekend reporting delays.
Deaths – There were 4 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 26.9% in the rolling 7-day average. Deaths by nation, England – 2 and Wales – 2. None in either Northern Ireland or Scotland.
Testing – There were 1,673,788 tests conducted on Sunday, 18 April. This is an increase of 14.7% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity estimated by labs as of the 18th was 650,138.
Hospitalisations – Not updated since last Thursday.
Vaccinations – As of Sunday, 18 April, a total of 32,932,448 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 10,152,039 had received both shots. This translates in percentage terms as 62.5% of all adults in the UK having received 1 shot and 19.3% being fully vaccinated.

Scotland — there were 178 new cases of COVID-19 reported yesterday and 2 deaths. The test positivity rate is 1.4%. The vaccination programme continues with over 40,000 people receiving their second dose yesterday but the numbers of first-dose vaccinations is quite a bit lower. This may be due to limited availability of vaccines in stock and the need to provide second vaccinations to the folks who get their first vaccination a couple of months ago. Anecdotally, I got my first vaccination in early February and I am still waiting for an appointment for my second vaccination which, under the twelve-week limit I should receive by May 7.
The First Minister announced that all of Scotland would be moving to level 3 restrictions next Monday (26th April) with a planned move to level 2 on May 17 if things continue to improve. There’s a hint that all restrictions may be lifted by the middle or late summer, subject to the numbers continuing to improve and no new outbreaks or other problems. Still no definite news about any kind of booster vaccination program in the autumn or winter of this year.
Vaccination hesitancy doesn’t seem to be a thing here in Scotland, conservatives and other political parties are all for getting vaccinated against this disease. They may complain about how it’s being handled by the Scottish government and Public Health Scotland (PHS) but there’s no “vaccination is bad for you” messaging by them or attempts to downplay how serious the disease is. We do have a few random numpties out protesting, waving bits of brown cardboard with incoherent conspiracy theories written with a half-used-up Sharpie but they’re rare and they don’t hold elected office, generally.

That article about coronavirus rescues was fascinating. Back in the cold war days we used to constantly fret about a “decapitation strike” on the US government wiping out the central organizing force of the Presidency, leaving the federal bureaucracies acting independently and at cross-purposes. Looks like the Trump administration was a sort of natural experiment of what that would look like.

Unfortunately, over the last week, the rates of new vaccinations and of new people getting vaccinated have gone down. I’m guessing this is the result of concerns raised by the J&J pause, as well as cancellation of J&J appointments. On the other hand, as of yesterday, all people 16 and over are eligible and hopefully there’s some pent-up demand among younger people that will boost the numbers.
